General Economy and Productive Dualisms

Through an investigation of the organizing potential of productive dualisms and ontological hierarchies that move toward epistemic and ontological closures, this essay theorizes the bounded potential of fluidity, and points to the possibility of waste, excess and sacrifice within a general economy of gender. We emphasize the apparently paradoxical role that dualisms — especially dualisms understood semiotically — have played in the foundational work to which many theorists look for clues about how to proceed in confounding limits and boundaries. Moreover, closures around the interrelated subordination of femininity and blackness emerge as a crucial reminder of the interlocking projects of gender and race theory. Drawing upon gender and critical race theory, philosophical phenomenology, and the work of Georges Bataille, we suggest that a general economy of gender can be explored by perceiving the closures, and other limits, enacted by dualism in organizational settings.

Risk Assessment Criteria for Radioactive Waste Disposal

The assessment of radioactive waste disposal options in terms of the annual risk to the critical group can lead to ambiguities, which arise largely in defining what is meant by the critical group. Radically different risk estimates can be obtained, depending on whether statistical averaging is carried out before or after the critical group is located in the time dimension. The merits of two different approaches are discussed through simple thought experiments and mathematical models. A criterion based on lifetime risk to the critical group is suggested, which could be used to supplement the currently accepted annual risk Emits. The risks from both stochastic and nonstochastic radiation effects are taken into account.

Interethnic Relationships: The Role of Social Network Diversity

We examine the degree to which ethnic diversity in social networks relates to the frequency of interethnic romantic relationships for 318 college students. In a multinomial logit, we find that the odds of having an interethnic relationship once or twice, versus never, increase significantly if the respondent has a relatively ethnically diverse friendship network, is male, and supports interethnic dating. The odds of having an interethnic relationship often, versus once or twice, are significantly higher for persons of color and when the friends of the respondent's parents are relatively diverse ethnically. Findings from open‐ended data also provide support for a social network perspective, and point to the processes by which networks, gender, and ethnicity shape interethnic courtship.
