ASPECTS OF CORRELATION IN BIVARIATE POISSON DISTRIBUTIONS AND PROCESSES

This paper reviews some interesting but scattered results that are known about correlation in bivariate Poisson distributions and processes and presents some new results. A particular concern in both contexts is with results and examples relating to negative correlation.     

First passage game

Appealing to the theory of stochastic games, a two-person, zero-sum first passage game, which may be viewed as a generalization of the first passage decision problem, is developed. In the first passage game, the players have stationary optional strategies and the values are unique and these can be computed using an algorithm for terminating stochastic games. It is also shown that the solution of a recurrence game is closely related to that of the first passage game. Finally, it is shown that a finite step stochastic game with nonstationary transition probabilities and payoffs can be converted to a first passage game whose solution yields a solution of the original finite step game. The first passage game so obtained has stationary transition probabilities and payoffs. Because of its special structure, the solution method reduces to a dynamic programming recursion in the context of games.     

Survival Analysis For A Sequenced Clinical Trial With Covariates

In this paper we discuss the survival analysis for a clinical trial in which treatment categories and general prognostic data are realised at different stages during a patient's survival time. In the light of possible strategies for the parsimonious modelling of such data, a corresponding sequence of illustrative analyses is presented. Detailed results are given for a weighted least squares analysis and these generally agree with those obtained by maximum likelihood.     

The older lesbian

This research uncovers a pattern of support and the existence of a relationship network that runs strongly counter to the stereotyped view that lesbians in later life find themselves friendless and without support. The hypothesis that the older lesbian has developed friendship networks to replace missing or weak kin ties is substantiated. The findings are based on 20 in-depth, structured interviews with lesbians whose ages range from 50 to 73.     

Familial spinal shape

It has been proposed that there is a familial relationship in the shape of the spine. This paper describes a pilot study investigating familial shape in the sagittal plane (side view), using three data sets of normal Leeds schoolchildren. The study is exploratory in nature, because only small samples were available. Data acquisition was by means of the Quantec system, which obtains surface shape measurements and extracts a line representing the spinal curve. The coordinates of the spine line in the sagittal plane are then used to investigate familial correlations of spinal shape. The spine lines first undergo some preprocessing, including Procrustes rotations to remove location, rotation and size effects. Smoothed principal component analysis of the curves provides suitable shape variables, and familial correlations between curves are then investigated. The covariates of sex and height are also investigated in the analysis. It does appear that there could be some evidence for familial correlations in sagittal spinal shape, although a further large-scale study is required. Finally, a discussion of the approach and other alternatives is considered.     

Treatment of psychogenic seizures in adolescents

This article will review the problem of psychogenic seizures in adolescents and the impact of family therapy and individual therapy on treatment. Why particular individuals are prone to psychogenic seizures, the relationship between psychogenic seizures and family dynamics, and unresolved individual issues will be covered. The article will address a selected case, with a specific clinical paradigm for treatment.
