This article explores the complex, liminal, and difficult space in which stories of women in “the Arab Spring” were wielded as parts of political narratives of gender, race, class, religion, democracy, and Westernization in Western media as the Arab Spring unfolded. It examines those stories by using the tools of postcolonial feminism. After briefly describing what is meant by (gender and) the Arab Spring, the article outlines a method for evaluating the significations of the media narratives surrounding it. We find two dissonant narratives (of gender as emancipatory and of gender as problematic) and ask what assumptions about gender (and sex and race and culture) have to be made to produce these particular representations. We argue that the dissonant narratives have in common using the situation of women as a barometer for the success of Westernization, liberalization, and democratization. The article concludes by exploring the implications of these findings. 相似文献

Globalization involves risks and opportunities for the Arab world. Realistic knowledge of these possibilities is essential
for adaptation of governance and reform of public administration to deal more effectively with the unfolding processes of
globalization. To be participants rather than mere subjects, the Arab states have to recognize opportunities and limit potential
negative consequences. Success requires good governance and professional public management. Public administration in the Arab
world has to transform traditional methods of command and control and nepotism into a more collaborative management that relies

Few studies have explored the professional training experiences of Arab women within the contexts of learning organisational cultures and relevant human resource development (HRD) practices. Capitalising on in-depth, face-to-face interviews, this study explores the experiences of women managers in Lebanon with professional training and organisational learning. The findings demonstrate the paucity of professional training and learning opportunities for women and illustrate how organisational discrimination and gender-biased cultures and tension influence women’s learning. To overcome these barriers and alleviate organisational tension, the Lebanese women managers capitalise on their agency and individual capacities to improve their training experiences and increase their access to learning opportunities. By virtue of individual agency and through their agentic process, the careerists shape their training and overall learning by being adaptive and developing structures of action that enable them to advance their learning. The results have important implications for HR managers and HRD scholars. They also extend our understanding of the importance, or lack thereof, of the learning culture within an organisation. 相似文献

Background
Women’s mental health in the perinatal period is understudied worldwide and in Arab countries especially.Aim
This systematic review explores evidence of the association between women’s social resources for empowerment in the Arab World and their mental health in the prenatal and postnatal (≤1 year postpartum) periods.Methods
Guided by Kabeer’s framework of empowerment, the authors applied a search string in PubMed and Web of Science databases to identify studies in countries of the Arab League (hereafter the Arab World) that address mental health and social resources for women’s empowerment in the perinatal period.Findings
Of 1865 electronically retrieved articles, 23 met the inclusion criteria. Overall, the majority of studies found a positive association between social resources for empowerment and perinatal mental health. Seven studies explored the relationship between familial or general social support and prenatal mental health in Arab women, and found a significant positive association. Sixteen of the 18 studies of women in the postnatal period found that enabling familial, extra-familial, and/or general social support was positively associated with mental health.Conclusion
This review demonstrates an association between social resources and perinatal mental health, but there is a dearth of research in this area. We call for additional research on Arab women in the perinatal period using context-specific but standardized tools to assess social resources and mental health. 阿拉伯人的多样性是其内部利益差别的重要原因之一。其多样性主要表现在三方面:(1)方言林立。阿拉伯语是阿拉伯人的通用语言,但在不同阿拉伯国家,甚至在同一国之内有多种方言。(2)种族成份迥异。虽同属一个民族,但各国阿拉伯人在形成过程中融合的其他民族成份不一。(3)宗教信仰复杂。大多数阿拉伯人信仰伊斯兰教,少数信奉基督教,阿拉伯人教派繁杂。阿拉伯人多样性的形成,与阿拉伯民族在发育过程中的不健全、异族的频繁入侵以及各异的自然地理条件有关。 相似文献
