This study examines the relationship between faculty racial/ethnic diversity and graduation rates of undergraduate students, in particular those from underrepresented racial and ethnic minority populations. Using IPEDS data, the researchers calculated a Diversity Score for each institution. Findings suggest U.S. faculty diversity is lower than in the U.S. national population. Overall graduation rates for underrepresented minority students of all races/ethnicities are positively affected by increased diversity of their faculty.  相似文献

人类学的时间研究虽然已逾百年,但直至20世纪末才开始系统地探讨全球化下的时间特点。美国人类学家凯文?伯斯(Kevin Birth)是相关领域的重要推动者之一。近30余年来,他从地方社区的多样时间互动及其社会建构、计时方式的认知塑造及其具身后果、现代时间的霸权及其时间多样性遮蔽等层面,深入考察了全球化下多样时间的互动和全球通用现代西式时间的局限。本文依托时间人类学的基本脉络,梳理了集中体现伯斯成就的三部代表作,并认为,理解伯斯著作中多维综合、情境性、实践取向的时间论,重视地方经验和跨学科的时间研究路径,以及多样性与同一性交织的全球时间景观,对后续研究推进具有重要意义。  相似文献

This paper aims at advancing the conceptualization of leisure as a contributor to quality of life (QOL) in an international and multicultural context, based on an extensive and critical review of literature on leisure and QOL from a global, international perspective. Given the central role of culture in conceptualizing this notion, this paper gives attention to various cultural contexts world-wide. To illustrate the diversity of our societies, examples are introduced specifically from three culturally unique contexts in this paper – i.e., Asian, Middle-East, and Indigenous contexts. Also, some examples are drawn from other cultural groups in global and international contexts, particularly, in non-western contexts. Then, the final section of this paper aims at integrating and synthesizing the knowledge gained from this review to develop a tentative/working proposition about how leisure can contribute to QOL from international and cross-cultural perspectives. Specifically, based on such integration, this paper identifies and describes major pathways linking leisure to QOL. Overall, an overarching theme common to almost all cultural contexts examined appears to be the role of leisure-like activities as a context or space for creating meanings which then help to promote the quality of people’s lives. Major pathways or mechanisms that can facilitate meaning-making and life-quality-enhancement highlighted in this review include: (a) positive emotions and well-being experienced from leisure, (b) positive identities and self-esteem gained from leisure, (c) social and cultural connections and a harmony developed through leisure, and (d) leisure’s contribution to learning and human development across the life-span. Also, emphasized in this paper is the role of leisure as a context for realizing and utilizing human strengths and resilience. It is important, however, to stress that in people’s quest for a meaningful life, the benefits of meaning-making through leisure involve both “remedying the bad” and “enhancing the good,” as shown throughout this paper. Despite these benefits, we should not ignore that leisure experiences are socially and culturally constructed and shaped by the inequalities of society. Thus, the reality of power imbalance and inequalities should be acknowledged and appropriately addressed socially, culturally, and politically. Particularly, providing culturally relevant and meaningful leisure opportunities for less privileged population groups world-wide is clearly a top priority.  相似文献

Using case study evidence of a local authority and a building society this article explores the gendered implications of corporate value change programmes and how these are mediated by the types of equality agendas in place at the organizational level. The article explores the gendered impact of new corporate values by identifying how the organizations' changing approach to selection and career development has unintended gendered consequences, affecting different groups in the organization depending on the specific department they are working in and their seniority. As the two organizations follow different equality agendas the data allow us to show the ways in which specific approaches to equality in organizations both shape and are shaped by corporate value change programmes. It is argued that corporate value change programmes have uneven gendered implications, depending on the specific context in which they are introduced and in particular, the ways in which managers and employees make sense of these by both rejecting and reinforcing existing equality agendas already in place.  相似文献

中华民族多元一体格局理论是中国民族学的基本理论之一。随着时代的不断变化以及学科发展的需要,学术界应该进一步扩展该理论的适用范围,并将其划分为三个层面。狭义层面的中华民族多元一体格局理论适用于中国大陆56个民族之间,中间层面适用于大陆与港、澳、台同胞之间,广义层面适用于中国与海外华人之间。三个层面的划分建立在已有研究成果基础之上,始终围绕民族认同这个核心论题展开,是对中华民族多元一体格局理论的重新梳理和进一步发展。  相似文献

人类历史的发展是一种全面的多级的发展,由于人类历史发展的这种多级关系并未引起广泛的关注,人们在探究思想解放和政治解放之间的关系等类似的问题时常常存在着是唯物主义还是唯心主义的哲学纷争。从实践唯物主义思维视角来看这种哲学纷争,根本分歧在于对历史动力的不同理解。在实践唯物主义看来,历史是"完整的人"的历史,历史因而表现为全面的历史,即不仅表现为人的实践活动史,同时也表现为思想史,人类历史发展固有的多级发展也表现为全面的多级发展,而且是不同历史因素相互交织的多级发展。站在全部人类历史的高度看,人类历史发展是由物质生产推动的,而站在部分人类历史发展的高度或从有限的逻辑推演看,人类历史发展的直接动因具有多样性。因此,现有的精神生产不仅直接作用于新一轮精神生产,而且对人类新一轮的物质生产、社会交往以及阶级斗争具有直接决定性。  相似文献

Despite holding significant roles in providing social servicesto First Nations or indigenous communities, social work hasbeen reluctant to accept indigenous perspectives and traditionalforms of helping and healing. Most often, social workers haveoperated within the dominant paradigms that, despite effortsto the contrary, have primarily imposed Western social workbeliefs and practices which have been unable to effectivelyaccommodate diversity. This paper argues that the recent attentionto the importance of the environment and spirituality, and theparadigmatic shift that such issues require, has created a welcomingspace for indigenous voices. Such acceptance has opened theopportunity for the profession to benefit not only from a genuineexchange among cultures, but also from a re-thinking of thefoundational beliefs of the social work profession.  相似文献
