Raising the Titanic: Rescuing Social Work Documentation from the Sea of Ethical Risk

Abstract

One of the most contentious issues in social work practice concerns what should be written about people who access social work services, how comprehensively, and in what format social work assessments, interventions, and outcomes should be documented. The present paper describes a structured approach linked to an action research project that was undertaken by hospital-based social workers to identify and minimise problems associated with documentation in the medical record. The Social Work Ethics Audit provided social work staff with a risk-management tool that highlighted documentation as a key area of ethical risk. Through a process of evaluating existing recording practices, social workers were able to meet the challenge of improving social work recording in medical records, returning it to its proper place as a vital component of clinical and ethical practice rather than an administrative task submerged beneath competing priorities. It was anticipated that the social work documentation proforma that resulted from the ethics audit process would have applicability in other health care settings.

Does the best practice of rational-style model-based policy analysis already include ethical considerations?,

This paper deals with ethics in the context of the real-world practice of operations research (OR), once an analyst has taken on the responsibility of carrying out a rational-style model-based policy study for a client. OR models are often used by policy analysts to assist decisionmakers in choosing a good course of action based on multiple (and competing) criteria from among a variety of alternatives under uncertain conditions as part of the policy analysis process. The paper suggests that if applied operations researchers (acting as rational-style model-based policy analysts, and not as policy analysts playing a different role or as policy advocates) use the scientific method and apply the generally accepted best practices of their profession, they will be acting in an ethical manner. It, therefore, describes the steps of a typical rational-style model-based policy analysis study, and specifies the tenets of good practice in each step. It also provides a list of questions and statements that the analyst and those evaluating an analyst's work (both internally and externally) can use to help make sure that the study adheres to the tenets of good practice for rational-style model-based policy analysis and remains within ethical bounds.

ETHICS, REGULATION AND THE NEW ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, PART I: ACCOUNTABILITY AND POWER

A generation ago, there was a major debate about the social and ethical implications of artificial intelligence (AI). Interest in that debate waned from the late 1980s. However, both patterns of public risk perception and new technological developments suggest that it is time to re-open that debate. The important issues about AI arise in connection with the prospect of robotic and digital agent systems taking socially significant decisions autonomously. Now that this is possible, the key concerns are now about which decisions should be and which should not be delegated to machines, issues of regulation in the broad sense covering everything from consumer information through codes of professional ethics for designers to statutory controls, issues of design responsibility and problems of liability.     

Professional parents’ loyalty to employer: The role of workplace social support

Professional mothers are more likely than professional fathers to leave workplaces—a phenomenon referred to as opting out. Previous research asserts that work–family challenges, including lack of access to supportive workplaces, are among the main reasons for this pattern. Despite revived interest in the study of opting out, little is known about factors shaping the loyalty to employer of those currently employed. Using data from the 2002 National Study of the Changing Workforce (N = 160 professional mothers; 114 professional fathers) we explore how three important forms of workplace social support – coworker support, supervisor support, and supportive workplace culture – are associated with professional mothers’ and fathers’ loyalty to their employees. Including fathers allows us to determine if gender dynamics are present in these patterns. The results suggest gendered patterns where supportive workplace culture relates to professional fathers’ employer loyalty and supervisor support relates to professional mothers’ employer loyalty.     

健康传播在抖音短视频平台中的问题和提升路径

针对抖音短视频在关于健康问题传播方面存在的问题,依据对抖音短视频平台上289个健康传播账号的相关统计数据,从传播主体类型、账号认证管理、健康传播内容、短视频制作形式等4个方面,系统观察分析了抖音的健康传播现状。研究认为,抖音短视频平台的健康传播现存在以下亟待解决的4个问题:一是非专业传播主体成为平台健康传播的主力军;二是健康传播主体的账号认证名称混乱;三是短视频传播的健康信息不科学危害受众认知;四是短视频制作形式单一。为确保抖音短视频平台健康传播良性发展,应由具有较高公信力的各级政府卫生健康委员会和医疗机构主动引领短视频平台的健康传播,抖音短视频平台应加强传播主体认证管理和内容审核把关,传播主体则要坚守“内容为王”并提升制作水平。

哈贝马斯话语伦理学的价值合理性与缺憾

哈贝马斯的话语伦理学是从其交往行为理论中引申出来的一种现代伦理范型,其研究范围严格限于实践理性的道德应用方面,因而体现了义务论、形式主义、认知主义、普遍主义的特征。其重大意义在于重申了理性价值,不但批判了道德怀疑主义、道德情境主义,而且有力地回应了后现代思潮所带来的道德虚无主义与道德相对主义。但话语伦理学并非完美无缺,体现了程序化、理想化的局限性。

家庭伦理在当下存在着失范现象,这在一定程度上影响了和谐家庭的生成,为此,通过理论上的反思来建构适合当代家庭生活的家庭伦理就成为了必然。当代家庭伦理在具体建构路径上,既要对传统家庭伦理进行时代发掘与转换,又要对西方家庭伦理优秀因素进行合理借鉴与吸收。
