The present study was concerned with identifying the causes of low-income preschoolers' negative emotions and their most common regulation responses. The relations of family socialization practices and temperament to the children's emotion regulation skills were also examined. Ninety predominantly minority low-income preschoolers (46 boys) and their mothers participated. During visits to the children's preschools, observers watched for expressions of anger and sadness, and recorded the causes of the displays and the children's reactions. Mothers reported on their emotion socialization and discipline practices and their children's temperament. Although the children expressed more anger than sadness, they used more constructive reactions in response to sadness and more non-constructive reactions in response to anger. Maternal reports of appropriate family emotion were associated with low levels of non-constructive regulation responses to anger and sadness whereas reports of inconsistent parental discipline were generally associated with non-constructive regulation responses. All in all, the findings of this study are in accord with findings on middle-income children and indicate that low- and middle-income children are more alike than different with regard to the regulation of negative emotion in the peer environment. 相似文献

The efficiency of education in East and Southeast Turkey (E&SE) has long been a subject of debate. Both regions are similar to each other and different from the other regions in terms of economy, culture, ethnic origin, and languages spoken. Sahin (1997) studied the efficiency of education in the E&SE and proposed that illiteracy is significantly the highest in both regions, the female student population is significantly lower, and students are significantly less successful in nationwide general proficiency examinations (OSS and OYS) compared to all the other regions. Social sources of failure were studied in terms of the distinguishing characteristics of both regions, from both practical and theoretical standpoints. San Antonio, Texas, the seventh largest city in the United States, has experienced steady population growth, since the “boom”
of the 1960s. Projected water shortages due to this growth were realized as early as the 1970s by city leaders and south-central
Texas regional development decision makers. To reduce dependence on the already over-taxed, Edwards aquifer, a solution, the
Applewhite Dam and Reservoir Project, was developed with wide acceptance by federal, state, and city leaders who regarded
the project as a necessary measure for regional growth and development. However, opposition by taxpayer and environmental
groups led to referendums of 1991 and 1994 in which voters blocked construction of the dam and reservoir leaving the city
with limited options for water provision. This case study investigated the factors which led to a clear mismatch in communication
between decision makers—those who were aware of the actual and quantifiable risk to the region in terms of reduced water supplies—and
the general public, a population that did not have complete and/or adequate knowledge of their actual risk regarding future
water shortages, nor, of solutions being developed, such as the Applewhite project. The findings from this case study indicate
that when municipal leadership fails to adequately communicate risk regarding resource shortage to an affected public, as
well as, openly planned solutions, that voters are likely to underestimate future impacts of water shortages, heed last-minute
opposition, and reject long-standing, publicly proposed projects. The intent of this research is not to support either side
in the Applewhite controversy, but to shed perspective on the process of adequately and effectively communicating future water
needs to an at-risk population. Decision makers in cities across the United States who are faced with solving problems of
limited resources needed by a large populace may be informed by the results of this research. 相似文献
