Culture and community: drink and soft drugs in Hebridean youth culture

This paper discusses the way in which ideas about deviance and thus moral judgements are ultimately grounded within native culture. Through focusing on underage drinking and soft drug use in the Western Isles of Scotland an analysis is presented which seeks to unfold the relationship between tradition, morality and belonging.     

Growth curve models with restrictions on random parameters

In the classical growth curve setting, individuals are repeatedly measured over time on an outcome of interest. The objective of statistical modeling is to fit some function of time, generally a polynomial, that describes the outcome's behavior. The polynomial coefficients are assumed drawn from a multivariate normal mixing distribution. At times, it may be known that each individual's polynomial must follow a restricted form. When the polynomial coefficients lie close to the restriction boundary, or the outcome is subject to substantial measurement error, or relatively few observations per individual are recorded, it can be advantageous to incorporate known restrictions. This paper introduces a class of models where the polynomial coefficients are assumed drawn from a restricted multivariate normal whose support is confined to a theoretically permissible region. The model can handle a variety of restrictions on the space of random parameters. The restricted support ensures that each individual's random polynomial is theoretically plausible. Estimation, posterior calculations, and comparisons with the unrestricted approach are provided.     

Seeing (in)security,gender and silencing: posters in and about the British women’s suffrage movement

Feminist Security Studies focuses on expanding the referent object to individuals and non-state collectives, looking beyond the military sector to include questions of identity, and uncovering (in)security in unexpected places. An important part of this debate concerns silence, particularly how certain individuals are silenced and how this might be challenged through images. This article looks at the ways images can be used to make gender-specific security problems visible. It holds that text, images and practices interact to construct (in)security and outlines a tripartite text-image-practice model for analyzing these interactions. Through a case study of the British women’s suffrage movement it illustrates the potential of the text-image-practice model. The suffrage movement leveraged visuals, militancy and practices like hunger-striking to resist attempted silencing by the government across textual, verbal and visual planes. Using this case, it shows how posters were used to try to silence Suffragettes and how Suffragettes resisted silencing. Thus, it demonstrates that images are important sites of feminist resistance and security politics that can communicate a politics of the body. The article also offers an illustration of how historical cases of gender insecurity and resistance as well as their visualization can be brought into Feminist Security Studies.     

Evaluating the vocational rehabilitation program using longitudinal data. Evidence for a quasiexperimental research design.

The study presents benefit-cost ratios for 14 disability cohorts served by the Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Program. The earnings impacts are estimated in a quasiexperimental framework using an internal comparison group. The earnings data are from a unique national panel constructed by linking client data of the Rehabilitative Services Administration with earnings histories from the Social Security Administration. These earnings data accommodate a series of statistical tests that allow us to identify and control for the presence of selection bias when estimating treatment impacts. The results indicate that the VR program is cost-effective in general, although not universally so across specific disabilities.     

Making Employee Involvement Work: Cooperative Goals and Controversy to Reduce Costs

Organizations are involving employees to helpreduce costs to succeed in the intensely competitivemarketplace. However, many researchers have beenskeptical of the value of participation. This study uses Deutsch's theory of cooperation and competitionto examine the critical mediating variable of theinteraction as employees discuss how to reduce costs.Results of structural equation analyses on datacollected from interviews when employees participated inreducing costs indicate that cooperative goalscontributed to constructive discussion among employeesthat resulted in productive work and strongerrelationships, which in turn led employees to be committed toreducing costs. Competitive goals were negativelycorrelated with dynamics and outcomes. These resultssuggest that researchers and managers can agree that employee involvement has potential butemployees need cooperative goals and skills to discussissues open-mindedly and constructively to realize thesebenefits.
