Patient violence. Report of 200 incidents

Studies of assaultive behavior in hospital settings are increasing. Results are often contradictory. These variances are dependent upon the type of hospital, the specific setting, and the disciplines involved in the reporting process. Open recognition that violent incidents occur, and the substitution of fact finding for finger pointing, are the first steps toward prevention and management.     

Perceived leadership stability and the structure of urban agenda-setting networks

A number of recent studies have addressed the informal social structure surrounding urban decision making, showing its implications for collective political action. This paper extends these analyses by asking a prior question: what factors affect the structure of political networks? Specifically, the paper develops a model suggesting how one such factor, perceptions of political leadership and the expectations of political conflict they may engender, affect the structure of urban agenda-setting networks. Data collected from six cities show perceptions of leadership stability to be strongly correlated with four structural characteristics of these networks.     

Illegitimate pregnancies,abortion, and the relationship with the pre-oedipal mother

There exists a correlation between disturbances in the early mother-daughter relationship and the adolescent's gravitating toward illegitimate pregnancy and abortion. Out-of-wedlock pregnancies may be an expression of opposing urges to separate from the mother while longing to remain very close. Abortion, the ultimate rejection of the fetus, may express hatred of the mother as well as its corollary hatred for a self that has remained merged with a hated or ambivalently regarded mother. In the clinical material it became clear that the most meaningful steps within the treatment were catalyzed by reenactments of the mother-daughter relationship and that interpretation of transference and countertransference tended to be the crucial element in the work. Movement toward more self-acceptance was paralleled by a more benign stance toward the therapist, the mother, and the daughter.This article was completed in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a certificate in the Post-Master's Program in Advanced Clinical Social Work at Hunter College School of Social Work. Acting out in children: A review of the literature

This paper presents a review of the literature on the meaning, etiology and categorization of acting out symtomatology in children. It is apparent that there is no one cause nor is there one well defined disorder.DSM-III categories as they relate to behavior disorders are discussed and the problems of diagnosis are addressed. Appropriate treatment goals and interventions cannot be developed unless more global aspects of a child's functioning and the environment in which he lives are assessed.     

The cyclical pattern of child physical abuse from a psychoanalytic self-psychology perspective

Child physical abuse is a problem that moves from generation to generation. As yet, there has been no adequate theoretical conceptualization for this phenomenon. This article examines the multigenerational dimension of child abuse from the developmental perspective of psychoanalytic self-psychology. The research data available on the role of empathy in child abuse is integrated into the discussion and applied to the empirical basis of the self-psychology paradigm. Finally, the use of empathy in this theoretical model is applied to a discussion of intervention strategies in a number of treatment modalities.
