Tests of fit for the Gumbel distribution: EDF-based tests against entropy-based tests

In this article, we propose some tests of fit based on sample entropy for the composite Gumbel (Extreme Value) hypothesis. The proposed test statistics are constructed using different entropy estimates. Through a Monte Carlo simulation, critical values of the test statistics for various sample sizes are obtained. Since the tests based on the empirical distribution function (EDF) are commonly used in practice, the power values of the entropy-based tests with those of the EDF tests are compared against various alternatives and different sample sizes. Perceived Cultural Distance in Healthcare in Immigrant Intercultural Medical Encounters

This article responds to the paucity of empirical research on the impact of patient-provider ethno-cultural distance and providers' cultural competence on the quality of healthcare service in migrant intercultural medical encounters in Australia. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 447 patients, consisting of 195 Caucasian and 252 non-Caucasian patients from six outpatient clinics in New South Wales, Australia. Structural equation modelling was used for data analysis. The findings demonstrated that cultural distance is an influential factor in perceived quality of outpatient care. Caucasian and non-Caucasian patients' perception of cultural distance between their physicians and themselves affected their service quality ratings of their physicians' professionalism, empathy and expertise. This is the first study on healthcare service quality in outpatient clinics in Australia for Caucasian and non-Caucasian patients. Policy implications suggest intervention strategies and the need for cultural competence education in medical and health curricula in medical schools and clinical practices.     

An extensive power evaluation of some tests for the inverse Gaussian distribution

Many applications of the Inverse Gaussian distribution, including numerous reliability and life testing results are presented in statistical literature. The paper studies the problem of using entropy tests to examine the goodness of fit of an Inverse Gaussian distribution with unknown parameters. Some entropy tests based on different entropy estimates are proposed. Critical values of the test statistics for various sample sizes are obtained by Monte Carlo simulations. Type I error of the tests is investigated and then power values of the tests are compared with the competing tests against various alternatives. Finally, recommendations for the application of the tests in practice are presented.     

Efficiency of ranked set sampling in tests for normality

In this article, we consider the ranked set sampling (RSS) and investigate seven tests for normality under RSS. Each test is described and then power of each test is obtained by Monte Carlo simulations under various alternatives. Finally, the powers of the tests based on RSS are compared with the powers of the tests based on the simple random sampling and the results are discussed.     

Testing the validity of the logistic model based on the empirical distribution function

The logistic distribution is one of the fundamental distribution and is widely used for describing model growth curves in survival analysis and biological studies. Applications of this distribution are presented in statistical literature. In this article, goodness of fit tests for the logistic distribution based on the empirical distribution function (EDF) are considered. In order to compute the test statistics, because the MLEs cannot be obtained explicitly, we use the approximate maximum likelihood estimates (AMLEs) suggested by Balakrishnan and Cohen (1990 Balakrishnan, N., Cohen, A. C. (1990). Order Statistics and Inference: Estimation Methods. Boston: Academic Press. [Google Scholar]), which are simple explicit estimators. Power comparisons of the considered tests are carried out via simulations. Finally, two illustrative examples are presented and analyzed.     

The odd log-logistic generalized half-normal lifetime distribution: Properties and applications

Cooray and Ananda (2008 Cooray, K., Ananda, M.M.A. (2008). A Generalization of the half-normal distribution with applications to lifetime data. Commun. Stat. - Theory Methods 37:1323–1337.[Taylor &; Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]) pioneered a lifetime model commonly used in reliability studies. Based on this distribution, we propose a new model called the odd log-logistic generalized half-normal distribution for describing fatigue lifetime data. Various of its structural properties are derived. We discuss the method of maximum likelihood to fit the model parameters. For different parameter settings and sample sizes, some simulation studies compare the performance of the new lifetime model. It can be very useful, and its superiority is illustrated by means of a real dataset.     

Tests of goodness of fit based on Phi-divergence

In this paper, we introduce a general goodness of fit test based on Phi-divergence. Consistency of the proposed test is established. We then study some special cases of tests for normal, exponential, uniform and Laplace distributions. Through Monte Carlo simulations, the power values of the proposed tests are compared with some known competing tests under various alternatives. Finally, some numerical examples are presented to illustrate the proposed procedure.
