The present study tested the theory that negative affect and one’s ability to tolerate distress is associated with failure
to quit gambling during an abstinence attempt. Specifically, 16 current pathological gamblers who had at least one sustained
period of gambling abstinence lasting a minimum of 3 months (i.e., delayed relapsers) and 16 current pathological gamblers
who had never remained abstinent for a period longer than 2 weeks (i.e., immediate relapsers), were assessed for baseline
levels of negative affect and stress reactivity, as well as faced with a psychological (mental arithmetic) and physical (breath
holding) stressor. Compared to the delayed relapsers, the immediate relapsers displayed higher levels of negative affect and
stress reactivity. Immediate relapsers also were less likely to persist on the psychological stressor, suggesting that one’s
ability to tolerate the initial discomfort of an abstinence attempt may play an important role in gambling treatment outcome.

This article considers the role of affect in university branding in a context of neoliberal higher education, by way of examining the semiotic landscape of the Singapore Management University concourse. Contemporary branding often involves stimulating stakeholder/audience investments of meaning and affect into the brand, thereby appropriating consumers’ affective labour for brand‐building and communications. Adopting a discourse‐analytic approach, I examine how linguistic, visual and spatial modalities are utilized to evoke and semiotize particular affective meanings and orientations in the emplaced discourse within the university's brand space. This discourse, which includes organizational branding discourse as well as more organic student‐generated texts, becomes part of the affective regime, helping to encourage and enjoin what is deemed to be normative affective sensibilities and practices in that context. Consequently, the article also considers the kinds of affective subjectivities that are valorized, and how stakeholder/student‐subjects are interpellated in a context of neoliberal‐oriented higher education. 相似文献

Understanding is an essential clinical practice skill, one which draws upon cognitive and affective, conscious and unconscious abilities. This paper explores the challenges posed by cross-cultural understanding. Using concepts from anthropology and data from anthropological field work and clinical practice, it examines cultural differences in the experience and communication of affect. Clinical examples from Northern Thailand are used to illustrate the ways these subtle and complex differences in clients’ affective worlds challenge our capacity to understand those who are culturally different. Implications for cross-cultural social work practice are addressed.Catherine Nye received her MSW from Virginia Commonwealth University, and her PhD in psychology from The Committee on Human Development at the University of Chicago.
