Model,Event, Context: Globalization,Arab Social Movements,and the Modeling of Global Order

In this article I scrutinize a particular discursive strategy that attempts to straightjacket the new social movements in the Arab uprisings. Rather than being open to new forms of polities and alternative modes of economic and social organization, an emerging governmental and scholarly discourse calls for a model of development for the Arab world. I argue that this model limits political imagination; and that it is the effect of a late modern logic that seeks to impose a particular form of politics in global political life. In, and through, the language of an archetype, these social movements, and the emerging polities, are being tamed to inherit the tensions and fragilities of a certain form of political and economic globalization.

En este artículo examino detalladamente una estrategia particularmente divagadora, que trata de restringir los nuevos movimientos sociales en los levantamientos árabes. En vez de abrirse a nuevos sistemas de gobierno y medios alternativos de organización económica y social, un planteamiento de gobierno emergente y académico exige un modelo de desarrollo para el mundo árabe. Sostengo que este modelo limita la imaginación política y que es el efecto de una lógica moderna tardía que busca imponerse a una forma particular de política en la vida política global. Estos movimientos sociales y los sistemas de gobierno nacientes dentro y a través del lenguaje de un arquetipo, se han domado para heredar las tensiones y fragilidades de cierta forma de globalización política y económica.

本文中,我详细审视了一种特定的话语策略,它试图严格限定阿拉伯起义中的新社会运动。 一套新近兴起的政府和学术话语呼吁阿拉伯世界的发展模式,而非对新形式的政体及替代性经济和社会组织模式开放。我认为,这种模式限定了政治想象力,它是试图在全球政治生活中强加一种特定政治形式的晚期现代逻辑作用的结果。在原始类型的语言中,或通过这种语言,这些社会运动及新兴政体正被驯服,以继承某种形式的政治和经济全球化的紧张与脆弱。     

A letter from the empty stage

This paper is about discipline at work. From a distal perspective, discipline may be understood in terms of an achievement, an effect, an outcome, a social phenomenon already constituted. In contrast, a proximal perspective suggests that discipline is a social process constantly working its way through organizational practices, on its way to be constituted but not quite yet finalized. The paper documents the outcomes and the workings of discipline in LOGICOM, a UK service organization which has embarked recently on a total customer satisfaction (TCS) program. In so doing, it argues that the outcome of disciplinary power is the organizational self. In LOGICOM, employees appear to identify, innovate, comply, be resilient, or rebel against the goal of TCS and the institutionalized means for achieving it. The workings of discipline are then explored via the technologies of domination and technologies of the self that characterize TCS. It is concluded that the workings of such disciplinary mechanisms are not entirely effective and, consequently, the outcomes of discipline are difficult to predict or know from beforehand. Thus, the “disciplined employee” is a fictitious category, something that the organization may strive for, but can never realize.

Translating Bourdieu: cultural capital and the English middle class in historical perspective

This article examines the ways in which Pierre Bourdieu's work on culture and cultural capital can be applied to the study of the English middle class in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Drawing on a wide historical literature, the article argues for the significance of culture as a constitutive element of middle-class identities in England since 1800. It goes on to examine Bourdieu's ideas of 'objectivated', 'instutionalized' and 'incorporated' cultural capital, in the context of family, inheritance, education and the body. The article identifies changes in the historical forms which cultural capital has taken and emphasizes the importance of analysing family processes of intergenerational transmission.

中东现代化进程中,现代与传统间产生矛盾的重要原因在于民族主义和伊斯兰教两种意识形态的复杂关系.鉴于此,本文主要从中东民族主义对伊斯兰教的冲击、伊斯兰原教旨主义对民族主义挑战的回应、民族主义与伊斯兰教的矛盾对中东政治发展的影响及其前景等三个方面分析了二者间的复杂关系.

普京时代世界形势总体对俄罗斯有利,俄经济发展迅速,国力稳步上升,外交日趋活跃和强硬.在此大背景下,俄中东政策随之调整,更具主动性和独立性.俄在中东问题上发挥积极和独特的作用,提升了俄在该地区的政治地位,扩大了影响.同时,也增加了俄在该地区调动与美国等大国关系的外交资源.后普京时代,俄将继续其意在恢复大国地位的外交政策,与之相适应的是,俄将继续在中东奉行自主独立、与欧美保持一定距离的外交政策.总体上,在与美维持既竞争又合作的关系格局的基础上,俄将与其他大国一起共同参与中东事务,逐步形成多极合作的局面.     

整体考察美国的中东政策(上)

无论在冷战时期还是后冷战时代,中东地区因其拥有丰富的能源和特殊的地缘政治地位而成为美国全球战略中的重要部分.依照美国中东政策的源起、美在中东的利益、冷战和后冷战时期的美中东政策等历史线索和逻辑关系,本文对美国中东政策进行了系统梳理与整体考察,构建了"分析美国中东政策的框架".其中,作者多年前提出的"考察美国中东政策的坐标"在实证研究中是可行且有效的.冷战后,中东成为美国全球战略重点"两洋战略"的"连接点"和"支撑点",具有"不可替代性",从而与"两洋战略"遥相呼应,构成强有力的"哑铃态势",加强了"两洋战略".此外,美国发动了海湾战争、阿富汗战争和伊拉克战争等三场有重大影响的战争,进一步说明中东地区对美来说不仅有着无法割舍的利益需求,而且还是实现其战略目标的重要舞台.
