This paper presents a discussion of a 1989 United States federal appeals court ruling in the case of Doe v. First National Bank. The case is the first ruling on the federal appellate level involving a claim of Title VII employment discrimination based upon alleged employer knowledge of and animus towards an employee who had undergone an abortion. Doe raises the ethical questions of how a highly charged, national social issue can be reduced to interpersonal dealings between a supervisor and her subordinate in the workplace. The facts of the case are presented in a chronological manner, followed by a discussion of both the court rulings in the case and the utility of employing this case as an excellent tool in the teaching of business ethics and society. 相似文献

SUMMARY Invoking the predictive approach with a fixed population set-up, and employing initially the customary ratio and product estimators as potential predictors for the non-surveyed part of the population, we have generated sequences of ratio-based and product-based estimators. The proposed ratio-based and product-based estimators of order k are-under some practical conditions-found to be more efficient than the customary ratio and product estimators and the usual simple mean when k is chosen optimally. Under the optimal value of k, the kth-order ratio-based and product-based estimators are found to be as efficient as the linear regression estimator. We have used real population data to illustrate the efficacy of the proposed ratio-based and product-based estimators relative to the usual simple mean and the customary ratio and product estimators. 相似文献

Churches must realize that the management of their human resources is critical. The U.S. Catholic Church in recent years has been this problem take on even more significance with the apparent shortage of priests. This article considers this problem in light of a relatively new methodology, data envelopment analysis, which compares organizations to comparable best-practice units. The authors conclude that the Church would benefit from a better distribution of priests, both within and across dioceses. Analysis of 1995 Vremya (Russian national television) newscasts reveals few traces of the cold-war framework that dominated news media discourse throughout the world for almost four decades. The ability of Vremya to reconstruct its images of Russia and the United States reaffirms the contention of Edelman, Hall, and others that media news accounts evoke a spectacle that is an ideological product, not a set of facts. This article examines the advantages a single Democratic incumbentutilized to win reelection in 1984 despite an overwhelming victoryby Ronald Reagan at the top of the ticket in the congressionaldistrict. The incumbent won reelection because of two typesof ticket splitting: Republican-inclined voters who voted forRepublican candidates for president and U.S. Senate and splitto vote for the Democratic incumbent for Congress, and Democraticvoters who supported Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate andCongress but split to vote for Ronald Reagan for president.Ticket splitting was found to be associated with basic politicalorientation—weak Republican and independent voters splitin favor of the Democratic incumbent and were far less likelyto vote a straight ticket for either party. Support for theDemocratic incumbent was explained in nonideological terms andwas based upon high recognition and favorability, constituentservice, voting record, and personal familiarity. In clinical work, we have observed that the loss of the father through divorce has a significant effect on the young girl's developing sense of feminity. This paper briefly reviews the research findings from sex-role development theory and psychoanalytic theory, and presents clinical discussions of latency aged girls whose parents divorced during their daughter's early and oedipal years. The most common defensive or coping patterns seen in these child patients during latency are identified, with clinical material presented to illustrate both the existence of these patterns and implications for treatment. 相似文献

Dual commitment received wide attention during the 1950s and, after a waning of interest during the 1960s and 1970s, interest
has grown anew. In this study of dual commitment we used a model of investment and returns, applied referent theory to it,
and grounded the investigation in an industrial relations context at an airline carrier in order to examine both company and
union commitment. We found that wages were a positive income elastic good with respect to company commitment, but they were
a negative good with respect to union commitment. Information obtained from the firm or the union also resulted in divergencies
in the commitments. External labor market variables were unrelated to union commitment, but they were related to company commitment.
Finally, job influence and perceptions concerning a labor-management program were positive predictors of the two commitments;
as such, they have implications for the way firms and unions may want to build dual commitment.
