The Transition to Parenthood for Lesbian Couples

Abstract

While there is a slowly growing literature on lesbians with older children, the literature on the transition to parenthood for lesbian couples is scant. The current study examines aspects of the transition to parenthood experience for 29 lesbian couples. Specifically, this study explores aspects of couples' decision-making regarding alternative insemination (e.g., who would carry and bear the child, donor type), perceptions of social support across the transition to parenthood, and availability and use of legal safeguards (such as wills, powers of attorney, and coparent adoptions by nonbiological mothers). Future studies should explore how single lesbians manage the transition to parenthood. Research on lesbians and gay men who are pursuing parenthood through adoption is also needed.     

Differences in Caregiver Self-Efficacy and Satisfaction Related to Sexual Abuse of Offspring

Research suggests parents of sexually abused children may experience negative perceptions of themselves and their parenting abilities following the victimization of their children, which may influence the recovery process in treatment for these families. This study assessed perceived self-efficacy and parenting satisfaction among female caregivers of sexually abused children and female caregivers whose children were not victimized. Results indicated that caregivers of child victims had significantly lower levels of perceived parenting efficacy than their counterparts. There were no significant differences found between groups with regard to parenting satisfaction. The results highlight the importance of evaluating perceived parenting competence in the treatment of nonoffending caregivers in order to facilitate optimal treatment of the child victim and all members of the family system.

Child custody issues and co‐occurrence of intimate partner violence and child maltreatment: controversies and points of agreement amongst practitioners

The situation of families undergoing separation in a context of co‐occurrence of intimate partner violence (IPV) and child maltreatment raises certain issues related to child custody. The results presented in this paper were collected and analysed within the framework of a qualitative study aiming to identify the principal points of agreement and the main controversies amongst practitioners in several different types of organizations. Focus groups were held with a total of 43 practitioners from six different settings concerned with child custody in cases of co‐occurrence of IPV and child maltreatment. Although they agreed on the importance of ensuring the safety of victims of violence, their views diverged on three points: (1) the importance of preserving the father–child relationship; (2) collaboration between voluntary organizations and semi‐voluntary or legal agencies; and (3) consideration of cultural differences.     

Does Attitudinal Consensus Lead to Neighborhood Collaboration? An Exploratory Analysis of an Urban Community

This article examines whether high levels of attitudinal consensus on community needs and civic responsibilities among a community's residents are associated with effective collaborative efforts among that community's neighborhood associations. Drawing upon both quantitative and qualitative data from an evaluation of an umbrella organization in an urban community, the authors found only a weak connection between attitudinal consensus, which was strong to moderate on most issues, and effective neighborhood association collaboration. The authors conclude that attitudinal consensus may be a necessary first step toward building effective collaboration but is far from sufficient to foster meaningful and stable partnerships. The authors explore the reasons for the lack of effective collaboration, offer suggestions for addressing barriers to collaboration, and discuss the implications of the findings for community building initiatives that aim to build social capital, particularly across “difference,” in distressed and diverse urban communities.

水利工程建设是中国社会经济发展的必然要求。但是,水利工程也会引发一些社会问题,对社会的发展产生一定的影响。本文从发展和历史的角度考察了水利工程建设中存在的社会问题,并指出了产生这些问题的深层原因。针对产生问题的原因,从社会学角度,提出了解决问题的关键对策是水利工程建设必须进行社会评价,并设计了水利工程社会评价体系。     

高校收费改革的问题与对策

随着高等教育大众化进程的加快,高等学校招生规模的不断扩大,高等教育收费改革势在必行,笔者认为高校收取学费与学生缴费的矛盾是改革的一个重要方面,如何调整这两者之间的矛盾,第一,拓宽高校经济来源渠道,第二,完善多元化贫困生资助体系,全面推广国家助学贷款,第三,以法律与合约的形式做好学费清缴工作.     

唯物史观研究有待拓展的几个问题

为什么中国生产力的巨大发展发生在生产关系变革之后?上个世纪50年代,我们曾自觉地进行过生产关系变革,为什么却严重阻碍了生产力发展?生产关系是否可以产生生产力?上层建筑与生产力是否存在直接联系?政府怎样以及为什么会影响经济发展。上层建筑的旨趣何在?研究这些问题有助于拓展唯物史观思维空间。     

试析民族地区经济发展中的非经济因素

本文在实地调研的基础上 ,运用了大量的文献资料 ,对民族地区非经济因素在各民族经济发展过程中的影响及方式做了较为深入的分析。认为非经济因素对民族地区的经济发展的影响是持久而深刻的 ,进而阐明在民族地区的现代化进程中 ,如果忽视了人的因素 ,单纯从经济方面架构区域发展模式是难以获得良好的发展效果的。     

中国造物艺术史研究中的核心问题 ——以包装艺术史的写作为例

造物艺术史研究之中只有赋予造物艺术史以某种新意义、新价值或者新答案的论著才称得上是具有启迪意义的论著。要做到这一点,既要求研究者必须具备良好的历史意识,更要求其在研究中把握好“源与流”“内容与形式”“历时性与共时性”“造物的因果律”等核心问题。这些问题不仅涉及能否准确把握人类物质文明发展的历史全貌,而且关乎人类历史发展动力和规律中复杂关系的揭示。造物艺术的历史,不只是物态的历史,还是一部与人有关的生产生活史。近年来,造物艺术史研究对这些问题和关系的探索,出现了两个引人瞩目的新变化：一是研究方式从描述转向阐释;二是研究视角从核心转移到了边缘。
