Can Cultural Values Help Explain the Positive Aspects of Caregiving Among Chinese American Caregivers?

This study used an adaptation of the caregivers' stress model to examine the positive aspects of caregiving with 113 Chinese American family caregivers who provided care to their elderly relatives. The hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that combination of caregiver background characteristics, stressors, and cultural values had direct effects on positive aspects of caregiving. Unlike previous studies in which cultural values were not measured, this study found that cultural values helped explain positive aspects of caregiving. Specifically, cultural values, caregiver's health, and caregiver's age predicted positive aspects of caregiving. Service implications are discussed based upon the findings.     

Asian Tsunami and Social Work Practice: Recovery and Rebuilding

This study investigated the attitudes towards lesbians and gay men among the student population of the Social Work Department of the Technological Educational Institute of Crete, Greece, using Herek's ATLG scale. None of the respondents were found to hold completely non-heterosexist or completely heterosexist attitudes; still, 10% had scores in the negative range. On the whole, students held rather positive attitudes towards lesbians and gay men; however, their attitudes were clearly less favourable towards gay men. Having ‘gay-friendly’ parents and having lesbian/gay friends were associated with lower levels of prejudice; religiosity was also found to be a major factor influencing students' attitudes. No statistically significant results were found on the bases of gender and age. Students' attitudes did not seem to be moderated by social work education; this is of concern as the extent of curriculum content on issues related to lesbians/gay men in the particular social work department is very limited. Implications for curriculum design and teaching methods are discussed.

“社会主义核心价值观”的本义是指中国人民践行的、具有中国特色社会主义性质的、处于核心地位的价值观.这一价值观的提炼和培育应当注重特质性,兼顾普适性;注重根基性,兼顾引领性;注重现时性,兼顾久远性;注重民族性,兼顾世界性.“共富”“互助”“自强”应列为社会主义核心价值观的基本范畴.

民国上海居士佛教作为一种民间宗教慈善组织,它是构成民国上海城市慈善网络的重要一环.在近代社会转型的背景下,民国上海居士佛教慈善在其形式上已经突破了传统局限,并制定了较为细致的操作程序与财务监督机制,形成了自身的基本运作模式.就其特点而言,民国上海居士佛教慈善不仅体现了佛教信仰的内在需求,也呈现出近代中国佛教由内向外的社会联接冲动.就其意义而言,它不仅在社会学层面上表征了中国佛教的近代转型特征,也对当代的都市居士佛教慈善具有一定的启迪.     

被分割的纽带:现代西方工人阶级认同感的缺失

工人运动是西方社会运动的主要组成部分,马克思主义也十分重视对于工人运动的研究。然而,各资本主义国家工人运动的发展并没有按照学者们的设想而进行。第二次工业革命以后,资本主义国家工人运动发生了许多重要变化,其中最为明显的是工人运动逐渐由激进转为保守。促使工人运动发生如此转化的重要原因在于工人阶级认同感遭到社会各种机制的分割,这些社会机制包括民族主义、部门分割及生产过程中的"制造同意"、国家对社会运动的调控等。汤普森、安德森、曼和布洛维等学者分别从不同的角度对此问题进行过阐述,这些阐述既是对马克思主义的补充,也是在新的社会条件下对工人运动的重新认识,是对马克思主义的再发展。

Formal volunteering as a protector of health in the context of social losses

This study aims to examine the effect of the death of a family member or friend on psychological well-being, specifically the moderating effects of first-time volunteering and social network. With the sample of 354 volunteers from the Experience Corps® (EC) programs, Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) estimated the differences in psychological well-being. Among volunteers who had experienced the death of a family member or friend, new volunteers showed significant improvement in positive affect compared to experienced volunteers. EC members gained additional social contacts through volunteering. Formal volunteering has a salutatory effect on older adults' health after the loss of family members.
