Black lives matter,capital, and ideology: Spiraling out from India

Piketty's propositions for arresting inequality are discussed through the lens of racism/casteism. We focus on the case of India's George Floyds—the persistence of caste and tribe oppression under economic growth in India—through the insights of our long‐term ethnographic research. We show that inequalities are intimately tied to dynamics of capitalist accumulation in which racial/ethnic/caste/tribe and gender difference is crucial. We argue for an analysis that truly integrates ideology and the dynamics of political economy. The wider implications, we argue are political; they lie in the question of what is to be done. Despite his ambitions to decenter economics, Piketty remains trapped in the logic of economics for what he proposes are essentially economic reforms within capitalism. Moreover, ideological change cannot be a matter of choice only, and cannot be challenged solely at the level of ideas around economic inequality. It will also have to be fought as a direct contest of oppressive ideologies such as racism, casteism, and patriarchy, leading to new counter‐hegemonic positions. We will argue that this takes us from a global history of ideology to a global anthropology of praxis. A first step is to genuinely center conversations with disciplines like anthropology, sociology, and subaltern history studying people and voices from below and from the margins, and the perspectives of scholars and activists from below and from the margins.     

Estimation of parameters in latin squares and graeco-latin squares with missing observations

We show that if in an additive model with p-2 MOLS if one omits up to p-1 observations from the same row, the same column or which correspond to the same letter in any of the squares all effects are estimable. On the other hand with only two missing observations not from the same row, the same column or corresponding to the same letter in any of the squares one degree of freedom is lost for each set of effects.     

On the optimality of the generalized room squares

Using a model given by Archbold and Johnson (1958) it is shown that the generalised Room square design is universally optimal for the estimation of the treatment effects. Further, if the variety-block design in a generalised Room square design is a BIBD, this design is also universally optimal for the estimation of the varietal effects.     

Analysis of binary data in the randomized complete block design

The technique proposed by Shah and Claypool (1984) is extended here for the randomized complete block design with one binary observation per cell. In addition, it provides an al- ternative derivation of the distribution of Cochran's Q sta- tistic which is straightforward.     

Benefits of adopting lean production on green performance of SMEs: a case study

Abstract

Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are widely recommended to strive, not only for their performance in operational side, but they need to integrate the environmental dimension. To do that, the literature widely indicates a positive impact of lean practices on green performance. However, very few studies have been carried out in SMEs context. In this view, this paper aims at providing through a practical case study of lean implementation in a real-life small manufacturing company, the information to confirm this synergy between lean and green performance. To achieve this aim, a proposed framework of lean and green integration has been implemented in a SME producing different types of pumps. The results achieved shows that there is a strong correlation between operational metrics improvement and green metrics improvement. Moreover, the benefits of lean practices such as 5S, Kanban, SMED, AM, cellular manufacturing and quality control on green performance are widely demonstrated. Future work could study other processes and explore other case-specific supporting tools and techniques.     

Simulation‐based sample‐sizing and power calculations in logistic regression with partial prior information

There have been many approximations developed for sample sizing of a logistic regression model with a single normally‐distributed stimulus. Despite this, it has been recognised that there is no consensus as to the best method. In pharmaceutical drug development, simulation provides a powerful tool to characterise the operating characteristics of complex adaptive designs and is an ideal method for determining the sample size for such a problem. In this paper, we address some issues associated with applying simulation to determine the sample size for a given power in the context of logistic regression. These include efficient methods for evaluating the convolution of a logistic function and a normal density and an efficient heuristic approach to searching for the appropriate sample size. On the unbiased estimation of fixed effects in a mixed model for growth curves

A mixed model for growth curves is introduced. A method of estimating the variance components is indicated. It is shown that the generalised least squares estimates of the fixed effects using estimates of variance components are unbiased and an expression is obtained for the increase in variance due to the substitution of the variances by their estimates. These results are directly applied to designs with two-way elimination of heterogeneity.
