Measuring the impact of prices on inequality: With applications to Thailand and Korea

This paper develops a new methodology to compute social cost of living indices. These indices indicate whether or not price changes have a favourable (or unfavourable) impact on the welfare of the poor. The indices are derived on the basis of two alternative classes of social welfare functions. The methodology developed in the paper is applied to compute social cost of living indices for Thailand and Korea. The empirical results show that changes in prices have generally affected the poor more adversely than the non-poor.

从20世纪末始,在中国当代文坛掀起了一股新兴而强劲的浪潮———“80后”写作。“80后”写作从个体书写到集体亮相,呈现出以青春伤痕与狂妄为基点,低龄写作为卖点,媒体包装、商业炒作为支点的特点,冲击着文学、教育及社会生活各大领域,引起社会各界的普遍关注。对此,此文试图从“80后”文本的解读来阐释在多元语境下“80后”的写作背景、写作主题,从而为当下文学创作走出困境提供一种可能。     

The effects of different choices of order for autoregressive approximation on the Gaussian likelihood estimates for ARMA models

This paper investigates, by means of Monte Carlo simulation, the effects of different choices of order for autoregressive approximation on the fully efficient parameter estimates for autoregressive moving average models. Four order selection criteria, AIC, BIC, HQ and PKK, were compared and different model structures with varying sample sizes were used to contrast the performance of the criteria. Some asymptotic results which provide a useful guide for assessing the performance of these criteria are presented. The results of this comparison show that there are marked differences in the accuracy implied using these alternative criteria in small sample situations and that it is preferable to apply BIC criterion, which leads to greater precision of Gaussian likelihood estimates, in such cases. Implications of the findings of this study for the estimation of time series models are highlighted.

Discovering influential cases in linear regression with MINITAB: Peeking into multidimensions with a MINITAB macro

Various diagnostic statistics have been proposed to help identify cases that markedly affect, or influence, the features of a fitted linear regression model. Once influential cases are found, decisions can be made regarding their worth in the model building process. Since a subject data set may contain both singly influential cases and influential multiple case subsets, the capability to assess the joint influence of cases is needed for a complete analysis. The aim of this work is to briefly review Cook’s distance measure for multiple cases, an effective diagnostic for this purpose, and present a method using it to search for influential multiple case subsets. The method is applied in two example analyses by way of a MINITAB Statistical Software macro.
