Successful Distance Learning Graduate Education in Human Services

SUMMARY

There is a critical learning process unique to graduate human services education. This process needs to be applied in the distance-learning environment. The planning and designing of course material, along with instructional strategies, need to incorporate the five phases of this learning process. Faculty who use this process to develop and deliver their distance programs will utilize the technology and educational environment of distance learning to the fullest. This paper gives readers the framework for designing human services courses so that graduate students benefit from the structure and presentation of course material in the unique environment of distance learning.     

Outcomes of ITV and Face-to-Face Instruction in a Social Work Research Methods Course

ABSTRACT

The heart of social work is relationship. IVT literature implies obstacles to interaction, but overlooks the centrality of relationship and challenges in distance education for teaching and modeling social work relationships. This article addresses how to ensure in the moderately-sized (40 students) IVT classroom that relationship remains integral to effective social work practice.

高校网络学堂建设与管理

为缓解学校硬件资源不够的压力,西南交通大学现代教育技术中心设计了“交大网络学堂”网站,提供的服务包括课件点播、教师磁盘分配、教案浏览及学习讨论等,网络学堂根据自身特点采取了管理员、教师及学生三方共同管理的方法加强资源管理、教师网络磁盘管理、学习讨论区的维护和管理及其他子学习模块的管理和系统本身的维护管理。     

AN ADAPTIVE TRIMMED LIKELIHOOD ALGORITHM FOR IDENTIFICATION OF MULTIVARIATE OUTLIERS

This article describes an algorithm for the identification of outliers in multivariate data based on the asymptotic theory for location estimation as described typically for the trimmed likelihood estimator and in particular for the minimum covariance determinant estimator. The strategy is to choose a subset of the data which minimizes an appropriate measure of the asymptotic variance of the multivariate location estimator. Observations not belonging to this subset are considered potential outliers which should be trimmed. For α less than about 0.5, the correct trimming proportion is taken to be that α > 0 for which the minimum of any minima of this measure of the asymptotic variance occurs. If no minima occur for an α > 0 then the data set will be considered outlier free.     

On a Posterior Predictive Density Sample Size Criterion

Abstract.  Let Ω be a space of densities with respect to some σ -finite measure μ and let Π be a prior distribution having support Ω with respect to some suitable topology. Conditional on f , let X ⁿ  = ( X ₁ ,…, X _n ) be an independent and identically distributed sample of size n from f . This paper introduces a Bayesian non-parametric criterion for sample size determination which is based on the integrated squared distance between posterior predictive densities. An expression for the sample size is obtained when the prior is a Dirichlet mixture of normal densities.     

ROBUST INFERENCE IN PARAMETRIC MODELS USING THE FAMILY OF GENERALIZED NEGATIVE EXPONENTIAL DISPARITIES

We examine robust estimators and tests using the family of generalized negative exponential disparities, which contains the Pearson's chi‐square and the ordinary negative exponential disparity as special cases. The influence function and α‐influence function of the proposed estimators are discussed and their breakdown points derived. Under the model, the estimators are asymptotically efficient, and are shown to have an asymptotic breakdown point of 50%. The proposed tests are shown to be equivalent to the likelihood ratio test under the null hypothesis, and their breakdown points are obtained. The competitive performance of the proposed estimators and tests relative to those based on the Hellinger distance is illustrated through examples and simulation results. Unlike the Hellinger distance, several members of this family of generalized negative exponential disparities generate estimators which also possess excellent inlier‐controlling capability. The corresponding tests of hypothesis are shown to have better power breakdown than the Hellinger deviance test in the cases examined.     

Effects of neighbourhood demographic shifts on findings of environmental injustice: a New York City case-study

Summary We study the question of how changes in neighbourhood demographics affect findings of environmental equity. Many cross-sectional studies of association between neighbourhood racial and ethnic composition and the location of environmentally undesirable sites have been conducted. However, no evaluations have been conducted that examine how neighbourhood demographics change over time, and how those changes are related to the observed cross-sectional results. If the question is whether an observed association is the result of discrimination, it is crucial that the historical changes in neighbourhood structure are well understood. We develop some methods based on standard statistical techniques and illustrate their application by using the metropolitan New York City region as a case-study.
