RELIGION AND ROLE-IDENTITY:

This article presents a reconceptualization of individual religiosity based largely on a structural variant of symbolic interactionism and incorporating "religious salience," the importance of religion to an individual. The reconceptualization links the Glock-Stark multidimensional conceptualization of religiosity to the concept of role-identity as used by Stryker and other identity theorists. Two components of religiosity are proposed: (1) religious norm adherence , the quality of one's religious role performance (the focus of the Glock-Stark model); and (2) religious identity salience , the importance of a person's religious identity relative to that person's other identities. Procedures for measuring religious identity salience are considered. It is proposed, based on structural symbolic interactionism and cognitive behaviorism, that the degree and dimensional structure of norm adherence are strongly influenced by identity salience, contingent on costs and rewards associated with each normative behavior.     

Discerning the epidemiology of drug use among a sample of college students

Although estimates concerning the prevalence of various forms of substance abuse vary considerably, it is critical to note that even the more conservative estimates indicate a major public health problem. Furthermore, increased drug experimentation has been frequently associated with the college experience. Utilizing a slightly modified version of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Monitoring the Future Survey, the present study examined the epidemiology of self-reported drug taking behaviors (e.g., alcohol, marijuana, tranquilizers, stimulants, psychedelics, etc.) among a sample (n = 683) of students attending a major public university. Data analyses focused on the specific settings and social groupings in which drug use occurred as well as on the frequency and type(s) of drug taking behaviors. Based on the results yielded from a disjoint cluster analysis, four distinct groups of drug users were identified. These four groups then served as categories of the dependent variable in a discriminant function analysis. A general linear models procedure was employed to identify the more efficacious discriminating (i.e., independent) variables.     

Clinical observations on interferences of early father absence in the achievement of femininity

In clinical work, we have observed that the loss of the father through divorce has a significant effect on the young girl's developing sense of feminity. This paper briefly reviews the research findings from sex-role development theory and psychoanalytic theory, and presents clinical discussions of latency aged girls whose parents divorced during their daughter's early and oedipal years. The most common defensive or coping patterns seen in these child patients during latency are identified, with clinical material presented to illustrate both the existence of these patterns and implications for treatment.     

Deinstitutionalization: a public policy perspective

1. Deinstitutionalization was initiated in an era of social reform to protect the rights of the mentally ill; however, a strong research base was absent and led to major flaws in the policy's implementation. 2. The chronically mentally ill are frequently poor advocates for themselves and, without even the most simple needs fulfilled, end up homeless. 3. The homeless mentally ill require comprehensive support systems with assured continuity of care. An emerging concept to deal with this issue is that of case management. 4. The mental health professional can strive to influence future public policy as patient advocate and nonpartisan educator.     

Siblings of handicapped children

There is a strong suggestion that the siblings of handicapped children are at risk psychologically. Factors which contribute to this risk, aspects of the sibling relationship, and the siblings' issues, concerns and feelings are discussed so that professionals may have a framework within which to assess and evaluate these children's needs. Case examples are given.
