The Place of Culture and Religion in Patterns of Disclosure and Reporting Sexual Abuse of Males: A Case Study of Ultra Orthodox Male Victims

ABSTRACT

This article deals with reporting patterns of sexual abuse in males in a religious-cultural context through a case study of ultra-Orthodox Jewish (Haredi) men who were young victims of sexual abuse. The study is based on in-depth interviews with 40 Haredi men. The results indicate that sexual abuse involving ultra-Orthodox boys was and is underreported. Moreover, the results indicate that even when such incidents were reported, the avenues for disclosure were parents, educational-religious figures, and friends. It was also found that silencing in matters related to sexuality, viewing sexual abuse in boys as a serious sin and taboo, and encouraging blind obedience—all of which characterize Haredi society—were factors in the underreporting. The results also show a strong tendency to cover up incidents of sexual abuse on an individual level, on a family level, and at the community level. The findings indicate a linkage between the religious and cultural background of male victims of sexual abuse and their reporting patterns.     

Internet Bibliotherapy

Abstract

Many individuals who use the Internet seek social support for health conditions. Some common “spaces” where asynchronous communication takes place include listservs (Usenet newsgroups or electronic mailing lists). Synchronous social support messages may be conveyed in “spaces” such as Internet Relay Chat or Multi-user domains. This research describes Internet bibliotherapy, a new type of “space” where social support is offered. This investigation reviews the therapeutic benefits of traditional bibliotherapy and the communication of social support. A narrative analysis of messages on a website devoted to helping people with anal fissures describes how social support is communicated using Internet bibliotherapy and the unique interactive and non-interactive properties of this type of reading simulated self help group.

从忌讳语的概念界定入手具体阐述日本礼仪中的"死亡"忌讳语,通过对部分"死亡"忌讳语的具体分析,阐明忌讳语本身及其功能等随时代的变化而变化,从而进一步阐明忌讳语受重视的程度及其存在形式随着时代的变迁、科学的发展等而逐渐淡薄,但仍将长期存在。通过探讨发掘隐藏于忌讳语背后的日本社会文化现象,把握日本民族心理,促进跨文化交际的顺利进行。     

亲疏关系的禁忌语表示及其相关翻译

亲疏关系在许多语言中都是通过“你和您”,类似法语中的“tu—vous（T／V）”来表现;亲疏关系还可以通过禁忌语来表现,使用禁忌语来进行“友好的羞辱”,表达“我们是一伙的”,这在英语国家文化和中国文化中都非常普遍。对于这种文化现象,文学翻译要使用异化的策略,而交际翻译,例如商务翻译和旅游翻译,就要使用归化的方法,以避免文化冲突。
