Introduction: social movements and forums in times of authoritarian capitalism

ABSTRACT

On all continents the enormity of the violence and danger of the times gives rise to multiple new practices of struggle and to conceptual innovations, which seek to serve justice, solidarity, and dignity for all. We explore the possibilities and different worlds intended in the main slogan of the World Social Forum ‘Another world is possible’. During its early years the World Social Forum was characterized by a fair amount of optimism. We know now that most of the high hopes of the movements have not been adequately materialized. The rise of authoritarian leaders and the nexus between capitalism and populism emerging in different parts of the world has created a new context for the attempts to create democratic futures. This collection presents and interrogates a variety of diagnoses of the present and of new strategies for transformative change that are emerging out of the forum process.     

当代中国社会伦理精神的多维阐释——第二届中国伦理学青年论坛综述

2012年6月16日至18日,＂第二届中国伦理学青年论坛暨首届中国伦理学十大杰出青年学者颁奖大会＂在井冈山大学举行。学者们围绕＂当代中国社会的伦理精神＂这一主题,从历史考察、现状探析、前景展望、国际借鉴等维度进行了广泛而深入的研究与探讨。与此同时,社会主义核心价值体系、乡村伦理、广告伦理、宪政伦理、公共行政伦理、运气的伦理审视以及潜规则下的道德生活解析等不同主题,都引发了激烈而持久的讨论。万俊人教授对此次会议研讨与交流所取得的成果予以了充分肯定,对年轻一代伦理工作者寄予了深切厚望,鼓励年轻学者在注重理论研究的同时更要关注社会现实,为当代中国的伦理建设事业贡献自己的力量。

中阿合作论坛的成就及发展趋势

中阿合作论坛的成立是中阿关系近50年来最重要的事件之一。本文通过笔者与多位阿拉伯国家驻华大使、“论坛”相关人士、中国学者间的直接对话,以及对“论坛”文献资料和数据的分析研究,回顾了“论坛”自2004年成立以来取得的成就,考察了“论坛”的成立对中阿关系的构建、发展、深化互信的影响,评估了“论坛”机制的成效。本文对“论坛”未来的发展提出了若干建议,认为中阿双方都应将中阿合作论坛当作引领中阿全面伙伴关系的重要机制和战略举措,借助这一机制和平台,全面贯彻、落实并推进中国的“一带一路”战略。     

中阿合作论坛十年回顾与展望

中阿合作论坛成立十年来,完成了正规化、机制化建设,建立起部长级会议、高官会议、企业家大会暨投资研讨会等十余项机制,几乎涵盖政治、经济、文化、人文各个领域的合作,不仅丰富了中阿合作的内涵,而且创新了合作模式,使中阿关系形成多边与双边、官方与民间相互促进、相互补充、良性发展的格局。论坛能持续快速发展,得益于坚持彼此尊重、互相理解和互利合作、共同发展的理念。在新的十年内,论坛应深化战略性,坚持创新性,突出实效性,开创论坛工作更加美好的明天。     

中阿合作论坛成立以来的中国对阿媒体交流

2004年中阿合作论坛成立至今,中国对阿媒体交流稳步发展,在中阿合作论坛框架下建立了新闻合作机制。但中国对阿媒体交流也面临一定的困境,包括已有新闻合作机制缺乏有力落实,涉阿媒体缺少大局意识和公共外交的意识,对阿媒体交流遭遇西方媒介帝国主义的压制,传播格局中民间媒体缺位和新媒体利用不够,对阿传播效果还有待提高。为了应对这些困境,中阿双方应将《中国与阿盟成员国新闻友好合作交流备忘录》的相关条款落到实处,此外,中国涉阿媒体应成为公共外交的重要主体或载体,中国要与阿拉伯媒体开展密切合作以破解西方话语霸权、注重利用新媒体进行传播、从而不断提升传播力。     

Networks of Contention: The Shape of Online Transnationalism in Early Twenty-First Century Social Movement Coalitions

The study of new media use by transnational social movements is central to contemporary investigations of social contention. In order to shed light on the terrain in which the most recent examples of online mobilization have grown and developed, this paper combines the interest in the transnational dynamics of social contention and the exploration of the use of new information and communication technologies (ICTs) for protest action. In specific terms, the study investigates how early twenty-first century social movement coalitions used Internet tools to build symbolically transnational collective identities. By applying a hyperlink network analysis approach, the study focuses on a website network generated by local chapters of the World Social Forum (WSF), one of the earliest social movement coalitions for global justice. The sample network, selected through snowball sampling, is composed of 222 social forum websites from around the world. The study specifically looks at hyperlinks among social forum websites as signs of belonging and potential means of alliance. The analysis uses network measures, namely of cohesion, centrality, structural equivalence and homophily, to test dynamics of symbolic collective identification underlying the WSF coalition. The findings show that in early twenty-first century transnational contention, culture and place still played a central role in the emergence of transnational movement networks.     

论中阿合作论坛为回族聚居区域带来的发展机遇

中阿合作论坛建立了我国与阿拉伯联盟国家进行区域合作的法律机制。我国回族在历史、文化、宗教等方面与阿拉伯国家具有相近性和关联性,这些有利因素为我国回族开展与阿拉伯国家的交往活动、发展本地区和本民族的经济提供了有利条件。我国回族应该抓住机遇,加快经济发展。但是,中阿合作论坛建立的是一种较为松散的区域合作关系,缺乏实质性的法律制度保障。再加上我国国内法律制度不够完善,我国回族对外发展受到制约,因此,我国回族要实现与阿拉伯国家的交流与合作,发展对外经济合作关系,需要依靠我国与阿拉伯国家制定实质性法律制度加以保障,需要我国国内法律制度与措施的完善。     

In search of unity: a new politics of solidarity and action for confronting the crisis of global capitalism

ABSTRACT

This essay is an introduction to a Special Forum by critical scholar-activists responding to the late Samir Amin’s call for the establishment of a new political vehicle that would be capable of uniting diverse progressive and revolutionary movements consisting of the workers and peoples of the whole world. The purpose of this vehicle would be to confront and radically transform a global capitalist order in deep crisis. The authors of these essays tend to agree that Amin was a profound contributor to the global justice movement, and to the reformulation of Marxism to address the evolution of global capitalism and imperialism that took place in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. However, some are critical of Amin’s stance. The essayists differ about whether they see Samir Amin’s proposal for the establishment of a global party as a good or bad idea. Among those who think it is a good idea there are differences regarding the organizational nature and issue focus of the proposed organization. There are also different attitudes toward the institution of the nation-state and regarding the sources of progressive revolutionary political forces in the contemporary world. We briefly review the main issues under contention.
