Moral Emotions and Social Activism: The Case of Animal Rights

Why do some people and not others become involved in social movements? We examined the relationships between a moral emotion—disgust—and animal activism, attitudes toward animal welfare, and consumption of meat. Participants were recruited through two social networking websites and included animal activists, promoters of animal use, and participants not involved in animal-related causes. They took an online survey which included measures of sensitivity to visceral disgust, attitudes toward animal welfare, and frequency of meat eating. Animal activists were more sensitive to visceral disgust than were promoters of animal use or nonaligned participants. Disgust sensitivity was positively correlated with attitudes toward animal welfare but not with meat consumption. The relationship between animal activism and vegetarianism was complex; nearly half of animal activists ate meat, and half of the vegetarians did not consider themselves to be animal activists. We argue that conflicts over the moral status of animals reflect fundamental differences in moral intuitions.     

Temperament and the Development of Conscience: The Moderating Role of Effortful Control

In this longitudinal study we examined whether two components of effortful control, behavioral control, and executive function moderated the relation between temperament and conscience development. Temperament was assessed when participants were two years of age, and three temperament groups were formed: inhibited, exuberant, and low reactive. At 4.5 years of age, children's behavioral control and executive function were assessed. Moral behavior, emotionality during an empathy film, and false-belief understanding were measured at 5.5 years of age as components of conscience. Results indicate that inhibited children may benefit most from higher levels of effortful control. Inhibited children with higher levels of behavioral control performed better on false-belief understanding tasks whereas inhibited children who scored higher on executive function tests reported less emotional response to the evocative film. Finally, as a group, inhibited children exhibited more moral behavior than exuberant and low reactive children.

Applying Social Learning Theory of Career Decision Making to Gay,Lesbian, Bisexual,Transgender, and Questioning Young Adults

Incorporating J. D. Krumboltz's (1979) social learning theory of career decision making, the author explores career development issues for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (GLBTQ) adolescents and young adults. Unique challenges for the GLBTQ population are discussed, specific recommendations for effective career counseling with this population are outlined, and suggestions for future research are presented.

顺应论观照下的英语带施事被动结构的语篇—语用功能

语篇中的被动结构本质上是顺应的一种方式.文章运用Verschueren的顺应论对带施事的被动结构这一顺应方式的语篇-语用功能进行研究,认为,带施事的被动结构有主位突显与末尾焦点的共现、顺应末端重心原则、顺应语用对比意图和顺应视角一致性等功能,这些功能共同为带施事的被动结构的存在及运用提供理论依据.

先秦至西汉时期,"说"是一个被广泛使用、内涵复杂的概念,它的愉悦义与言说义两个义项影响了人们对<汉志>"小说家"的理解.<汉志>"诸子略"中的诸予十家作品,唯有小说作品多以"说"命名.<汉志>以"小说家"来概括这部分作品,采用的主要是"说"的"学说义".对书籍文体特征的认识,使<汉志>中"小说家"的"说"又成为了文体概念.小说也逐渐从诸子小说向小说文体发展.
