Growth Effects of Remittances in Bangladesh: Is there a U‐shaped Relationship?

This article shows that the effect of remittances on economic growth involves a U‐shaped pattern, which is negative initially but later becomes positive. The analysis differs significantly from earlier studies in that it examines important methodological issues on the specification and estimation of the long‐run growth effects of remittances by estimating their impact on total factor productivity (TFP) rather than on the growth rate of GDP, using time series data from Bangladesh. The use of single‐equation cointegration methods shows that remittances’ effect on long‐run growth in Bangladesh is negative and falling until the remittances‐to‐GDP ratio is roughly eight per cent. The benefits of remittances receipts outweigh their costs and their net effects start to become positive when the ratio exceeds 14 per cent.     

An Assessment of the Impact of Local Government Fragmentation in Ghana

In theory fragmentation: yields lower per capita service cost; decentralizes service delivery; promotes local democracy; and protects identity and community of interest. This article assessed whether prediction matched the Ghanaian fragmentation evidence. The paper’s findings are: poverty reduction is a more important performance indicator than the overemphasis on efficiency in public provision; procedures and opportunities for participation are inadequate and irregular; attention is on public expenditure assignments without due consideration for significant financial devolution; and the consequences of the politics of fragmentation have been ignored. The paper concludes that unless these minutiae are incorporated into fragmentation policy, achieving predicted outcomes will remain difficult.     

‘We are Hungry but We Won’t Eat the Food’: Schoolchildren’s ‘Thin’ agency and its impacts on the implementation of Ghana’s School Feeding Programme

Following the introduction of the concept of agency by the New Sociology of Childhood, the concept has dominated discourses about children's everyday lives. Nevertheless, little is known about schoolchildren's agency in their daily interactions with the service providers of Ghana's school feeding programme. Through this qualitative study, the paper provides empirical evidence to show how children in restrictive contexts exercise ‘thin’ agency in their interactions with frontline service providers, leading to significant improvements in the quality of services delivered to them. Consequently, the article questions Michael Lipsky's assumption that clients have minimal effect on the services delivered to them.     

On the local linear estimate for functional regression: Uniform in bandwidth consistency

We consider the problem of local linear estimation of the regression function when the regressor is functional. The main result of this paper is to prove the strong convergence (with rates), uniformly in bandwidth parameters (UIB), of the considered estimator. The main interest of this result is the possibility to derive the asymptotic properties of our estimate even if the bandwidth parameter is a random variable.     

Muslimness as a political formation: an inquiry into Muslim presence

ABSTRACT

In this article, I undertake an investigation into the political significance of Islam and Muslimness. By doing so, I aim to underscore the primacy of Islam’s ontological (constitutive) nature and its irreducibility to any of its ontic (empirical) articulations. This project necessitates the recovery of the political as the moment of the formation of a collective order and community, irreducible to any of its material expressions (e.g. territorial or institutional unity). Thus, the article renounces the objectivity of the secular grammar which fixes, essentializes, and reduces Muslimness to being merely ‘religious’ as opposed to ‘political’. By contrast, it attempts to retrieve Islam’s basic condition of existence and hence emancipate it from the confines of the Western epistemic structure. Toward that end, the article presents a deconstructive analysis of Islam as an autonomous universe of meaning inaugurated by the event of the Divine Revelation to Prophet Muhammad as its originary moment. By doing so, I also emphasize the primacy of Muslimness as a political subjectivity, whose unity and autonomy is contingent upon the drawing of its most universal boundaries and the exclusion of an outside – a function, I argue, which had historically been fulfilled by the mechanism of the caliphate. Finally, the article discusses an alternative conceptualization of diaspora in order to come to grips with the political implications of Muslimness in the post-caliphate world order.     

Socio-Economic differences in mortality. A life course approach

Differential mortality in Norway has been studied on the basis of a sample of data derived from the linkage of the 1960, 1970, and 1980 censuses to vital registration records. Based on the hypothesis that the determinants of survival act in interaction, two models are proposed. The first is based on states defined at each observation period by the conjunction of attributes characterizing each individual. The second model considers the chronological order of the states. Logistic regression applied to the latter shows that the most favourable male and female life trajectories are those for married people belonging to rather privileged categories. There are however some differences by sex, as favourable trajectories concern both economically inactive females and employees.     

The Adaptive Gril Estimator with a Diverging Number of Parameters

We consider the problem of variables selection and estimation in linear regression model in situations where the number of parameters diverges with the sample size. We propose the adaptive Generalized Ridge-Lasso (\mboxAdaGril) which is an extension of the the adaptive Elastic Net. AdaGril incorporates information redundancy among correlated variables for model selection and estimation. It combines the strengths of the quadratic regularization and the adaptively weighted Lasso shrinkage. In this article, we highlight the grouped selection property for AdaCnet method (one type of AdaGril) in the equal correlation case. Under weak conditions, we establish the oracle property of AdaGril which ensures the optimal large performance when the dimension is high. Consequently, it achieves both goals of handling the problem of collinearity in high dimension and enjoys the oracle property. Moreover, we show that AdaGril estimator achieves a Sparsity Inequality, i.e., a bound in terms of the number of non-zero components of the “true” regression coefficient. This bound is obtained under a similar weak Restricted Eigenvalue (RE) condition used for Lasso. Simulations studies show that some particular cases of AdaGril outperform its competitors.     

Preliminary evaluation of the victorian zero blood alcohol content legislation at alcohol times: an australian case study in intervention analysis

The Victorian state government implemented the zero blood alcohol content legislation on 22 May 1984 to reduce the number of road accidents for novice drivers and riders. Under this legislation no learner, first year probationary, disqualified or unlicensed driver or rider can drive or ride with any alcohol in his/her blood. The serious casualty accidents during the alcohol times were used in this study as surrogates for alcohol-involved accidents. A preliminary evaluation of the legislation was made only for car drivers involved in serious casualty accidents at alcohol times, using the intervention time series analysis. The effect was measured over the eighteen month post-legislation period: July 1984 to December 1985.The analysis indicated that there was no effect of the legislation for target group drivers at alcohol times as compared with the increase which would have resulted in the absence of the zero BAC legislation in Victoria. Power analysis of the study has been carried out and it showed that the power of the analysis was very poor.
