We study the dynamic routing problem for a flexible manufacturing system consisting of two unreliable machines and a finite buffer. One product-type is produced which requires two operations in sequence. The demand rate is assumed to be constant. Each machine is capable of performing both operations. The objective is to trace the demand while keeping the work-in-process low and the cycle-time short. An optimal control formulation is established for the dynamic routing problem. A production flow control algorithm is developed based on a combination of mathematical modeling and heuristics. The control policy is simulated and a comparison with the numerical optimal solution shows that it performs well for the instances under consideration.  相似文献

In this article, I examine the transnational mobility of digital workers and the control of their labour across multiple production sites. The digitalization of work has progressively allowed businesses to outsource IT‐enabled service jobs to cheaper production sites offshore. The growth of the ‘offshore outsourcing' of white‐collar service jobs in East Asia has produced the mobility of cheap digital labour from Japan to Dalian in northeast China. They work at call centres and other Japanese‐speaking workplaces in the lower echelons of the city's IT sector, typically earning salaries in Chinese yuan at, or even below, the average Japanese minimum wage. Based on ethnographic findings, I argue that in the global digital economy, digital services are rendered exploitable through their transnational mobility and that this form of labour migration has developed because of the partial, fluid and contingent nature of the transnational links between the two locations. I analyse how the neoliberal logic of exception underpins the creation of IT parks in China and the casualization of labour in Japan to enable new forms of transnational labour control and capital accumulation.  相似文献

This is an investigation into how optimal production rates and optimal price levels react to the introduction of an environmental tax on emissions. While, in the case of perfect competition, a linear tax has no effect, I show that in the monopolistic case the optimal production and emissions rates decrease in all instances-without an additional smoothing effect. The desirable effect, emissions peaks being cut off, is only achieved when a progressive tax is imposed.  相似文献

A growing recognition that quality management is an important factor in defining a firm's competitive position has led to renewed attention to this function and has resulted in implementation of elaborate systems for on-line quality control comprising product inspection and process control. Traditionally, these functions have been treated independently, with very little interaction. In this paper we examine, in detail, a scheme that integrates the two functions, and we demonstrate that such an approach can result in significant cost savings. The motivation for this work comes from our experience in a wafer fabrication facility that suggested that exchange of quality information between different stages of production could result in significant performance improvements. To illustrate this approach, we consider a specific environment characterized by a single-stage continuous production process whose status is monitored by an X̄ control chart. We assume that quality-related costs may be described as a function of the process output. This is analogous to Taguchi's quality loss function and may be interpreted as a generalization of conventional classification of process output as either acceptable or defective units. The integrative scheme essentially relies on utilization of the process status information (based on process control) in making product inspection decisions. For this system we derive a cost model and develop a solution procedure to determine optimal decision parameters. Limited computational results indicate that the scheme has significant potential for reducing quality-related costs.  相似文献

Originally conceived by Frank and Lillian Gilbreth, the “tabletop improvement experiments” have been used in Japan since 1925 to teach important principles of continuous improvement. The experiments, designed for classroom use, communicate their lessons in a striking and memorable way. The work-related experiments categorize the sources of resistance to change and show how to neutralize them. The process-related experiments sharpen understanding of where the biggest opportunities for process improvement usually lie. Surprisingly, the experiments are hardly known in the West. The paper presents an alternative understandingof managerial work based upon a reconstruction of laborprocess theory. Drawing upon contemporary studies ofmanagement practice, the paper explores the relevance of poststructuralism and an attentiveness tosubjectivity to articulate a view of managerial work asthe subject and object of the contradictory organizationand control of capitalist labor processes. We developed a taxonomy of service processes in electronic retailing using data from 255 electronic food retailers. The taxonomy is comprised of eight service process configurations. Analysis of publicly available data on on‐line customer ratings for 52 retailers in the study sample shows that the ordering of the configurations in the taxonomy on a continuum of low to high flexibility is associated positively with (i) customer satisfaction with web site aesthetics, web site navigation, product selection, product information, customer support, and ease of return, and (ii) customer loyalty.  相似文献

This paper studies issues associated with designing process control systems when the testing equipment is subjected to random shifts. We consider a production process with two states: in control and out of control. The process may shift randomly to the out‐of‐control state over time. The process is monitored by periodically sampling finished items from the process. The equipment used to test sampled items also is assumed to have two states and may shift randomly during the testing process. We formulate a cost model for finding the optimal process control policy that minimizes the expected unit time cost. Numerical results show that shifts of the testing equipment may significantly affect the performance of a process control policy. We also studied the effects of the testing equipment's shifts on the selection of process control policies.  相似文献

This paper deals with the three waves of the discourse on group work in social science and industrial practice that have helped pave the way for the current boom in the introduction of group work in companies. These waves are represented by the human relations approach, the sociotechnical systems approach, and the lean management debate. They are reviewed in two perspectives. The first relates to their concepts of work design and group work, following four questions: (a) What emphasis is put on work factors or on subjective orientations, on the design of working conditions or symbolic strategies? (b) How do the various approaches address the relationship between efficiency and control? (c) Which concepts of participation or democracy are involved? (d) How is the role of the social scientist in the process of industrial modernization conceptualized, explicitly or implicitly? The second perspective from a sociology of science relates to the context of production and utilization of social scientific knowledge. In general, two theses are put forward. The first states that a gap exists between the aspirations and reality of group work because the basic conflict of efficiency and control has been overlooked for ideological reasons. The second postulates that there is no linear progress in the theory and practice of group work. It seems that the socioeconomical context determines reasonably which group concept and ideology dominates certain historical phases of industrial modernization.  相似文献

In this article, we explore the genesis andoperation of Business Process Reengineering (BPR) withina medium-sized U.K. bank from the late 1980s to themid-1990s. We dismiss the claims of those evangelical gurus who assume that BPR can bedecontextualized and decoupled from organizationalpolitics and posit that BPR can be managedinstantaneously and unproblematically. Instead we arguethat BPR is likely to be constituted by and through politicalrelations, and that BPR in turn will reconstituteorganizational forms and norms, in a highly politicalfashion. We endeavor to build upon current approachestoward organizational politics. We illustrate thatpolitics is not simply about resistance to some putativeorganizational norm of stability or uniformity as BPR'sgurus imply. Nor does it deriveexclusively from diverse interest groups pursuing separateor conflicting ends that can be juggled and managed asprocessual or pluralistic accounts of organizationalchange tend to assume. Neither, in this instance, can one interpret politics as being entirelyaxiomatic with labor's resistance to management(capital) which is characteristic of a traditional laborprocess analysis, although expressions of this were apparent in our case study. We suggest thatpolitics also needs to be understood interms of power and identity relations or how individualsseek, through political maneuverings, to further or secure their individual careers andidentities in an uncertain world. In view of this, weargue that politics are essential to the very fabric oforganizational life, which renders the outcomes of BPR uncertain and contested.  相似文献
