Suppressing marginal totals from a two-dimensional table to protect sensitive information

The technique of data suppression for protecting sensitive information in a two-dimensional table from exact disclosure raises the computational problems of testing a given table of censored data for security, and searching for a secure suppression pattern of minimum size for a given table. We provide a polynomial security test to solve the former problem, and prove that the latter problem is intractable in the general case, but can be solved in linear time in the special case in which only sensitive cells are to be protected.

Expected utility, μ-σ preferences,and linear distribution classes: A further result

This article is an extension of Meyer and Sinn's results on the representation of arbitrary von Neumann-Morgenstern functions in - space when the probability distributions to be compared belong to a linear distribution class. It shows that, when absolute risk aversion decreases, stays constant, or increases not too fast, an increase in , given , increases the indifference curve slope: increased riskiness increases the required marginal compensation for risk when risk is measured by the standard deviation of wealth or income.I gratefully acknowledge useful comments by Wolfgang Buchholz, Kai Konrad, Jack Meyer, Hans Schneeweiß, Dominique Thon, and Bengt Arne Wickström.

The order statistics of exponential,power function and pareto distributions and some applications

Some relations between the exponential, the Pareto and the Power function distributions and their order statistics are given. These relations are employed to obtain some characterization theorems of Pareto and Power distributions.     

Testing for a separation between two normal distributions

Three tests are proposed for testing for a specified degree of overlap between two normal distributions, The hypotheses considered are an extension of the Behrens-Fisher problem, A simulation study of the performance of the tests is presented.     

Determining the birth function for an age structured population

This paper deals with an inverse problem in age‐structured population dynamics, namely the recovery of the unknown birth function from the additional or overposed data consisting of the total population over a time interval equal to the maximum life span of the species. Conditions on the data are given to guarantee the existence and uniqueness of a solution, and the question of continuous dependence of the birth function on the data is addressed. Some numerical simulations are presented to indicate that one can in fact use the methods of the paper to reconstruct the birth function.     

Comparison of Kernel Discriminant Coordinates Algorithms

The construction of kernel discriminant coordinates reduces to the solution of a generalized eigenvalue problem in which both matrices are nonnegative definite. Six different algorithms for solving that problem are described, and the performance of these algorithms is tested on 26 different datasets. The percentage of misclassifications using a linear discriminant function is noted, and the algorithms’ running times are ascertained. Classification is also performed in the space of classical discriminant coordinates.     

The Relationship Between the Level of Personal Empowerment and Quality of Life Among Psychosocial Clubhouse Members and Consumer-Operated Drop-In Center Participants

Abstract

This cross-sectional, correlational study examined the relationship between personal empowerment and quality of life among 151 mental health consumers (77 psychosocial clubhouse members and 74 consumer-operated drop-in center participants). This study also evaluated the group differences between empowerment and quality of life. Data collected from face-to-face interviews indicate a positive relationship between personal empowerment and quality of life, with drop-in center participants reporting slightly higher levels of personal empowerment than clubhouse members. Mixed results were found between the two groups with respect to subjective and objective quality of life measures. The results of this study suggest an important association between the ability to make life choices and a mental health consumer's quality of life, especially when high levels of social contact are a part of everyday life.     

Teaching Students by Having Them Emulate an Expert System

Summary

An expert system, designed to demonstrate a procedure that students found difficult to master, became the stimulus and the prototype for developing a better way to teach this material. The new method was to have students simulate the computer by rigidly following a set of explicit instructions. This enabled the students to learn what formerly eluded them: the logical deduction of new hypotheses from a set of linkable propositions. Success in carrying out this mechanical task became the basis for their understanding the logic behind the procedure.
