Ideology and Poetics in the English Translation of Ah Q Zheng Zhuan

Translation is rewriting under the control of ideology and poetics. Patrons affect the ideology and professionals pay more attention to poetics. By a comparative study, it is discussed that translators' ideology and poetics have great influence on translation strategies in the English translation of Ah Q Zheng Zhuan. Translators can have certain impacts on their own translation activities with their personal ideology and poetics.     

Determinants of a throwaway society - A sustainable consumption issue

The purpose of this paper is to present a clearer understanding of how several key socio-economic variables impact municipal solid waste (MSW). Although the variables of interest arise from deeply entrenched micro-economic behaviors at the household level, the analysis can be extrapolated to the international level. Two of the variables, which are a time factor and a consumption discount rate, are empirically tested with an international dataset and have been found to be significant predictors of MSW per capita.

长期以来,国内学术界总是把阿Q与"国民性"联系起来进行解读,《阿Q正传》也被认为是鲁迅批判国民性的集大成之作。尽管小说确实有批判国民性的一面,但是,对这一方面的过度强调,使我们仅仅关注于阿Q行状的国民性,而遮蔽掉了小说序言中的某些重要信息。鲁迅批判的对象并不仅仅只是阿Q这样的愚昧民众,他同时也指向了那些掌握着话语权的新旧知识分子。通过序言及小说中对赵秀才、钱假洋鬼子的书写,从而把虚构的小说与现实的生活联系了起来,促使读者去重新反思知识分子存在的价值和意义。     

Inference for the Birnbaum–Saunders Lifetime Regression Model with Applications

The Birnbaum–Saunders distribution is a positively skewed distribution that is frequently used for analyzing lifetime data. Regression analysis is widely used in this context when some covariates are involved in the life-test. In this article, we discuss the maximum likelihood estimation of the model parameters and associated inference. We discuss the likelihood-ratio tests for some hypotheses of interest as well as some interval estimation methods. A Monte Carlo simulation study is then carried out to examine the performance of the proposed estimators and the interval estimation methods. Finally, some numerical data analyses are done for illustrating all the inferential methods developed here.     

MONITORING IN TEAMS: USING LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS TO STUDY A THEORY OF THE FIRM

Alchian and Demsetz’s influential explanation of the classical business firm (The American Economic Review, 1972, 62, 777–795) argues that there is need for a concentrated residual claim in the hands of a central agent, to motivate the monitoring of workers. We model monitoring as a way to transform team production from a collective action dilemma with strong free riding incentives to a productivity‐enhancing opportunity with strong private marginal incentives to contribute effort. In an experiment, we have subjects experience team production without monitoring, team production with a central monitor, and team production with peer monitoring. Then subjects vote on whether to employ the central monitor, who gets to keep a fixed share of the team output, or to rely on peer monitoring, which entails a coordination or free riding problem. Our subjects usually prefer peer monitoring but they switch to the specialist when unable to successfully self‐monitor. We provide evidence for situations in which team members resist the appointing of a central monitor and succeed in overcoming coordination and free riding problems as well as for a situation in which an Alchian–Demsetz‐like firm grows in the laboratory.

The impact of rice research expenditure policy in Thailand

This study explored the economic, social and environmental impact of Thai rice research expenditure (categorized as breeding expenditure, production expenditure and processing expenditure) during 2008–2015, using the simultaneous equation modeling technique. The results showed that production-research expenditure was the most explicit to reduce the amount of nitrogen fertilizer usage, while breeding-research expenditure was the most explicit in terms of increasing farmers’ economic status from planting rice. Processing expenditure seemed to be the least effective spending among the three types.
