Despite much research work on the effect of social capital or the production of social capital along ethno-linguistic or racial dimensions, there is hardly any study in this line along the much fragmented character of Indian ethnicity. This article studies the impact of ethnicity along caste and religious dimensions on the growth of social capital in the Indian context. A simple theoretical model indicates that individual ethnicity formed out of individuals' separate pairwise connections with people, who are either of the same ethnic dimension or of different ethnic dimensions, is the only factor affecting endogenous social capital growth. Empirical results suggest that all forms of individual social capital are higher for people who are of the same caste or religion. It also shows that individuals' ethnicity with the same caste or religion is the only factor influencing high performance on the productivity of aggregate social capital in general and nonstructural form of social capital in particular.  相似文献

A robust procedure is developed for testing the equality of means in the two sample normal model. This is based on the weighted likelihood estimators of Basu et al. (1993). When the normal model is true the tests proposed have the same asymptotic power as the two sample Student's t-statistic in the equal variance case. However, when the normality assumptions are only approximately true the proposed tests can be substantially more powerful than the classical tests. In a Monte Carlo study for the equal variance case under various outlier models the proposed test using Hellinger distance based weighted likelihood estimator compared favorably with the classical test as well as the robust test proposed by Tiku (1980).  相似文献

This paper introduces a nonparametric approach for testing the equality of two or more survival distributions based on right censored failure times with missing population marks for the censored observations. The standard log-rank test is not applicable here because the population membership information is not available for the right censored individuals. We propose to use the imputed population marks for the censored observations leading to fractional at-risk sets that can be used in a two sample censored data log-rank test. We demonstrate with a simple example that there could be a gain in power by imputing population marks (the proposed method) for the right censored individuals compared to simply removing them (which also would maintain the right size). Performance of the imputed log-rank tests obtained this way is studied through simulation. We also obtain an asymptotic linear representation of our test statistic. Our testing methodology is illustrated using a real data set.  相似文献

Starting with a decision theoretic formulation of simultaneous testing of null hypotheses against two-sided alternatives, a procedure controlling the Bayesian directional false discovery rate (BDFDR) is developed through controlling the posterior directional false discovery rate (PDFDR). This is an alternative to Lewis and Thayer [2004. A loss function related to the FDR for random effects multiple comparison. J. Statist. Plann. Inference 125, 49–58.] with a better control of the BDFDR. Moreover, it is optimum in the sense of being the non-randomized part of the procedure maximizing the posterior expectation of the directional per-comparison power rate given the data, while controlling the PDFDR. A corresponding empirical Bayes method is proposed in the context of one-way random effects model. Simulation study shows that the proposed Bayes and empirical Bayes methods perform much better from a Bayesian perspective than the procedures available in the literature.  相似文献

It is well-known in the literature on multicollinearity that one of the major consequences of multicollinearity on the ordinary least squares estimator is that the estimator produces large sampling variances, which in turn might inappropriately lead to exclusion of otherwise significant coefficients from the model. To circumvent this problem, two accepted estimation procedures which are often suggested are the restricted least squares method and the ridge regression method. While the former leads to a reduction in the sampling variance of the estimator, the later ensures a smaller mean square error value for the estimator. In this paper we have proposed a new estimator which is based on a criterion that combines the ideas underlying these two estimators. The standard properties of this new estimator have been studied in the paper. It has also been shown that this estimator is superior to both the restricted least squares as well as the ordinary ridge regression estimators by the criterion of mean sauare error of the estimator of the regression coefficients when the restrictions are indeed correct. The conditions for superiority of this estimator over the other two have also been derived for the situation when the restrictions are not correct.  相似文献

Count data analysis techniques have been developed in biological and medical research areas. In particular, zero-inflated versions of parametric count distributions have been used to model excessive zeros that are often present in these assays. The most common count distributions for analyzing such data are Poisson and negative binomial. However, a Poisson distribution can only handle equidispersed data and a negative binomial distribution can only cope with overdispersion. However, a Conway–Maxwell–Poisson (CMP) distribution [4] can handle a wide range of dispersion. We show, with an illustrative data set on next-generation sequencing of maize hybrids, that both underdispersion and overdispersion can be present in genomic data. Furthermore, the maize data set consists of clustered observations and, therefore, we develop inference procedures for a zero-inflated CMP regression that incorporates a cluster-specific random effect term. Unlike the Gaussian models, the underlying likelihood is computationally challenging. We use a numerical approximation via a Gaussian quadrature to circumvent this issue. A test for checking zero-inflation has also been developed in our setting. Finite sample properties of our estimators and test have been investigated by extensive simulations. Finally, the statistical methodology has been applied to analyze the maize data mentioned before.  相似文献

The Study on global AGEing and adult health (SAGE) aims at improving empirical understanding of the health and well-being of older adults in low- and middle-income countries. A total of 321 adults aged 50 years and older were interviewed in rural Pune district, India, in 2007. We used Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to examine the pathways through which social factors, functional disability, risk behaviours, and chronic disease experience influence self-rated health (SRH) and quality of life (QOL) amongst older adults in India. Both SRH and QOL worsened with increased age (indirect effect) and limitations in functional ability (direct effect). QOL, socio-economic status (SES), and social networking had no significant effect on SRH. Smoking was associated with the presence of at least one chronic illness, but this did not have a statistically significant effect on SRH. Higher social networking was seen amongst the better educated and those with regular income, which in turn positively affected the QOL rating. QOL had a direct, but statistically not significant, effect on SRH. In conclusion, the indirect effects of age on SRH mediated through functional ability, and the effects of SES on QOL mediated through social networking, provide new understanding of how age and socio-economic status affect SRH and QOL. By allowing for measurement errors, solving for collinearity in predictor variables by integrating them into measurement models, and specifying causal dependencies between the underlying latent constructs, SEM provides a strong link between theory and empirics.  相似文献

A supersaturated design is essentially a fractional factorial design whose number of experimental variables is greater than or equal to its number of experimental runs. Under the effect sparsity assumption, a supersaturated design can be very cost-effective. In this paper, our prime objective is to compare the existing two-level supersaturated designs for the noisy case through the probability of correct searching—a powerful criterion proposed by Shirakura et al. [1996. Searching probabilities for nonzeroeffects in search designs for the noisy case. Ann. Statist. 24, 2560–2568]. An algorithm is proposed to construct supersaturated designs with high probability of correct searching. Examples are given for illustration.  相似文献

A proper log-rank test for comparing two waiting (i.e. sojourn, gap) times under right censored data has been absent in the survival literature. The classical log-rank test provides a biased comparison even under independent right censoring since the censoring induced on the time since state entry depends on the entry time unless the hazards are semi-Markov. We develop test statistics for comparing K waiting time distributions from a multi-stage model in which censoring and waiting times may be dependent upon the transition history in the multi-stage model. To account for such dependent censoring, the proposed test statistics utilize an inverse probability of censoring weighted (IPCW) approach previously employed to define estimators for the cumulative hazard and survival function for waiting times in multi-stage models. We develop the test statistics as analogues to K-sample log-rank statistics for failure time data, and weak convergence to a Gaussian limit is demonstrated. A simulation study demonstrates the appropriateness of the test statistics in designs that violate typical independence assumptions for multi-stage models, under which naive test statistics for failure time data perform poorly, and illustrates the superiority of the test under proportional hazards alternatives to a Mann–Whitney type test. We apply the test statistics to an existing data set of burn patients.  相似文献

An usual approach for selection of the best subset AR model of known maximal order is to use an appropriate information criterion, like AIC or SIC with an exhaustive selection of regressors and to choose the subset model that produces the optimum (minimum) value of AIC or SIC. This method is computationally intensive. Proposed is a method based on the use of singular value decomposition and QR with column pivoting factorization for extracting a reduced subset from the exhaustive candidate set of regressors and to use AIC or SIC on the reduced subset to obtain the best subset AR model. The result is substantially reduced domain of exhaustive search for the computation of the best subset AR model.  相似文献
