Revisiting the relationship between public relations and marketing: Encroachment and social media

Although public relations and marketing trade presses regularly discuss the conflict between the functions (e.g., Ecker, 2013; Havartin, 2013), academic researchers focused on the issue primarily in the 1980s and 1990s. The drop in public relations and marketing encroachment research does not parallel a drop in encroachment in practice, especially in light of today’s social media environment. In fact, historic tension between public relations and marketing intensified with the incorporation of social media into communication efforts. This paper updates the study of encroachment by reviewing the historical views of the topic, proposes ways that social media use has intensified issues related to role encroachment between public relations and marketing professionals, and outlines questions to guide future study of these topics.     

The business of writing: literature as a commodity in Claudia Piñeiro’s Betibú

This article presents considerations about the status of literature as a commodity and writers as professionals in the twenty-first century. These considerations are based on an analysis of Argentine writer Claudia Piñeiro’s Betibú (2011), which follows the story of an Argentine crime novel writer who becomes a ghostwriter after her latest novel receives harsh reviews for being considered commercial rather than literary. I argue that the novel in question points out misconceptions about the influence of the book industry on the aesthetic quality of literary writing, highlighting the need for literary criticism to look into everyday relations between readers, authors, and editors.     

Lena Finkle’s magic arc: hybrid influences in the Russian American graphic novel

ABSTRACT

The article examines Anya Ulinich’s graphic narrative Lena Finkle’s Magic Barrel and the novel’s use of visual culture from both the author’s Russian and US American backgrounds. The article interrogates the use of history and timelines, Russian art history and Russian art education in Ulinich’s text. It also analyzes other literary constructs that influenced Ulinich’s novel: US American comics/graphic novels and their use of stereotype, and novels by Russian-speaking Jewish American writers, with their thematized Jewishness.

传统财政分权理论认为,地方政府应该承担配置职能,中央政府执行稳定经济和分配职能。这一理论对于转型经济体的适用性是值得商榷的。从俄罗斯制度转型、财政调整、财政分权三者互动的研究中发现,地方政府在宏观稳定和分配方面职能加强。地方政府收入支出不匹配,财政赤字增加,既为地方政府非法获取财政收入创造了激励,又恶化了财政状况,扭曲公共品及服务的配置效率,造成区域间财政不平衡和福利差异,国家宏观经济的不稳定,阻碍了私有化的进程。进一步的改革方向应是审视财政分权管理,建立清晰、透明的预算联邦体系,这依赖于结构调整和经济增长方式转变、政府质量和政府效率的提高。     

俄汉语祈使范畴对比研究

祈使是俄汉语共同使用的语法范畴。俄汉语祈使范畴的语义基本相同,但语用功能相差较大。汉语是分析语,俄语属于综合语,富于形态变化;汉语动词无体的区别,俄语动词则分为完成体动词、未完成体动词和兼体动词。体是俄语动词的核心语法范畴,与态、时、式、人称等其他语法范畴相比,体处于特殊地位。在祈使句中动词体的不同,表达的意义并不相同。另外,动词祈使式的人称还受到亲疏关系、年龄、社会地位等因素的影响。

Non-tariff barrier on chicken imports into Russia: Impact on production,trade and prices

We analyze the Russian restriction on chicken imports as an example of a non-tariff barrier (NTB). Cointegration test results support the hypothesis that the NTB limited trade. We calibrate an equilibrium market model to cointegration results to assess the market impact. The tariff equivalent of the Russian chicken NTB is estimated to be 30 − 40% depending on the representation of consumer demand. Removing the NTB decreases domestic production by 4–5% and domestic price by 27%–34%, while imports increase by 326–423 thousand tons annually in 2015–2019.
