Raising Self-esteem through Social Networking Intervention for Older Chinese Adults in Hong Kong

Sudden physical changes can take a toll on older adults' self-esteem. Broadening their social support networks is one approach to retaining their self-esteem. This quasi-experimental study aims to test the effectiveness of a social networking program to raise self-esteem. The results from split-group analyses demonstrate that those who maintained active participation exhibited higher self-esteem. The results provide significant implications for future practice, especially to the less-educated males.     

Media reputation in initial public offerings: A study of financial news coverage in Hong Kong

This study investigated media reputation in initial public offerings (IPOs) by proposing eight attributes of substantive media reputation from environmental and product-resource perspectives. A content analysis on financial news coverage (2281 newspaper articles from 2004 to 2010) in Hong Kong was conducted to examine how print media reported financial and nonfinancial information on 38 IPO firms in the sectors of financial, properties and construction, and consumer goods. Results from partial least squares analysis showed that, although substantive media reputation and recency of news coverage together only explained a small proportion of changes in IPO share price, substantive media reputation has a significant positive effect on changes in IPO share price. Apart from the significant positive effect from the presentation tone of environmental attributes, the tone of social attributes had a significant negative effect on substantive media reputation. With the increasing concern on measuring media reputation attributes in financial news coverage across different contexts, this study contributes to the applicability of environmental and product-resource attributes in the specific context of IPOs.     

解读《林巨正》的对知识分子的审视——韩国现代名著研究

洪命熹在朝鲜现代文学史上占有举足轻重的地位,他和崔南善、李光洙被称为朝鲜三天才。他不仅作为一名作家,更是作为一名民族解放运动家而名满天下。他的创作大力推进了朝鲜文学从近代到现代的过渡。洪命熹仅有的一部作品《林巨正》是一部百科全书式的大河历史小说,被誉为奇书。其书以林巨正的视角,剖析知识分子的形象,探讨知识分子在朝鲜现代史上表现出的特殊性,达到窥斑见豹的目的。对该书研究应展示对林巨正典型形象的立体性分析及小说的科学性解读。     

Prevalence and risk and protective factors associated with HIV-related behavior among transgender people in Hong Kong

Abstract

This paper presents findings from the first large-scale quantitative study into HIV-related behavior among transgender people in Hong Kong. A survey of 195 transgender people found that only one-third of those who had engaged in sexual behavior in the past 3?months reported consistent condom use. Stable relationships, beliefs in low HIV transmission risk, and condom inaccessibility were cited as reasons for inconsistent condom use. The HIV testing figures were also strikingly low. This study demonstrates an urgent need for addressing HIV issues among transgender people in Hong Kong as there are currently no such specific services.     

The post-80s generation: exploring the attitudes toward family and housing

ABSTRACT

Previous literature has paid attention to housing pathways and cohort features of young people, but studies connecting the two themes are lacking. This paper offers a perspective on the cohort analysis of young people based on their housing choices and aspirations. With empirical evidence from a two-round social survey, this study explores the ‘not leaving home’ pattern of the housing choices of young people in Hong Kong. With some supplementary subgroup analysis, the cohort label of a ‘post-80s generation’ in Hong Kong is challenged. Contradictions are revealed in the views of our young people about housing and family life, and further analysis is conducted to examine the impacts of economic and sociocultural factors in the local context of Hong Kong. This study argues that we need to look beyond the shared features and subgroup differences and consider how sociocultural factors, particularly gender, marriage, education, and social norms, interact with economic factors to shape housing choices, aspirations and apparent contradictions in the viewpoints of young people regarding their personal development and housing futures. In doing so, the paper also engages with debates around intra and intergenerational dynamics and inequalities. The paper focuses on Hong Kong but these debates have international resonance.     

Scalar politics,language ideologies,and the sociolinguistics of globalization among transnational Korean professionals in Hong Kong

This paper argues that the sociolinguistics of globalization is accompanied by a constitutive scalar politics. Based on ten interviews with Korean professionals in Hong Kong, we report that Korean migrants’ use and experience of English is characterized by competing language ideologies we identify as: Pragmatic English/Perfect English, Multilingualism/English Only, and Global Language/Local Language. Tensions within these ideologies were revealed as respondents referenced the contexts of their daily lives as intersecting sets of geographic, temporal, and social scales. We discuss how sociolinguistic relations associated with the transnational lifecourse, hybridizing identity, and racialization were imagined in ways that re‐negotiated these scales to serve the interests of the participants and provide coherence to their communicative practices. Sociolinguistic relations both reference scales and constitute them. We conclude that attending to scales and scalar politics provides a better explanatory framework for the ways the uneven linguistics markets of globalization are negotiated by transnational subjects.     

从解构主义翻译观视角简析《红楼梦》的不同翻译

<红楼梦>是中国古典文学的瑰宝,也是中国文学创作的奇葩,对它的研究和批评形成了至今仍蓬勃发展的"红学".<红楼梦>在世界文坛也享有极高的声誉,它的全译本在许多国家陆续出现,甚至在某些国家拥有十几种版本.因而对<红楼梦>的不同翻译也成了众多学者热衷的课题.在借鉴和吸收前人优秀研究成果的基础上,以辩证翻译系统观为哲学指导,以解构主义为主要理论基础,采用理论与实证、定量与定性、分析和综合相结合的方法,综合分析它的两个著名全译本: ADream of ReDMansions 和The Story of the Stone,力求系统掌握解构主义在<红楼梦>翻译乃至整个中国文学翻译过程中的价值所在,进而推动"红学"的不断发展和扩大"红学"的研究领域.

香港语用现状分析

语用的研究应该是社会、语言、人三位一体的研究，人既是语用的操纵者，也是语用的服从者。人在语用中的“二重性”阐释使语言本质的说明更显具象性。本文在对香港语用现状的分析中，由行为表层而至意识深层来揭示人类交际活动底层所蕴含的人文心理，进一步实证语言的独特性乃在于其社会性和人文性的统一。双语制（或多语制）态势下的语言异化进程具有其多面性及复杂性，而香港语用现象的现实，则是研究语言本质的实例之一。
