On the equivalence of two approaches to simplicity in the analysis of block designs and some related results

Two seemingly different approaches to simplicity in the analysis of connected block designs, and their relationship to the concepts of balance are discussed.     

Optimum mixture designs in a restricted region

In a mixture experiment, the response depends on the proportions of the mixing components. Canonical models of different degrees and also other models have been suggested to represent the mean response. Optimum designs for estimation of the parameters of the models have been investigated by different authors. In most cases, the optimum design includes the vertex points of the simplex as support points of the design, which are not mixture combinations in the true non-trivial sense. In this paper, optimum designs have been obtained when the experimental region is an ellipsoidal subspace of the entire factor space which does not cover the vertex points of the simplex.     

Design and implementation of an integrated production planning system for a pharmaceutical manufacturing concern in India

SmithKline Beecham (SBPI) is a major player in the Indian pharmaceutical industry. Though relatively small in terms of turnover, it has performed Pharmaceuticals (India) exceptionally well in terms ofprofitability and growth rate. The firm has substantial cash reserves. However, the firm operates in 'mass production' mode at present, with the established finished goods inventory norms being in the range of 1 to 1.5 months. Competitive pressure on the firm is now forcing it to move towards world class manufacturing and the application of concepts from MRP II, JIT and OPT is under consideration. This paper describes the considerations that went into the justification, design and implementation of an integrated production planning and control system in this situaion.     

The health consequences of trafficking in women in Mexico: findings from Monterrey city

There has been little research on the health consequences of trafficking in women in Mexico and this study examines the effects of trafficking in women. Twenty internally trafficked women were interviewed in Monterrey city, Mexico, during the years 2007 and 2008. Although the study found that trafficking of women in Mexico results from multi-causal factors, we found that in general trafficked women suffer a wide range of physical and sexual violence. This has direct consequences on their physical and mental health and in particular their sexual health.     

On the total sojourn time of particles in semi-markov compartmental system with branching particles

We consider a semi-Markov compartroental system with branching particles, Me study the total sojourn time of all the particles and obtain the asymptotic behaviour of its mean. We also discuss some special systems.     

Inference on unknown parameters of a Burr distribution under hybrid censoring

Based on hybrid censored data, the problem of making statistical inference on parameters of a two parameter Burr Type XII distribution is taken up. The maximum likelihood estimates are developed for the unknown parameters using the EM algorithm. Fisher information matrix is obtained by applying missing value principle and is further utilized for constructing the approximate confidence intervals. Some Bayes estimates and the corresponding highest posterior density intervals of the unknown parameters are also obtained. Lindley’s approximation method and a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique have been applied to evaluate these Bayes estimates. Further, MCMC samples are utilized to construct the highest posterior density intervals as well. A numerical comparison is made between proposed estimates in terms of their mean square error values and comments are given. Finally, two data sets are analyzed using proposed methods.     

A Generalized Class of Ratio Type Exponential Estimators of Population Mean Under Linear Transformation of Auxiliary Variable

Recently, Shabbir and Gupta [Shabbir, J. and Gupta, S. (2011). On estimating finite population mean in simple and stratified random sampling. Communications in Statistics-Theory and Methods, 40(2), 199–212] defined a class of ratio type exponential estimators of population mean under a very specific linear transformation of auxiliary variable. In the present article, we propose a generalized class of ratio type exponential estimators of population mean in simple random sampling under a very general linear transformation of auxiliary variable. Shabbir and Gupta's [Shabbir, J. and Gupta, S. (2011). On estimating finite population mean in simple and stratified random sampling. Communications in Statistics-Theory and Methods, 40(2), 199–212] class of estimators is a particular member of our proposed class of estimators. It has been found that the optimal estimator of our proposed generalized class of estimators is always more efficient than almost all the existing estimators defined under the same situations. Moreover, in comparison to a few existing estimators, our proposed estimator becomes more efficient under some simple conditions. Theoretical results obtained in the article have been verified by taking a numerical illustration. Finally, a simulation study has been carried out to see the relative performance of our proposed estimator with respect to some existing estimators which are less efficient under certain conditions as compared to the proposed estimator.     

A procedure for testing suspected observations

The problem of multiple outliers detection in one-parameter exponential family is considered. The outlier detection procedure involves two estimates of scale parameter which are obtained by maximizing two log-likelihoods; the complete data log-likelihood and its conditional expectation given suspected observations. The procedure is also applied to the exponential and normal samples.
