A control in stratified sampling

A new expression of the variance of the units from a stratified finite population wit L strata, is obtained in funcions of the means L–1 strata, and in conseqeuence we obtained formulae which relates the mean of a stratum in a statistical study with the population mean and the ones of the remaining strate. As an application, we obtained a useful checking of the estimation consistency by stratified sampling in any precies survey     

Determinants of Vaginal Cleansing,Application, and Insertion in Tete Province,Mozambique, and Products Used

Objective: In this article, we review insertion, application, and cleansing as they include the use of products other than water and have a number of harmful effects. Method: In 2007, a household survey of 919 women carried out in Tete Province, Mozambique, examined 8 vaginal practices. Results: Overall, 10% of the sexually active women reported regularly using these 3 vaginal practices concurrently. Of the women who practiced insertion, 65% used natural substances. A wider variety of products was used for applying substances on the external genitalia and for cleansing purposes. Conclusions: These findings have important implications for future HIV prevention, including in the use of microbicides.     

Properties of systems with two exchangeable Pareto components

The life lengths of the units in a system can be modelled by a bivariate distribution. In this paper, we suppose that the joint distribution of the units is a symmetric bivariate Pareto (Lomax) distribution. For this model, we obtain basic reliability properties for series and parallel systems. J. M. Acquired immunity: immunosenescence and physical activity

Several lines of evidence indicate that infectious diseases, cancer, and autoimmune disorders occur more frequently in elderly people, thus suggesting that altered function of immune organs and cells, such as thymus and T and B lymphocytes are of primary importance in the pathogenesis of these diseases. Furthermore, old subjects are less responsive to vaccine than younger because of immune changes. The most common changes accompanying the adaptive immune system include decrement of T and B cells proliferation, repertoire degeneracy, increase of the memory cell type, decreased numbers of naive cells, and shift from T helper₁ (Th1) to T helper₂ (Th2) response. Regular exercise in the elderly may improve the alterations in acquired immunity which follow the physiological process of aging, allowing a major resistance against external pathogens and a better quality of life.     

A Bayesian model for multinomial sampling with misclassified data

In this paper the issue of making inferences with misclassified data from a noisy multinomial process is addressed. A Bayesian model for making inferences about the proportions and the noise parameters is developed. The problem is reformulated in a more tractable form by introducing auxiliary or latent random vectors. This allows for an easy-to-implement Gibbs sampling-based algorithm to generate samples from the distributions of interest. An illustrative example related to elections is also presented.     

Characterization of discrete populations through conditional expectations of order statistics

In this paper we give some properties of the expected values of any order statistic when one of its adjacent order statistics is known (order mean function) from a sequence of sizen of independent and identically distributed random variables with discrete distribution. Furthermore, we obtain the explicit expressions of the distribution from these order mean functions, and finally, we show the necessary and sufficient conditions for any real function to be an order mean function. We also add some examples of characterization of discrete distributions from the order mean functions. A step-by-step algorithm for combining diagnostic tests

Combining data of several tests or markers for the classification of patients according to their health status for assigning better treatments is a major issue in the study of diseases such as cancer. In order to tackle this problem, several approaches have been proposed in the literature. In this paper, a step-by-step algorithm for estimating the parameters of a linear classifier that combines several measures is considered. The optimization criterion is to maximize the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. The algorithm is applied to different simulated data sets and its performance is evaluated. Finally, the method is illustrated with a prostate cancer staging database.
