While many cases in which conflict over the evolution of social behavior exists even between closely related individuals (e.g., parent-offspring conflict) have been pointed out, little attention has been paid on the problem of where such conflict should lead. A general theory of conflict resolution, however, has recently been developed. The key idea of the theory is the incorporation of conflict costs in the inclusive fitness evaluation. The theory shows that if both sides engaged in the conflict can potentially control the other at a cost, the coevolutionary game of escalating the fight with increased conflict costs always leads either side to give in to the other, resolving the conflict. Here we examine the logical basis of the theory in terms of a simplest example, donor-recipient conflict over the evolution of altruism, and to show its different types of application we review two more specific examples: reproductive-worker conflict over true (sterile) worker evolution in termites and insider-outsider conflict over group size determination. The latter exemplifies the resolution of conflict over the value of a variable (group size in this case) rather than a behavior, suggesting extended applicability of the basic theory.  相似文献

Temporal changes in the population size of a phytophagous lady-beetle were analyzed to identify mechanisms affecting lady-beetle population dynamics at different spatial scales. The study area (15 ha) included 18 habitat patches. The major host plants were potato for first generation larvae and eggplant for second generation larvae. The habitat patches were classified into three groups according to the major host plants in each patch: P-E patches (both host plants available), P patches (potato only), and E patches (eggplant only). The winter disappearance of adults in the whole study area, and larval mortality in E patches were apparently the most important factors disturbing the overall population density. Density-dependent movement of females appeared to have the greatest stabilizing effect on the yearly fluctuation of population density. Rate of increase of female adults from the first to the second generation,R, was generally higher on eggplants in E patches than in P-E patches because the adult density of the first generation was much higher in P-E patches. The yearly fluctuation of adult density in each generation tended to be less in patches with all habitat components necessary for the full life cycle (P-E patches). However, such patches were not favorable for first generation females, as indicated by the lower rate of increase from the first to the second generation. The density and stability of lady-beetle populations is discussed in relation to habitat structure.  相似文献

The conventional criteria for predictive model selection do not indicate the absolute goodness of models. For example, the quantity of Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) has meanings only when we compare AIC of different models for a given amount of data. Thus, the existing criteria do not tell us whether the quantity and quality of data is satisfactory, and hence we cannot judge whether we should collect more data to further improve the model or not. To solve such a practical problem, we propose a criterion RD that lies between 0 and 1. RD is an asymptotic estimate of the proportion of improvement in the predictive ability under a given error structure, where the predictive ability is defined by the expected logarithmic probability by which the next dataset (2nd dataset) occurs under a model constructed from the current dataset (1st dataset). That is, the predictive ability is defined by the expected logarithmic probability of the 2nd dataset evaluated at the model constructed from the 1st dataset. Appropriate choice of error structures is important in the calculation of RD. We illustrate examples of calculations of RD by using a small dataset about the moth abundance.  相似文献

Using Japanese prefecture-level panel data, this paper examines how the crime rate is affected by formal and informal deterrents as reflected by police and social capital, respectively. Both, however, suffer from the endogeneity problem and therefore the estimation results are biased when regression analysis is conducted. Hence, the fixed effects 2SLS method is employed to control for the endogeneity bias as well as for unobservable fixed effects. As well, the relationship between inequality and crime is examined. The main findings are: (1) police and social capital reduce the crime rate and their effects increase when the endogeneity bias is controlled for through fixed effects 2SLS estimation. (2) The effects of social capital, which is smaller than that of police, is however is reinforced by police through the complementary relationship existing between them.  相似文献

Summary When there exist two species such that one is a parasite on fruit and the other exploits the parasitized fruits, they must compete for a limited resource with each other. The relation betweenDacus cucurbitae andAtherigona orientalis is an example of such a situation. We raise a question whether the population of a parasite on fruit can be stabilized by the existence of the cleptoparasite of the parasite on fruit. The changes in their population densities are represented as a differential equation with time delayed parameters, which is deduced from the context of life histories of the two species. An index representing degree of overlapping of generations (g) is defined as an average oviposition period devided by the average preoviposition period, and the value is assumed to be the same in the two species. The stability of the system is classified by three parameters: the reproductive rate of the parasite on fruits (R), the survival probability of it through competition against the cleptoparasite (p), and the generation overlapping index (g). For small values ofg, e.g. less than some 0.5, the stability is determined mainly by a product ofRp: the values larger than 1 result in no equilibrium and infinite increase of both species, the values near 0 lead to large amplitude oscillations, and the intermediate values make stable equilibria or regular small oscillations. Asg takes the larger values, the stability region in the space (p, R) occupies the larger area. The model presented here is well adjusted to the fluctuating pattern of the population ofD. cucurbitae on Okinawa Is., and would also be applied to analysis of both hyperparasitisms and inquilin. Intraspecific regulatory processes keep the population ofNephotettix cincticeps stable at a low density in southern Japan. In northern Japan, however, the yearly population density of the insect fluctuates violently, and large outbreaks occasionally take place. To clarify the difference in the population dynamics between the two regions, we analyzed light-trap and sweep-net sampling records from prefectural and national agricultural experimental stations. The survival rate of the overwintering population decreased with increases in the period of continuous snow cover (PCSC) in the north, and initial population densities in the years of long PCSC were too low for populations to reach equilibrium density by the end of the active breeding season. This made yearly population fluctuations in the north much larger than in the south. The equilibrium density in the north was higher than in the south. The higher equilibrium density presumably permits the higher population density and larger yearly population fluctuations in the north. A major factor responsible for the difference in equilibrium densities between the two regions is the difference in heading dates of the host plant (rice). Qualitative differences among rice plant varieties, and among biotypes ofN. cincticeps, may also be important.  相似文献

Summary The effect of spatial distribution on the reproductive rate of a population was examined by applying an approximate equation to several data based on the entomological literature. This study suggests that aggregation generally reduces the equilibrium level of the population density if the population density is not very high.  相似文献

Stabilization effects of spatial aggregation of vectors were examined in insect-borne plant disease systems by constructing a model that describes the yearly dynamics of rice stripe virus disease transmitted by the small brown planthopperLaodelphax striatellus (Fallén). Two transmission paths between vectors were considered: vertical transmission from parents through eggs, and horizontal transmission from infected plants by acquisition feeding. In this model, a paddy field was divided into quadrats and horizontal transmission was assumed to occur within each quadrat. A negative binomial distribution was used to describe the frequency distribution of vectors per quadrat. The parameters of the model were estimated using field data collected in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. The model showed that (1) the disease cannot invade into an epidemiological system if the mean crowding of vectors is less than a critical value, (2) the proportion of infected vectors is maintained at about 30% irrespective of the vector density if vectors are highly aggregated, and (3) the proportion of infected plants is maintained at a low level irrespective of the vector density if vectors are highly aggregated. It was also shown that these stabilization effects of aggregation in this epidemiological system come from a mechanism that is common to other systems such as single-species systems and competition systems.  相似文献

This study follows the history of public relations in Japan. Meiji restoration in 1867 marked the beginning of modernization of Japan, but as democratization did not accompany modernization, the country was void of autonomous public. The birth of public relations department, though not in the mainland Japan, can be traced back to the 1920s at South Manchurian Railroad in Japan-controlled-Manchuria. After the World War II, the U.S. led Allied Occupation Army urged national and local government to adopt public relations. Shortly afterwards, ad agencies learned from the U.S. the use of public relations, but as marketing gained ground, public relations came to be used as marketing support tool. Criticism of environmental pollution in the 1970s, overseas expansion of businesses in the 1980s, collapse of bubble economy and business crises in the 1990s and onward, each drove public relations in Japan to increase its importance and expand its field.  相似文献

The population density of herbivores depends on the spatial scale as well as the temporal scale. In a small-scale, short-term experiment, the number of individuals entering from the surrounding area will be most influential in determining the herbivore density. In large-scale, long-term experiments, however, the density of herbivores will rather be influenced by the survival rate of individuals inside the field because most of the herbivorous population derives from the parents that developed inside the field. If we want to predict the large-scale long-term density of herbivores, therefore, emphasis should be placed on the estimation of survival rate. To elucidate the effects of plant density on the large-scale long-term abundance of cabbage pests, we examined the survival rates of three lepidopterous pests, the small white butterfly Pieris rapae crucivora Boisduval (Pieridae), the beet semi-looper Autographa nigrisigna (Walker) (Noctuidae), and the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus) (Yponomeutidae) under two levels of plant spacing (sparse plot, 2 m × 2 m interval; dense plot, 0.5 m × 0.5 m interval). The experiment with four blocks was repeated in two seasons. The number of eggs per plant was larger in the sparse plots than in the dense plots for all species. The survival rate of eggs and larvae, on the contrary, was lower in the sparse plots than in the dense plots. The lower survival rate of eggs in the sparse plots was mainly caused by the density dependency, while the lower survival rate of larvae in the sparse plots was mainly caused by the direct effects of plant density. It was thus suggested that the density of herbivores may become lower in the sparsely planted field in the long run because of the higher mortality of larvae.
