Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Associations of Categories of Physical Activities with Dimensions of Subjective Well-Being in Taiwanese Older Adults

Physical activity takes place in different social contexts such as leisure, home, and work. However, the differential associations of these distinct categories of activity with aspects of well-being have rarely been investigated. This study was designed to estimate independent associations of (a) leisure-time, (b) domestic and (c) work-related physical activities with subjective well-being in older adults. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2009 with 2,295 community-dwelling older adults aged 65 or older in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Among them, 307 participants were selected for a 3-year follow-up study in 2012. The results based on cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses demonstrated that leisure-time physical activity, after multivariate adjustment, was positively associated with five dimensions of well-being, including ‘physical’, ‘psychological’, ‘independence’, ‘learning and growth’, and ‘social’ well-being. Household physical activity was positively associated only with ‘social’ well-being. Occupational physical activity was not related to any dimension of well-being. The study suggests that associations between physical activity and dimensions of subjective well-being during later life are dependent on the social context in which the activity takes place. This study indicates that physical activity taken as leisure has greatest potential to enhance the quality of life of older adults.

Assessing Participation and Effectiveness of the Peer-Led Approach in Youth Sexual Health Education: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis in More Developed Countries

Sexual health education for young people is crucial not only for development of norms but also for protection against vulnerabilities during this stage in life. Although several systematic reviews have examined the effectiveness of peer-led sex education, none have focused on the extent of peer participation. The purpose of this review was to evaluate peer-led sexual health education interventions in more developed countries (MDCs). Electronic and manual searches across five social science, education, and medical databases were conducted. Fifteen articles were selected in total. Most (10 of 15) studies gave low or no responsibility to peers. The majority of articles found improvements in sexual health knowledge (13 of 14) and attitudes (11 of 15) at postintervention stages. Two studies showed improved self-efficacy, and three showed behavioral changes. A preliminary synthesis of effectiveness and level of participation was done. Meta-analysis revealed a large effect on knowledge change (Hedges’ g = 0.84, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.43 to 1.25) and a medium effect on attitude change (Hedges’ g = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.19 to 0.80). Peer-led interventions could be a powerful tool. This review shows that this approach is effective in changing knowledge and attitudes but not behaviors. Further research and action are needed to understand optimal implementation.     

分位数单位根检验的拓展及其应用研究

在不同的分位下对时间序列数据是否含有结构性变化进行甄别,对于准确识别数据的动态变化及其分布特征具有重要的意义.本文首次在Koenker和Xiao(2004)研究的基础上提出傅立叶分位数单位根检验模型,并以此捕捉时间序列中存在的结构突变点,进而刻画数据在不同分位下的动态变化特征.本文通过构建傅立叶QKS统计量并采用蒙特卡罗方法对傅立叶分位数模型的临界值、样本容量和检验“势”进行模拟,发现含有傅立叶级数的分位数单位根检验对刻画“尖峰厚尾”特征数据的非线性偏离动态调节特征具有更高的检验“势”.最后,本文利用拓展后的模型对我国通货膨胀的持久性和失业的回滞效应进行再检验,结果发现我国通货膨胀具有平稳的特征,而失业率却包含单位根过程.本研究为分位数单位根检验的拓展及其应用提供了一定的启示.     

海洋公共管理学:缘起及其框架体系设想

以公共管理和公共事务的变化规律为研究对象的“公共管理学”是一门新兴的学科,其自身的构建面临着深化和发展的问题.在海洋管理的过程中,传统的海洋行政管理形态无论是在理论上还是在实践中都面临着公共性和工艺性严重不足的困境.将公共管理的相关理论成果应用到“海洋公共事务”的管理中去建构起一门“海洋公共管理学”无论在理论上还是实践上都具有必要性和可行性,并且海洋管理理论在自身的演变和传承过程中已经证明“公共性”的成长是一个必然的趋势,与公共管理学有内在的一致性和呼应性.作为公共管理学一脉新的分支学科,海洋公共管理学框架体系的建构及其丰富化尚需要学界共同的努力予以完成.     

Making Space for the Maid

Chinese television dramas over the past decades have seen the rise and decline of various narratives, but no other narratives speak to the emerging urban middle class's fear and anxiety more palpably than the stories of the maid. However, despite the growing popularity of the maid stories among urban viewers, most of these stories do not resonate with domestic workers themselves. How do we make sense of the growing popularity of the maid stories among urban viewers? And how do we account for the differentiated capacity to resonate and identify with the characters among viewers? These are important questions to consider if one is to understand the new cultural politics of power and social formations in post-Mao China. In this paper, I explore some of the crucial ways in which a controlling gaze is facilitated and naturalised by the visualisation of place and space in these dramas. Then, through both critical analyses and engaged ethnography, I demonstrate how two sets of controlling gaze—everyday and televisual—reinforce and justify each other. Finally, I advance the concept of “peripheral vision,” which, I show, denies the modernist “master” narrative of the city and, instead, empowers the subaltern figure with an epistemological position of “eye-witness” and anthropologist of the city.     

审议制在欧盟食品安全监管中的运用

对于国务院的改革，杜钢建教授提出了专家参与的审议制。但是从理论到实践，我们需要考虑的是对于这个由杜钢建教授提出的政府内部专家、专业领域专家和代表民意专家参与的审议制该如何制度化，又该如何在实践中运用。对此，欧盟食品安全监管中的专家参与给我们提供了可资借鉴的经验，尤其是在疯牛病危机中它所经历的教训和由此进行的改革更是值得我们参考。
