Welfare participation and welfare dependence among the unemployed   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
We regard individual unemployment duration as an important determinant of individuals welfare dependence. Welfare receipt is modelled for a unique data set of 4,655 Finnish unemployed individuals. A two-stage binomial hurdle model is applied, and estimations are made by both ML and GMM. Disregarding the full interrelation between unemployment and welfare clearly underestimates the importance of the former. Unemployment has a clear impact on both the probability of welfare participation and on welfare dependence among recipients. Using a finite mixture model we find that there is a small minority of unemployed welfare recipients who are locked-in in welfare dependence.All correspondence to Maria Melkersson. Adequate and reliable methods for evaluation of clients with work disabilities are crucial for both the individuals who are assessed and for society as a whole. Sound and precise work assessments are needed to guide clients to suitable interventions using a minimum of rehabilitation resources. Occupational therapy literature contains evidence that work function assessments are complex and that there is confusion over work assessment concepts. Therefore, further development and evaluation of adequate concepts and theoretical models within the area of work assessment is needed. This article proposes a conceptual framework for different dimensions of work functioning and points out important factors for work assessment. The concepts proposed and defined in the article are: work functioning, work participation, work performance, and individual capacity.  相似文献

Proportional intensity models are widely used for describing the relationship between the intensity of a counting process and associated covariates. A basic assumption in this model is the proportionality, that each covariate has a multiplicative effect on the intensity. We present and study tests for this assumption based on a score process which is equivalent to cumulative sums of the Schoenfeld residuals. Tests within principle power against any type of departure from proportionality can be constructed based on this score process. Among the tests studied, in particular an Anderson-Darling type test turns out to be very useful by having good power properties against general alternatives. A simulation study comparing various tests for proportionality indicates that this test seems to be a good choice for an omnibus test for proportionality.  相似文献

This article examines the place of romance in the lives of single mothers. Drawing on interviews with single mothers in a rural state, I challenge prevailing views of relationships between single mothers and romantic partners that highlight the issues of exchange and that emphasize the possibility that women will be exploited by men. I argue instead that although single mothers generally adhere to the norm of reciprocity in their other relationships, in romantic relationships they accept substantial imbalances. In explaining this surprising finding, I consider the significance of romance within the context of the daily lives of single mothers and I explore how romance can become a strategic explanation for imbalance.  相似文献

Over the next 20 years, Hong Kong will face a rapidly aging population as the number of older adults aged 65 or above increases to approximately 1.4 million by 2021, that is, 17% of the total population. In 2001, there were 1.2 million adults aged 45-59. To assess the differences between these middle-aged adults and the current cohort of older adults, we identified the challenges that Hong Kong society will face in meeting the financial needs of older adults in the coming two decades. In this paper, we examine the retirement economic status of three groups of older adults: those who are financially independent, those who are financially supported by their adult children or children-in-law, and those who are receiving welfare assistance. We describe the current situations of these groups, prevailing social policy, future trends, and recommend policies for tackling problem areas.  相似文献

This research explores the antecedents and consequences of market information processing during the development process of new high-tech products. To this end, we develop and test a conceptual model for market information processing in three generic stages of the new product development (NPD) process (predevelopment, development and commercialization). In addition, we explore the relationships between market information processing, its antecedents, and product advantage and success. We test our model with responses from 166 NPD-managers in Dutch high-tech firms. The findings show that the market information processing variables are related differentially to new product outcomes, even when controlling for product advantage and product newness to the market. In addition, we found that companies can enhance market information processing for new high-tech products by influencing project priority and flexibility to new products, and by reducing interdepartmental conflict.  相似文献

Managed care is cultivating a variety of new work careers within the medical profession, and it is worth asking whether they will function as long- or shorter-term career options for the individuals who participate in them. This paper uses the specific case of hospitalist physicians to explore how the surrounding social and economic work contexts contribute to two individual-level outcomes that inform the issue of career longevity: the concepts of burnout and intent to stay in the career. The findings of a national survey of hospitalists reveal that job burnout and intent to remain in the career are more meaningfully associated with favorable social relations involving colleagues, co-workers, and patients than with negative experiences related to the economically induced pressures of the job, such as reduced autonomy and the use of financial incentives. In addition, career longevity is enhanced by the extent to which individual physicians pursue intrinsic and extrinsic rewards through their choices to become hospitalists. These findings demonstrate that sociologists should pay greater attention to the career trajectories of contemporary doctors in order to understand larger scale professional stratification within medicine. They also offer empirical support for redirecting our focus towards the relational dynamics that shape these trajectories.  相似文献
