The role of the brown-eared bulbulHypsypetes amaurotis as a seed dispersal agent

The role of the brown-eared bulbul,Hypsypetes amaurotis, as a dispersal agent for seeds of fruiting plants was studied by field observations for two years, in parallel with laboratory experiments on seed germination. Bulbuls consumed fruits of 53 species from 24 plant families. The fruits of these plants had similar color and size, and these characteristics were likely to enhance the feeding efficiency of the frugivore. Laboratory experiments on 20 food plant species demonstrated that: (1) no seeds were injured by passing through the bulbul's gut; (2) seeds that had passed through the bulbul's gut were still able to germinate and (3) fruit pulp reduced germination ability. When pulp was removed by passing through bulbul's gut, or by hand, germination was improved. An estimate of the home range of six bulbuls suggested that they may transport seeds for at least 300 m.     

A general lower bound of minimax risk for absolute-error loss

A general lower bound of minimax risk for absolute-error loss is given in terms of the Hellinger modulus of the estimation problem. The main results are applicable to various parametric, semi-parametric and nonparametric problems. Two examples of parametric estimation problems and two examples of density estimation problems are given. In all of these examples, the general lower bound achieves the convergence rates of minimax risk.     

Comparison of genomic sequences using the Hamming distance

The paper considers the problem of homogeneity among groups by comparison of genomic sequences. Some alternative procedures that attach less emphasis on the likelihood approach, and more on alternative measures that deal with similar homogeneity problems are considered here. On this approach, a one-sided hypothesis test is considered and the classical ANOVA decomposition can be directly adapted to sample measures based on the Hamming distance, without necessarily going through their second moments. Some results of U-statistics theory will be useful for the decomposition of the test statistic and to find its asymptotic distribution. An application of this test with real data is shown and the p-value of the test statistic is found via bootstrap resampling.

The robustness of bootstrap estimator of variance

Summary The bootstrap estimation for variance and its robustness in linear regression is considered. It is shown that the bootstrap approximation to the distribution of the estimator of the error variance, based on the least squared estimator, is robust over the Mallows neighborhood. Clustering objects on subsets of attributes (with discussion)

Summary.  A new procedure is proposed for clustering attribute value data. When used in conjunction with conventional distance-based clustering algorithms this procedure encourages those algorithms to detect automatically subgroups of objects that preferentially cluster on subsets of the attribute variables rather than on all of them simultaneously. The relevant attribute subsets for each individual cluster can be different and partially (or completely) overlap with those of other clusters. Enhancements for increasing sensitivity for detecting especially low cardinality groups clustering on a small subset of variables are discussed. Applications in different domains, including gene expression arrays, are presented.
