Adventures in policy modeling! Operations research in the community and beyond

The literature describing operations research in the community is somewhat of a puzzle. On the one hand, several authors have denigrated the use of traditional operations approaches in addressing community problems, yet several studies document successful applications. Arguing that the operations research mindset is itself a great strength, we will review several examples where operations research methods have been employed creatively to the benefit of the community and beyond.     

论国际法渊源的范畴

长期以来,国际法的渊源问题在学界难以得到一致解释,但是相当一部分学者将国际法的渊源理解为国际法的表现形式。以这种理解作为前提,《国际法院规约》第38条只是国际法院的裁判依据,而非对国际法渊源的说明,但它又的确为探究国际法渊源的范畴提供了一条线索。在对第38条所罗列的裁判依据和其他类别国际资料进行逐个分析和评论之后,现阶段,国际法渊源的范畴应当是国际习惯和国际条约,且两者之间不存在等级关系。     

旧领域与新视野:从风俗论看明清社会史研究

资本主义萌芽问题讨论带动了明清社会风俗的研究,其中尤以16世纪以后社会风气的探讨充分,引出了一系列有关明清社会史的话题,20世纪80年代以后相关的研究成果层出不穷。明清风俗以及相关问题的研究可从如下六个方面把握,即作为方法的明清风俗论,以奢侈问题为中心的明清消费研究,全球化与明清风俗论,风俗特性与明清地域研究,职业观与明清风俗论,移风易俗与明清社会变迁。未来的研究,似应在使用新概念、挖掘新史料、处理跨世纪上用力。     

从"宋明"转向"明清"——就儒学与宗教的关系看明清思想的连续性

历来把明清思想断层看得过于严重并不妥当,事实上,清代士人在面对儒学与宗教的关系问题时,显然无法置身于宋明文化传统之外,若从明清两代宗教文化的角度看,则可发现明清思想存在着连续性。本文着重考察清儒对宗教典籍的阐释、宗教文化的信仰以及鬼怪故事的叙述,尝试对于后16世纪中国社会的思想、道德与文化之特质提出一种理解的新视角。笔者以为,通过这一尝试,或有可能将明清思想与宋明理学的研究视域衔接起来。     

十六大以来社会主义意识形态建设的基本经验

党的十六大以来,我国社会主义意识形态建设的基本经验就是夯实基础、苦练内功、重拳出击、全面凝练以增强社会主义意识形态的核心引导力。具体地讲就是:加强党自身建设以提高党对社会主义意识形态的领导力和感召力,坚持理论创新以增强社会主义意识形态的吸引力和感染力,筑牢舆论阵地以加固社会主义意识形态的支撑力和凝聚力,加强队伍建设以提高社会主义意识形态的战斗力,批判错误思潮以积聚社会主义意识形态的整合力,关注民生问题以增进社会主义意识形态的说服力,营造社会氛围以扩大社会主义意识形态的影响力,繁荣先进文化以提升社会主义意识形态的软实力。     

《慈悲道场忏法》成书考

《慈悲道场忏法》中的不少语段、词语用法等多见于梁武帝《东都发愿文》等文章,而且,书中又大量汲取了《净住子》的用语、内容与套子式行文。由此可推断：《慈悲道场忏法》应为梁武帝及其统治下的皇室成员及陈真观等人所撰或所改编。     

Banking and inequality: US state evidence

The question of how financial development affects economic inequality is a subject of much debate. This paper adds to this literature by examining whether banking deregulation affects income inequality using state-level data from the United States from the late 20th century. Specifically, we test the hypothesis that the deregulation of interstate branch-banking restrictions had an effect on income inequality as measured by the Gini Coefficient and Thiel Index. We conduct our tests using fixed-effects OLS models and System GMM dynamic panel analysis. Our results suggest that branching deregulation has resulted in increased income inequality in the United States.     

Impact of finance on growth: Does it vary with development levels or cyclical conditions?

Financial systems are complex and may support economic growth differently at various stages of economic development. This study of 90 countries extends the financial development-economic growth literature by using four proxies of financial development (banking, stock market, bond market and insurance), and considering a country’s level of economic development, on both a full and pre-global crisis sample. As expected financial markets have different effects on growth where the level of economic development vary. Policy makers should find that the insurance sector offers the most benefit for economic growth at all levels of development. Stock markets promote growth for middle income countries. Similarly bond markets promote growth with middle and high income countries. Some bond market and stock market results differed in the pre-crisis sample. Policies which promote trade but limit other areas such as inflation, government consumption and crises, should also support growth.
