Escalation of commitment to a failing course of action is an enduring problem that remains central to the study of managerial behavior. Prior research suggests that escalation behavior results when decision makers choose to ignore negative feedback concerning the viability of a previously chosen course of action. Previous work has also suggested that certain cognitive biases might promote escalation behavior, but there has been little attempt to explore how biases other than framing affect escalation. In this article, we explore the extent to which decision makers actually perceive negative feedback as indicative of a problem and how this influences their decision to escalate. Although problem recognition and cognitive biases have been intensively studied individually, little is known about their effect on escalation behavior. In this research, we construct and test an escalation decision model that incorporates both problem recognition and two cognitive biases: selective perception and illusion of control. Our results revealed a significant inverse relationship between problem recognition and escalation. Furthermore, selective perception and illusion of control were found to significantly affect both problem recognition and escalation. The implications of these findings for research and practice are discussed. To improve problem recognition and reduce the incidence of escalation, practicing managers should implement modern project management practices that can help to identify and highlight potential problems while guarding against these two key cognitive biases that promote the behavior.  相似文献

During times of significant change to organizations in strategies and structures, employees can experience high levels of stress as their jobs, areas of responsibility and roles also change. Yet research is curiously silent about how people react to organizational change, especially towards promoting healthy responses to change. As a first step to outlining areas for future research this paper considers a range of individual and organizational strategies that may be effective in reducing employee stress and related problems. Prior to the implementation of these strategies, however, organizations must empower employees to adopt the role of change agent and encourage them to take action to solve the problems that stress them. At the individual level, employees can respond to the stress created by organizational change by using problem- and emotion-focused strategies. Also important in coping with change are the personal resources of employees, including a sense of hardiness, beliefs about having control over their work environment, and the availability of social supports within and outside the organization. Although few organizations fully acknowledge their role in helping employees cope with change, there are a number of initiatives that organizations can pursue. Several strategies are discussed in relation to communication, leadership, job-related tasks and stress management programmes.  相似文献

This paper presents a heuristic algorithm for finding a good solution for the sequence-dependent lot scheduling problem. Unlike available methods, the algorithm eliminates the need for creating new artificial problems and implementing feasibility tests. It also eliminates the tedious task of translating setup relationships into a mathematical programming formulation. The result is a conceptually simple solution technique that is practically motivated and easily implemented for use on the shop floor. Comparison of algorithm performance with published results demonstrates the efficacy of the approach.  相似文献

现代性概念具有双重意蕴,即外在制度结构层面的理性化和内在文化心理层面的感觉化,现代性问题的实质是价值理想的缺失与生存意义的危机。围绕着现代性问题而产生了自由主义、保守主义、后现代主义、马克思主义等的回应方式;如果我们确认中国不可避免地要建构的现代性同时也应该是一个亲切的精神家园,那么无论在理论上还是在实践上都必须回答和解决如下三大问题:一是传统文化的现代转化;二是外在的形式化制度结构的建构;三是现代人心性结构的重建。这三大问题所展开的论域可以说是在现代性问题背景下马克思主义哲学中国化的一种可能形态。  相似文献
