Unexpected but authentic use of an ethnically–marked dialect

Recent work on language crossing in the U.S. has examined the temporary appropriation of African American Vernacular English by white youth in an effort to participate in the current popularity and prestige of hip–hop culture, or in order to highlight racial boundaries. While such verbal behavior probably encompasses most white use of AAVE, it is not the only way in which whites (or other non–blacks) can use the variety. This paper presents a case study of the language of a 23 year old white female who makes consistent use of many distinctive linguistic features associated with AAVE. I argue that the interaction of ideologies of race, class, localness and language allow her to be considered an ingroup member despite her biographical race. This suggests that there is a tension between academic linguistic theory and actual speaker practice in assigning authenticity to individuals, and I conclude that language ideologies and other forms of qualitative evidence should be taken into account by sociolinguists looking at the link between language and race.     

How to do or not do things with words: The case of Koreans in Japan

In this article, I explore the ways in which ethnic identity is expressed by following the formulaic socio-linguistic norm, the very method of which defies the authenticity of identity itself, thereby asserting the identity's multi-facetedness as sustained in performative linguistic practice. I look at multi-sited socio-linguistic interactions among Koreans in Japan, who claim their primary identity to be that of North Korea's overseas citizens even though none of them have North Korean passport or nationality. Their identity, in other words, is based on ideological commitment, which is in reality supported by their ongoing linguistic practice. A close look at their socio-linguistic life reveals their ethnicity's dual or multiple ontology, which challenges among other things the currently dominant assertion of Japanese self in the western academic discourse.

语法教学体系跟科学体系有关系、有区别。根据今古专书注释考据中的语法分析，古代汉语教学语法体系宜有旬读与层次分析、语义关系分析、语词搭配分析、旬式词序历史变化分析、语用和语境分析等内容。     

Linguistic differentiation and Mayan language revitalization in Guatemala1

This paper presents a quantitative study of syntactic change in the context of Mayan language revitalization in Guatemala. Quantitative analyses of grammatical variation and code‐switching patterns were used to examine the degree of Spanish influence in the speech of three generations of Sipakapense‐Spanish bilinguals. The younger generations show lower frequencies of code‐switching compared to the oldest generation. In terms of syntactic variation, younger speakers show patterns that suggest a resistance to influence from Spanish. The results suggest that younger speakers are hyperdifferentiating the two languages by avoiding traditional Sipakapense constructions that could be interpreted as resulting from Spanish influence. The analysis highlights the important role of language ideology in cases of language change due to contact and language shift.     

Entering a New Peer Group in Ethnically and Linguistically Diverse Childcare Classrooms

This short‐term longitudinal study examined changes over time in social competence with peers as a function of child and classroom characteristics. One hundred and seventy ethnically diverse low‐income children, all new to their peer groups, entered childcare classrooms with heterogeneous entry policies and ethnic/racial compositions. We observed them with their teachers and peers at entry and again six months later. Observers rated aggressive, anxious/withdrawn, and prosocial behavior with peers and observed complexity of peer play. Children who lacked peers with a shared ethnic heritage and children who spoke a different language at home than the language most often used in the classrooms appeared to be struggling with peer interaction six months after entry into the peer group. Children who had a peer who shared their ethnic heritage and entered the most ethnically diverse classrooms increased their complex peer play more than other children.

20世纪90年代女性诗歌的语言书写策略

女性诗歌经历了20世纪80年代的躯体写作后,90年代转向了语言写作。90年代以来,伴随着整个社会的进步和对诗歌认识的改变,女性诗人不仅以诗歌的姿态表述自己,而且以具有女性主体性的"人"的立场进入诗歌,聆听和感受世界,既不放弃性别立场,又不放弃艺术价值,使女性诗歌达到人文价值与诗性价值合一的高度。90年代女性诗歌的语言写作,使女诗人以独立的女性话语与充分女性化的写作策略,实现了女性世界的完全自立和性别表达,并形成自己独立的审美体系,从而实现了女性诗歌写作的"宁静的丰收"。女性诗歌从此走上包含性别但又超越性别的更为广阔的前景。

维语广告与维吾尔族风俗习惯存在碰撞和交融。一方面，维吾尔族风俗习惯对维语广告的表达具有潜移默化的作用，使之呈现出独特的审美意蕴；另一方面，维语广告对维吾尔族风俗习惯有着不容忽视的改变，展现并促进着它们由传统向现代转型。二者相辅相成，共同将维语广告的发展推向一个更成熟、更有效的境界。
