Ethnohistorical Construction of Identity: The Lviv Paradigm

The Italian populist movement Lega Nord once famously claimed that the north of Italy was a nation (‘Padania’) that should be granted independence. Padania was posited by the party through a combination of outrageous anti-Italian statements, gatherings in places of historic and symbolic significance and through the selective appropriation of the past. This article takes this new ‘nation’ as a case study through which to further our understanding of the discursive strategies of nationalist movements, as they reinvent and rewrite history and redefine identities. It argues that some within the Lega, far from simply adopting a covert strategy of reinvention of the past (like many of their fellow nationalists do), openly advocated such strategy as a means of ‘liberation’. Moreover, the analysis highlights crucial contradictions between: the reality of strong, heterogeneous local identities in northern Italy and the effort of creating a new unitary community in the area; the needs of a hyper-modern economy and the longing for a mythic past; and, finally, a dubious rediscovered paganism and rooted Catholic traditions. The article argues that the lack of territorial and symbolic coherence in northern Italy was a crucial factor in making the Lega's attempts at re-invention less than compelling.     

Dial 'M' for Metonym: Universal Exports,M's Office Space and Empire

For James Bond, Britishness is most often realised outside the British Isles, within the old Empire. Whenever physically located in Britain proper, he is most likely to be found in the offices of Universal Exports otherwise known as the British Secret Service. M's office is a metonym for England, a stable point of departure for Bond's adventures, and a site from which to theorise the relationship between M (England) and Bond (Britain); ideology, iconography and office fittings; changes and challenges to that 'office space'; cognitive mapping and the resonance of a British signifier on the margins of empire.     

Discourses of Identity at the Spanish/Portuguese Border: Self-Identification Strategies of Centre and Periphery

This article examines the self-identification strategies that officials of two border towns use to characterise their respective localities. These strategies are considered relative to four theoretical paradigms used to analyse identity: centre-periphery, regionalist, essentialist and non-essentialist. Clear differences are revealed between the two towns, despite their similar geographical location at the periphery, general demographic features and shared history. In one case, the evidence suggests that the identity is centred locally and affirmed through daily behaviour or 'practices', while in the other, that the identity focus is regional and essentialist in nature.

大学生的角色认同状况研究——以钱江学院为例

角色认同是个人对自己身份的知觉和体验过程,大学生的角色认同既是个体心理问题,也是社会问题。本研究采用问卷调查法对468名大学生进行调查,主要探讨大学生的角色认同状况及其影响因素,研究的结果表明：大学生的角色认同的总体状况较为积极;性别、政治面貌、年级、是否独生子女等因素对大学生的角色认同的影响呈现不同程度的显著差异。     

“言文一致”与中国文学观念的现代转型——对“言文一致”命题的重新审视

“言文一致”是晚清和“五四”两代知识分子共同关心的文化命题,但他们也显示出内在的差异与分歧。文学启蒙是“言文一致”的历史动因,前者借此表达的是民族国家意识,但后者更注重个性意识的释放;对汉语的全面反恩是“言文一致”的现实起点。前者还是在旧有的规范中创作,后者却创立了现代白话;“文学”观念的革新是“言文一致”的实际成果。前者推进了文学观念的转型,但后者才经由现代汉语建立起现代思想文化。     

《觉醒》中女性身份重构

肖邦的《觉醒》揭示了美国妇女在十九世纪末和二十世纪初重构自身社会身份的努力和抗挣。本文探讨了社会对妇女的束缚和爱德娜渴望自由之间的强烈碰撞,由于缺乏明晰而有效的抗挣方法,她自我实现的努力注定要失败;《觉醒》提出了令人深思的问题：女性追求自由,但自由又不可承受。这正是该作品的社会学价值之一。     

城市社区认同感的培育——对南通市崇川区学田街道的调查分析

城市社区为满足社区居民的需求而建立,凝结着社区居民各方面的利益。居民本应具有较强的社区认同感,然而当前城市社区认同感的缺失却日益严重。通过对南通市崇川区学田街道的实证调查,本文认为培育城市社区认同感,既要加强城市社区文化建设,主要包括社区服务文化建设和社区管理文化建设;同时需要鼓励、支持和动员居民参加社区建设。     

复兴大业中的“中华民族”:从自发到自觉

对"中国"、"民族"、"中华"以及"华夏"等概念的梳理可以看出,中华民族的形成在历史上经历了一个漫长的、多民族融合的、自发的过程。近代以后,在外来压力之下,又经历了一段自觉的过程。借鉴前苏联、美国的民族政策,"中国梦"要想实现,必须寻找共同价值指引,强大内在力量,即实现"中华民族"作为一个"国族"的自觉认同。
