Projecting losses associated with hurricanes is a complex and difficult undertaking that is wrought with uncertainties. Hurricane Charley, which struck southwest Florida on August 13, 2004, illustrates the uncertainty of forecasting damages from these storms. Due to shifts in the track and the rapid intensification of the storm, real-time estimates grew from 2 to 3 billion dollars in losses late on August 12 to a peak of 50 billion dollars for a brief time as the storm appeared to be headed for the Tampa Bay area. The storm hit the resort areas of Charlotte Harbor near Punta Gorda and then went on to Orlando in the central part of the state, with early poststorm estimates converging on a damage estimate in the 28 to 31 billion dollars range. Comparable damage to central Florida had not been seen since Hurricane Donna in 1960. The Florida Commission on Hurricane Loss Projection Methodology (FCHLPM) has recognized the role of computer models in projecting losses from hurricanes. The FCHLPM established a professional team to perform onsite (confidential) audits of computer models developed by several different companies in the United States that seek to have their models approved for use in insurance rate filings in Florida. The team's members represent the fields of actuarial science, computer science, meteorology, statistics, and wind and structural engineering. An important part of the auditing process requires uncertainty and sensitivity analyses to be performed with the applicant's proprietary model. To influence future such analyses, an uncertainty and sensitivity analysis has been completed for loss projections arising from use of a Holland B parameter hurricane wind field model. Uncertainty analysis quantifies the expected percentage reduction in the uncertainty of wind speed and loss that is attributable to each of the input variables.  相似文献

For the problems of nonparametric estimation of nonincreasing and symmetric unimodal density functions with bounded supports we determine the projections of estimates onto the convex families of possible parent densities with respect to the weighted integrated squared error. We also describe the method of approximating the analogous projections onto the respective density classes satisfying some general moment conditions. The method of projections reduces the estimation errors for all possible values of observations of a given finite sample size in a uniformly optimal way and provides estimates sharing the properties of the parent densities.  相似文献

In high dimensional classification problem, two stage method, reducing the dimension of predictor first and then applying the classification method, is a natural solution and has been widely used in many fields. The consistency of the two stage method is an important issue, since errors induced by dimension reduction method inevitably have impacts on the following classification method. As an effective method for classification problem, boosting has been widely used in practice. In this paper, we study the consistency of two stage method–dimension reduction based boosting algorithm (briefly DRB) for classification problem. Theoretical results show that Lipschitz condition on the base learner is required to guarantee the consistency of DRB. This theoretical findings provide useful guideline for application.  相似文献

We develop strategies for Bayesian modelling as well as model comparison, averaging and selection for compartmental models with particular emphasis on those that occur in the analysis of positron emission tomography (PET) data. Both modelling and computational issues are considered. Biophysically inspired informative priors are developed for the problem at hand, and by comparison with default vague priors it is shown that the proposed modelling is not overly sensitive to prior specification. It is also shown that an additive normal error structure does not describe measured PET data well, despite being very widely used, and that within a simple Bayesian framework simultaneous parameter estimation and model comparison can be performed with a more general noise model. The proposed approach is compared with standard techniques using both simulated and real data. In addition to good, robust estimation performance, the proposed technique provides, automatically, a characterisation of the uncertainty in the resulting estimates which can be considerable in applications such as PET.  相似文献

Sliced regression is an effective dimension reduction method by replacing the original high-dimensional predictors with its appropriate low-dimensional projection. It is free from any probabilistic assumption and can exhaustively estimate the central subspace. In this article, we propose to incorporate shrinkage estimation into sliced regression so that variable selection can be achieved simultaneously with dimension reduction. The new method can improve the estimation accuracy and achieve better interpretability for the reduced variables. The efficacy of proposed method is shown through both simulation and real data analysis.  相似文献

In this paper we study the sampling properties of a test statistic which has important applications in the area of linear stochastic control systems with multi-inputs and multi-outputs. The statistic is the ratio of a partial sum of the eigenvalues of a sample covariance matrix and its trace. It turns out that using a method due to Sugiura we may derive a useful approximation for its distribution up to and including terms of order l/n, where n denotes the appropriate size. To reduce the dimensionality of regression problems, sliced inverse regression approaches make it possible to determine linear combinations of a set of explanatory variables X related to the response variable Y in general semiparametric regression context. From a practical point of view, the determination of a suitable dimension (number of the linear combination of X) is important. In the literature, statistical tests based on the nullity of some eigenvalues have been proposed. Another approach is to consider the quality of the estimation of the effective dimension reduction (EDR) space. The square trace correlation between the true EDR space and its estimate can be used as goodness of estimation. In this article, we focus on the SIRα method and propose a naïve bootstrap estimation of the square trace correlation criterion. Moreover, this criterion could also select the α parameter in the SIRα method. We indicate how it can be used in practice. A simulation study is performed to illustrate the behavior of this approach.  相似文献
