On Our Memory of Gay Sullivan: A Hidden Trajectory

ABSTRACT

This article examines psychiatrist Harry Stack Sullivan's approach to the issue of homosexuality. Sullivan (1892–1949), well-known for his interpersonal theory of mental illness, is believed to have accomplished a high recovery rate in his treatment of schizophrenia during the 1920s. Most of his patients, as well as Sullivan himself, were concerned about their “homosexual” orientations. He encouraged physical affection between male patients and male attendants, believing that it would free patients from their guilt for their “unconventional” sexuality. But he kept his compelling practice hidden, not bringing it into open discussion to confront the definition of homosexuality as “sickness.” This article traces the process in which the omission of the important aspect of Sullivan's practice began during his lifetime and continued in the scholarship since. In so doing, the article suggests a nuanced understanding of this important figure in the U.S. intellectual and cultural history of homosexuality.     

On sequential estimation of the mean of a multidimensional gaussian process

For a multidimensional continuous time GAUssian process whose mean vector depends linearly of a multidimensional parameter, we consider a sequential estimation niodel. A suitable estimator process is constructed, and its distributions are analyzed in order to prove that it is progressively sufficient, After the reduction by sufficiency, an invariant structure is introduced and the optimal invariant terminal decision function is obtained.

Introduction: Leading Lesbians Fight Disease and Disability

This thematic issue of the Journal of Lesbian Studies focuses on the ways in which lesbian leaders have dealt with disease and disability. In the articles that follow, eight prominent lesbians describe what it means to cope with serious illness and medical treatment in the context of lesbian identity and community. This introduction provides an overview of some of the themes that arose in the various articles, focusing on lesbian support systems as well as best medical practices.     

Walking a Tightrope: Case Management Services and Outpatient Commitment

Effective case managers in community mental health are successful at forging a working alliance with recipients. This article explores one key aspect of case management practice, serving involuntary clients, specifically those on outpatient commitment orders. In 19 intensive interviews, a subset of a larger study, case managers shared their perceptions of the utility of outpatient commitment with a focus on how such orders impacted the professional relationship. We argue that the use of advance psychiatric directives and shared decision-making processes can reduce the need for coercive practice.     

Illness and Autobiographical Work: Dialogue as Narrative Destabilization

Illness is an occasion for autobiography, and memoirs of illness present openings to ethical ways of living. This work describes illness memoirs as performative, creating the self they claim as their origin. The self that is claimed is dialogical, and the tension of this dialogue is to include the voices of others without assimilating these voices to one's own. Physician memoirs, a spiritual autobiography, and a web site are presented as examples of dialogical autobiographical work occasioned by illness.     

Using geocoded survey data to improve the accuracy of multilevel small area synthetic estimates

This paper examines the secondary data requirements for multilevel small area synthetic estimation (ML-SASE). This research method uses secondary survey data sets as source data for statistical models. The parameters of these models are used to generate data for small areas. The paper assesses the impact of knowing the geographical location of survey respondents on the accuracy of estimates, moving beyond debating the generic merits of geocoded social survey datasets to examine quantitatively the hypothesis that knowing the approximate location of respondents can improve the accuracy of the resultant estimates. Four sets of synthetic estimates are generated to predict expected levels of limiting long term illnesses using different levels of knowledge about respondent location. The estimates were compared to comprehensive census data on limiting long term illness (LLTI). Estimates based on fully geocoded data were more accurate than estimates based on data that did not include geocodes.     

When should there be liability for negligently causing psychiatric illness?

In March 1998 the Law Commission for England and Wales published the outcome of its review of the law on compensation of those who suffer psychiatric illness as a result of the negligence of another person. The report is largely, although not solely, concerned with work-related illness. It also reviews the literature on the incidenc and forms of psychiatric illness. It makes recommendations for legislation. This paper critically summarizes the findings of the Commission and concludes with some comments. It questions the appropriateness of common law litigation for these kinds of injury. It also comments on whether the Commission's recommendations will be implemented by Parliament and the likely impact of the proposed revision of the law upon the incidence of litigation.     

Rethinking Parental Coping with Child Health: A Proposed Theoretical Model

Much of the stress and coping literature is shaped by Hill’s ABC-X model, however, parents who are learning to cope with various aspects of their child’s health may experience stressors that can be better explained by expanding the ABC-X model to incorporate specific needs of the family. To aid this expansion, the authors examine the specific context of children with chronic illnesses via a systematic review and propose a new theoretical model: the Model of Parental Coping with Child Health. The proposed model explores the integration of the biopsychosocial-spiritual model and ecological systems theory utilizing the scaffolding of the ABC-X model for the organization. Future research, implications, and recommendations are also discussed.     

Women and homelessness,a complex multidimensional issue: findings from a scoping review

Homelessness is an increasingly prevalent issue worldwide. Women represent the fastest growing segment of the homeless population and have differing needs to men. These differences need to be considered by service providers and other stakeholders working with homeless women. A scoping review was conducted to address the question “What is known about issues relating to homeless women in the existing literature?” PubMed, PsycInfo, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus and Web of Science were searched up until March 2018 with no date limits. The final sample of articles included in this scoping study was 232 from which six themes were extracted: (1) pathways into homelessness, (2) trauma, victimization and adverse childhood experiences, (3) mental and physical health issues, (4) barriers to accessing treatment and experiences with service providers, (5) social support and life satisfaction and (6) strengths, hopes and leaving homelessness. This review suggests a strengths-based approach to addressing women’s homelessness. This approach emphasizes people’s self-determination and strengths and views clients as resilient to problems they encounter in their lives. Future research and service provision should take into account the complexities in the lives of homeless women and recognize the autonomy of women to move out of homelessness.
