Using complexity theory in kinship practice

This reflective discussion draws on data from a collaborative enquiry into kinship or family and friends practice. It introduces perspectives from complexity and chaos theory as a way of re‐examining the challenges of kinship practice. The discussion highlights the enduring challenges for practitioners, not least, managing anxiety and uncertainty, sustaining continuity and containment, becoming experienced and taking account of the complex developmental needs of the children and their families. The discussion particularly raises questions about appropriate settings for practitioners to undertake such a demanding area of child and family social work.

The source of Black-White inequality in early language acquisition: Evidence from Early Head Start

I compare language learning trajectories for Black and White children over the first 3 years of life using data from the Early Head Start Research and Evaluation study (EHSRE) in order to determine the timing and source of divergence in early language skill. Results indicate that that while controlling for racial differences in family background and a measure of the home language environment cannot entirely account for disparities in language acquisition, interactions between age, race and maternal education, and between race and a time-varying measure of the home language environment play a significant role. I show that returns to parental education and the home language environment, in terms of language learning, are higher for White children than their Black peers. Specification checks confirm that these results are robust to alternate definitions of child language and the home language environment, and that no interactions between race, age and any of the other covariates are significant. I discuss possible explanations for these race specific education gradients, including measurement error and test bias. In addition, I address relevant empirical issues in estimating language growth with respect to linguistic inputs and the home language environment.

《鲁迅〈故乡〉阅读史》一书,是藤井省三从事鲁迅研究二十年来的总结之作。本书从鲁迅的短篇小说《故乡》入手,以文学社会学方法透视现代中国知识群体的阅读情况,考察＂想象的共同体＂如何发挥民族国家建构的作用。其＂小题大做,旁敲侧击＂,力图呈现的可谓是＂文学的社会史＂。从《鲁迅〈故乡〉阅读史》的脉络转到村上春树的中国阅读史研究,藤井为自己的研究对象构筑了开阔的时空关系,看似天马行空的论述背后,其一以贯之的文化体认也蕴蓄其中。     

近代巴蜀诗人李士棻生卒年及别号考略

近代巴蜀诗人李士棻曾被曾国藩誉为“太白醉魂”,为曾府门下“四川三李”之一,其诗作有浓郁的巴蜀文化特色。然李氏仕宦不显,长期以来学界对其关注不足,学界近年不多的相关研究,多围绕国内所存的文献,对其诗歌创作进行艺术分析,对诗人的生平介绍多简单略过,没有严谨的考证,目前仍然很有争议。通过搜罗国内外现存典籍,综合目前所见李士棻本人著述,辅以晚清近代重要报刊《申报》和与李氏有交往的朝鲜文人文献,考证其生卒年及别号,冀为今后的相关研究解决基础问题。     

临水夫人的造神背景与传播特色

临水夫人是福建省第二大民间信仰女神，她堪称与妈祖齐名的闽地内陆女神，其信仰产生具有鲜明的闽地历史背景，造神与传播过程也独有特色。     

<史记>"孔子生年"索源

自异载孔子生年之《史记》问世,二千余年孔诞之争不决;然,《史记》“鲁襄公二十二年”者,何所据源,诚当考辨析明之。考《世本》载记孔子生年说,纯系子虚乌有。至今所见文献,可为《史记》“孔子生年”载记之源者,惟公、谷二传《春秋》耳;不过司马迁之误解《春秋》历纪,乃助后世曲纪孔子生辰千有余年矣．     

Uncertainty and the Second Space: Modern Birth Timing and the Dilemma of Education

This paper focuses on the relationship between experiential and statistical uncertainties in the timing of births in Cameroon (Central Africa). Most theories of fertility level and change emphasize the emergence of parity-specific control, treating desired family size as both central, and stable across the life course. By contrast, this paper argues for a theory of reproduction that emphasizes process, social context, and contingency. The paper concentrates on the second birth interval, showing that it is longer and more variable among educated than among uneducated women. The paper argues that this difference is due to the specific forms of uncertainty associated with education in contemporary Cameroon.     

教育回归生命本原--对生育文化及其所承载教育价值的思考

在传统教育体系中,生育文化与教育的关联历来不被人重视,生育文化常常被认为是与教育相关不大或毫无相关的领域,从教育的视角对生育文化问题的关注较少.但是在儿童个体生命成长过程中,生育文化的影响和重要的教育价值是不容忽视的.研究和探讨教育人类学视野中的生育文化及其研究价值,希望能够对关注教育、关注文化的教育价值、关注除学校以外更大教育空间的人们提供一个看待教育的新的视角,从而对教育发展有一定启示.     

石公弼生卒年小考

石公弼在北宋大观年间官任御史中丞,连上章弹劾权奸蔡京,终使蔡京罢相出居杭州.后蔡京再相,罗致 其罪,谪居台州.其生平事迹载<宋史>和<东都事略>,然两书皆不载其生卒年.根据发现的新资料,确切地考证出石公弼生于宋仁宗嘉祐六年(1061),卒于宋徽宗政和五年(1115),享年55岁.
