Recently the National Commission on Higher Education Issues found serious problems with college-level teaching and recomended educational reforms. This paper describes one attempt at reform—namely, a course at Georgia State University on university teaching for College of Business doctoral students. The 45-hour seminar, based on a university teaching model, covers setting instructional objectives, lecture and discussion methods, teaching methods for higher-level learning, test construction, course evaluation instruments, and instructional and technological innovations. Previous studies have demonstrated repeatedly that teaching improvement seminars can improve teacher and student performance in the classroom. This paper discusses how the seminar could be implemented at other colleges of business administration, extended to faculty development workshops, and ultimately result in a master teacher or instructional professorship. 相似文献

This paper explores the impacts of proposed school closures on families in rural communities in the South Taranaki region of New Zealand. We situate this instance of educational restructuring in a critical policy context and present an account of its regional unfolding through drawing on local media coverage. We then interpret narratives gathered during an interview-based study of the proposed changes undertaken in 2003–2004. Our analysis highlights the impact of school closure for rural settlements in terms of affect as well as effects. More generally we reflect on the place of schools in the experience of place itself, as well as their contribution to social cohesion and the broadly defined health of a community. 相似文献

In this paper we analyze the effect of inequality on school enrollment, preferred tax rate and expenditure per student in
developing countries; when parents can choose between child labor, public schooling or private schooling. We present a model
in which parents make schooling decisions for their children, weighing the utility benefit of having a child with formal public
or private education versus the forgone income from child labor or household work. Parents vote over the preferred tax rate
to finance freely provided public education. The utility benefit of an educated child is proportional to expenditure per student,
so that there is congestion in public school. We find that when parents can send their children to work or to private school,
high inequality leads to exit from public education at both ends of the income distribution. Thus high inequality reduces
the support for public education, leading to a low tax rate and expenditure per student. Exit from public education results
in both high child labor and a large fraction of students attending private school. In fact there is a threshold level of
inequality above which there is no longer support for public education. In addition we explore the implications for the design
of foreign aid. The results suggest that foreign aid policies should focus on promoting school attendance rather than increasing
school resources, as the later policy might be offset by a reduction in the recipient country’s fiscal effort, with little
impact on outcomes.

Within developing economies, in particular, but also in underdeveloped economies, current business priorities and practices
have appeared to be incongruent with the general discourse of environmental sustainability. It is clear that the different
players within the economic framework: government, education system, producers, and consumers—appear to hold differing interests,
none of which places any meaningful emphasis on environmental sustainability. Following this observation, this paper seeks
to argue for a change of tactics within which current players are treated as stakeholders and co-opted into a new business
model that is fundamentally sensitive to the promotion and development of environmental sustainability. This approach is intended
to interconnect the key market players’ interests and systematically weave them into a modern environmentally sustainable
compliant business ethos.

This study estimates the contributions of skill-biased technological change and international trade to the rise in the skill
premium during the 1980s and 90s using the Feenstra and Hanson (Q J Econ 114(3):907–940, 1999) two-stage methodology. Newly available data on high-technology capital provide separate measures of computer and software
investment. New estimates suggest that investment in software contributed to a substantial portion of the observed increase
in the skill premium while investment in computers lead to a reduction in the rate of skill premium growth. Contrary to the
findings of Feenstra and Hanson for the 1980s, neither software nor computers had a significant effect on wages during the
1980s. Foreign outsourcing does not appear to have significantly affected wages during the 1990s. The contribution to theory
is that software is more complementary to increases in worker productivity due to human skills. Computers, on the other hand,
reduced the growth of wage inequality by giving unskilled labor a more efficient set of tools with which to work.

This article analyzes the determinants of young men and women’s entry into parenthood, applying hazard regressions to a combination
of longitudinal micro-data from the 1992/1993 Swedish Family Survey and aggregate time-series data. We study the impact of education, labor market attachment and macro-economic change on becoming
a parent for both men and women in Sweden since the mid-1960s. Our results show clear gender differences both when it comes
to individual characteristics and aggregate-level factors. Even though the effects sometimes differed according to gender,
education and labor market attachment were key factors determining the transition to parenthood. Over time the pattern grew
increasingly similar for men and women. 相似文献
