Beyond the dilemmas of multiculturalism: recognition through ‘relational reason’

Recent sociological research has shown that the ideology of multiculturalism, after having been adopted as official policy in many countries, has generated more negative than positive effects (fragmentation of society, separation of minorities, cultural relativism). This article discusses the possible alternatives to multiculturalism, asking whether the path of interculturality can be a solution or not. The idea of interculturality has the advantage of stressing the inter, namely what lies in between different cultures. But it does not yet possess a conceptual and effective means to understand and handle the problems of the public sphere. To go over the failures of multiculturalism and the fragilities of interculturality, a lay approach to the coexistence of cultures is required, which is able to give strength back to Reason, through a new semantics of inter-human diversity. The author suggests the development of ‘relational reason’, beyond the forms of rationality already known. To make human reason relational might be the best way to imagine a social order which is able to humanize the globalizing processes and the increasing migrations.

Enlightenment and Its Fortunes in China’s Modernization

Abstract

The central concept of Western Enlightenment is scientific reason. It catalyzed the development of modernity, but itself contains a series of paradoxes: between “ought” and “is,” between necessity and freedom, between universality and historicity, and so on. The impact of Enlightenment reason on China was negative in that it generated a superstitious belief in the omnipotence of scientific method and in Western experience and political principles. Consequently, Chinese liberals were unable to handle the relationship between modern Western culture and traditional local culture and the relationship between the ideals of Enlightenment modernity and the objective requirements of real-life politics. At the same time, they were unable to identify the rational and non-rational elements in Western modernity or to develop what was useful and discard what was not. The real value of the Enlightenment lies in its spirit of reflective criticism. It is, therefore, an unfinished business in terms of eliminating superstition and dogma.     

农民工社会流动的现实困境与对策分析

农民工合理有序的社会流动对转型期中国社会具有特殊意义。然而,目前农民工的社会流动绝大多数只是水平流动,缺乏跨越阶层边界的向上流动。因此可以说,当前的农民工社会流动已陷入困境。转型社会背景下的二元化制度及其惯性、农民工整体人力资本弱势以及社会资本缺乏是造成流动困境的主要原因。欲突破农民工社会流动困境,必须改革与创新制度、提升农民工人力资本、推动农民工组织化建设、规范政府职能,同时还应加强执行能力的建设、转变观念。     

高校和谐师生关系存在问题及原因

随着目前高校招生规模的进一步扩大,高校学生数量攀升较快,在加重高校教师负担的同时,也给师生关系的正确应对带来一定的难度。本文通过问卷调查,初步分析了目前高校师生关系中存在的问题,并对其根源做了详细的探讨,以求学界的方家同仁共同切磋。     

论黑格尔的理性物质主义与思辨辩证法(一)

人类经济活动对象的二重性,决定了"事理"与"伦理"的互动关系,也决定着现代市场经济活动中的"伦理"与"法理"的互动关系。由于中国传统文化"人情"伦理规范的历史特殊性,现代中国市场行为价值规范,又表现为"情理"与"法理"的互动关系;又由于其对现代市场行为规范具有侵蚀性和排除性的消极作用,因此,这就需要我们依据现代市场经济活动的内在要求,育发和提升出一种新型的"情理"与"法理"的互动关系,以便合理地调整和维护好中国市场经济活动的正常秩序。     

韩愈的道统思想及其对后世的影响

中华道统思想源远流长,但真正建立起“道统”论的,则是唐代韩愈。韩愈站在时代的高度,面对外来佛教文化及本土道教文化的挑战,以弘扬儒家圣人之道即儒家文化的基本精神为己任,正式提出了儒家道统思想。经韩愈倡道统、批佛老、兴儒学的努力,使儒学再度复兴,并在宋末以后占据了社会文化的主导地位。韩愈的道统思想,对后世产生了重大而深远的影响。
