阐释元小说的三重维度

当代西方元小说并非一味沉溺于语言嬉戏的艺术实验,而是文学批评、艺术实践和文化事件三个维度的动态综合。它首先是一个源自当代西方文学理论的批评建构,其中所体现的文本自反意识,与当代西方人文领域的反人本和反本质思潮具有同构性。与此同时,作为一种艺术实践,它又逃逸于刻板的理论归纳之外;它将内存于文学的悖论前景化,在艺术的自律和他律之间虚构了一个极具张力的诠释空间。然而,当艺术实践进入历史文化的辩证过程,以当代西方元小说为缩影的先锋意识开始与资本主义大众文化工业产生暧昧的互动,其原本蕴含的意识形态颠覆性则变得悬而未决。惟有对当代西方元小说进行辩证的多维度阐释,才能规避当下相关研究对其形式实验性的过度渲染。     

One-sided range test for testing against an ordered alternative under heteroscedasticity

In a one-way fixed effects analysis of variance model, when normal variances are unknown and possibly unequal, a one-sided range test for testing the null hypothesis H ₀ : μ ₁ = … = μ_k against an ordered alternative H_a : μ ₁ ≤ … ≤ μ_k by a single-stage and a two-stage procedure, respectively, is proposed. The critical values under H ₀ and the power under a specific alternative are calculated. Relation between the one-stage and the two-stage test procedures is discussed. A numerical example to illustrate these procedures is given.     

Finite sample properties of an HPT estimator when each individual regression coefficient is estimated in a misspecified linear regression model

ABSTRACT

In this paper, assuming that there exist omitted variables in the specified model, we analytically derive the exact formula for the mean squared error (MSE) of a heterogeneous pre-test (HPT) estimator whose components are the ordinary least squares (OLS) and feasible ridge regression (FRR) estimators. Since we cannot examine the MSE performance analytically, we execute numerical evaluations to investigate small sample properties of the HPT estimator, and compare the MSE performance of the HPT estimator with those of the FRR estimator and the usual OLS estimator. Our numerical results show that (1) the HPT estimator is more efficient when the model misspecification is severe; (2) the HPT estimator with the optimal critical value obtained under the correctly specified model can be safely used even when there exist omitted variables in the specified model.

Further Investigation of the Uncertain Unit Root in GNP

A more powerful version of the augmented Dickey–Fuller test and a test that has trend stationarity as the null are applied to U.S. gross national product. Simulated critical values generated from plausible trend- and difference-stationary models are used to minimize possible finite-sample biases. The discriminatory power of the two tests is evaluated using alternative-specific rejection frequencies. For postwar quarterly data, these two tests do not provide a definite conclusion. When analyzing annual data over the 1869–1986 period, however, the unit-root null is rejected, but the trend-stationary null is not.

Why can't we get what we want? Inequality and the early discursive practice of the sixth Labour government

ABSTRACT

Focus groups convened in New Zealand in 2014 confirmed a major finding of previous research: that while most people are concerned about existing levels of economic inequality, there is considerable uncertainty over whether and how a more equal distribution might be achieved. In asking why participants acquiesced to views that they did not like, the article suggests that they lacked a language in which to imagine or articulate their preferred alternative, partly because structural critiques of the status quo have become increasingly marginal within the wider public sphere. This observation sets the scene for an analysis of the discursive practice of Jacinda Ardern and the Labour Party during the 2017 election campaign and in the November 2017 Speech from the Throne. The article asks whether this practice represents a departure from – and a challenge to – the discursive dominance of ‘capitalist realism’. It finds signs of significant change relative to previous governments, particularly in the explicit articulation of values. At the same time, significant moments of ambivalence remain, especially on the question of how the new Government’s social and environmental objectives might be achieved.
