Contesting Benevolence: Market Orientations among Muslim Aid Providers in Egypt

This paper studies the pro-market and communitarian tendencies among Egypt’s khayr (benevolence) organizations based on interviews with and observation of managers, staff and volunteers. Can the conflicting market and community orientations in the field of benevolence be interpreted as an instance of the “double movement” of marketization and protection against the market? The analyses demonstrate a growing tendency of marketization and only weak tendencies to transform established communitarian ways of giving into more systematic ways of non-marketized giving. Due to an emergent state-business-civil society nexus, market-oriented voluntary associations hold the potential to undermine or absorb the actually more entrenched communitarian associations. Potentials for a double movement in the era of neoliberalism seem to be weaker than in the classical liberal era because of the deeper permeation of society by market ethics.     

Using Inverse Probability Weighting Estimators to Evaluate Various Propensity Scores When Treatment Switching Exists

In this paper, we conduct a Monte Carlo simulation study to evaluate three propensity score (PS) scenarios for estimating an average treatment effect (ATE) in observational studies when treatment switching exists: (a) ignoring treatment switching in subjects (UPS), (b) removing subjects with treatment switching (RPS), and (c) adjusting for treatment switching effect (APS) with two inverse probability weighting estimators, IPW1 and IPW2. We evaluate these six estimators in terms of bias, mean squared error (MSE), empirical standard error (ESE), and coverage probability (CP) under various simulation scenarios. Simulation results show that the IPW2 estimator with RPS has relatively good performance.     

Confidence intervals for the first crossing point of two hazard functions

The phenomenon of crossing hazard rates is common in clinical trials with time to event endpoints. Many methods have been proposed for testing equality of hazard functions against a crossing hazards alternative. However, there has been relatively few approaches available in the literature for point or interval estimation of the crossing time point. The problem of constructing confidence intervals for the first crossing time point of two hazard functions is considered in this paper. After reviewing a recent procedure based on Cox proportional hazard modeling with Box-Cox transformation of the time to event, a nonparametric procedure using the kernel smoothing estimate of the hazard ratio is proposed. The proposed procedure and the one based on Cox proportional hazard modeling with Box-Cox transformation of the time to event are both evaluated by Monte–Carlo simulations and applied to two clinical trial datasets.     

闽浙赣交界地:地理枢纽与畲民族共同体的建构——以历史地理为视角

因为政治、经济等动因,从元开始,特别是明代以后,畲民从闽粤赣交界地陆续迁往了闽浙赣交界地。在六个世纪的长时段(longue dur啨e)里,闽浙赣交界地逐渐成了畲民的大本营。以历史地理的视角,回顾畲民的迁徙史,分析畲的谱系学,进而探讨清政府的畲民政策和畲汉之间的相对和谐的互动如何造就了畲民的诸多文化要素,可以认为,必须通过空间、时间和权力(power)的互动,才能更好地理解畲民族共同体的建构。     

基于投影深度的判别分析

用稳健的投影深度中位数代替样本均值,改进了多元正态分布下Bayes线性和非线性判别法;把投影深度引入到最大深度判别理论中,得到了基于投影深度的最大深度判别法,这种判别法对判别函数的形式和总体的概率分布都没有任何要求.模拟研究表明:新的判别方法相对Bayes线性和非线性判别法有着更强的稳健性.
