Group Benefit and Protection of Pediatric Research Subjects: Grimes v. Kennedy Krieger and the Lead Abatement Study

The Maryland Court of Appeals in Grimes v. Kennedy Krieger Institute was sharply critical of the lead abatement study conducted by this Institute, an affiliate of Johns Hopkins University. Grimes ruled that investigators might, given the facts of the case, have a special relationship with subjects, thereby creating a duty of care that could, if breached, give rise to an action in negligence. This ruling has implications for pediatric research practices and long-standing disputes among informed people of good will about what pediatric studies should be permitted.     

Guest Editorial Production Planning and Control in other Industries

This paper provides an excursion into various scheduling problems arising in the manufacturing environment and possible approaches that can be taken to solve them. It reviews the research in production scheduling from the perspective of designing and operating a production system and examines the research strategies adopted to find the solution of the practical problems. This review is in the form of the paradigms that evolved during the twentieth century and shows the transition in theory and practice of each paradigm. It covers the fundamental frameworks of scheduling theory, outlining various approaches that can be taken to solve (optimally or approximately) such problems, and the difficulties arising in their practical use. Subsequently, an iterative scheduling process is suggested as an extension of existing paradigms to solve practical production scheduling problems and to bridge the gap between theory and practice in production scheduling and control.     

The effect of non-normality on estimating the variance of the combined ratio estimate in complex surveys

The performance of the balanced half-sample, jackknife and linearization methods for estimating the variance of the combined ratio estimate is studied by means of a computer simulation using artificially generated non-normally distributed populations.

The results of this investigation demonstrate that the variance estimates for the combined ratio estimate may be highly biased and unstable when the underlying distributions are non-normal. 青海卡力岗人研究综述

自从上个世纪80年代初以来,居住在青海省化隆回族自治县西南部的卡力岗山区的一部分说藏语安多方言,有部分藏族生活习俗的回族穆斯林,日益引起学术界的关注。二十多年来的卡力岗研究取得了一些令人瞩目的成绩,然而也存在着许多显而易见的不足。本文旨在对这二十多年来的研究成果做一个学术回顾,以求为今后的卡力岗研究逐渐走向深入做好准备。     

国内外研究《格萨尔》状况概述

《格萨尔》史诗虽然产生于青藏高原,但是它以独特的魅力,不仅冲出族属的省界,流传于大半个中国,而且早已跨越国境,在许多国家的文苑中竞相开放,为世界人民所喜爱。《格萨尔》研究究竟是从什么时候开始的,经历了怎样的过程?有人说国外对《格萨尔》的研究比国内早,而且成果颇丰,正如敦煌学在中国,而敦煌研究在国外一样。同样,《格萨尔》史诗在中国,而《格萨尔》研究在国外。其实不然,事实上,这部史诗以其“非凡的普及性”引起国外学者注意之前,早就受到了本族学者的热切关注。在国内,研究史诗的历史比国外早近200年,研究成果令人瞩目。
