Is Managed Mental Health Treatment Psychotherapy?

The corporate takeover of mental health treatment has dramatically affected mental health treatment. Two essential constituents of psychotherapeutic process, the relationship between patient and therapist and the special communicative process associated with a talking treatment, have been significantly compromised. Therapists and patients are being forced to consider whether in the absence of confidentiality, self determination, and a secure treatment partnership managed mental health care can be called psychotherapy. Drawing on several detailed sessions from the managed treatment of a young woman, the writer concludes that the answer is no.

Integrating Dream Analysis with Intersubjectivity in Group Psychotherapy

The author discusses her application of Daniel Stern's theories of intersubjectivity to group psychotherapy. The group members were women presenting with issues regarding childhood molestation and/or abuse. From her case notes, she examines the dreams the women discussed in the group treatment setting and illustrates how the group members mutually constructed life narratives, which ultimately created new meanings regarding their lives. Through mutual construction of these narratives, her clients ultimately organized new senses of self, affecting them both interpersonally and intrapsychically.

Containing Violence: A Case Study Illustration of Bion's Container-Contained Model as Applied to Mother–Infant Intervention

Secure Beginnings is a program of psychotherapy for pregnant women with potential problems in the formation of the parent–child relationship including, in the extreme, infant maltreatment. The core of the therapeutic process is to help the mother recognize and think through unbearable thoughts and feelings rather than project expectations of abandonment, hate, helplessness or ridicule into her infant. Case material, from 18 months of treatment, is used to illustrate the Secure Beginnings approach. The case is a mother with psychosis and addiction who lost nine previous children to foster care.

The intrusion of these devices in sessions and their presence in the patients lives is explored.     

Therapeutic Forgiveness: Developing a Model for Empowering Victims of Sexual Abuse

Forgiveness is increasingly popular in therapy as a way to facilitate healing, but there are definitional discrepancies and confusion regarding the degree to which it is conceptualized as either an interpersonal/relational or an independent/self-enhancing process. In this article forgiveness is conceptualized as an interpersonal process linked to apology or contrition on the part of the offender. Yet it is also independent. A model is described that was developed for the benefit of abuse victims whose offenders will not or cannot apologize. Using the model, victims can accomplish for themselves what would be accomplished for them through an apology.
