元赋“祖骚宗汉”论

文章认为,“祖骚宗汉”实质上是元人不满于律赋的偏尚俳偶与文赋的倾于理趣,却又缺少情感或藻彩而提出的一个辞赋革新的口号。在这面旗帜下,元赋作家学习楚辞,宣泄失志之悲,驰骋想象,展开入地升天的描写;也学习汉赋的颂美皇家和铺陈讽谏。这些努力强化了元赋的抒情性和生动性,复兴了古赋的宏大气势,使之获得较高的文学价值,并奠定了明清辞赋以古为主的格局。元赋的不足是思想境界稍欠高迥,也缺少全新的创造。     

Stepniak and the friends of Russia

This paper discusses the activities of Stepniak once he arrived in Britain in 1884. In particular, it is concerned to trace Stepniak's relations with Socialist groups. Although work has already been completed on his contact with Liberals, this other aspect of his activity, symbolized by the founding of the shortlived Society of Friends of Russia, has been relatively neglected. It is possible, however, to unearth the various contacts with socialists that this emigre made in the 11 years that he was politically active in this country. It was these individuals rather than the Liberals he knew, that kept alive Stepniak's memory.     

Does trust increase willingness to pay higher taxes to help the needy?

The article studies the causal effect of trust on the willingness to pay higher taxes to help the needy in a sample of 29 countries of Eastern and Southern Europe, and the former Soviet Union and Mongolia. It is hypothesized that interpersonal trust leads to a greater willingness to pay taxes to help the needy since (i) trust increases the likelihood of helping strangers; (ii) trust fosters solidarity and cooperation when working to solve common problems in society; and (iii) trust reduces suspicion with respect to the perceived misuse of redistributed money. Three key findings are that the more people trust each other, the more they are ready to support the welfare state; the effect of trust on welfare state support holds even in a contextual environment characterized by rather lower levels of trust and relatively underdeveloped systems of redistribution; and higher individual‐level trust fosters tax morale and helps deter tax evasion.

Historic preservation: A comparative analyses

Historic preservation has, to date, received relatively little attention from sociologists, usually meriting only brief mention under topics of urban gentrification or community organization. But within the context of its history and its significance in modern society, preservation emerges as a multilevel response to industrialization and related processes of social change: what gets preserved and how it is symbolically interpreted depends upon the class structure of society and the related social mapping of time and place. The following comparative analysis of preservation in Great Britain and the United States demonstrates the importance of these factors.
