On being unreasonable in modern society: are mental health problems special?

There are many grounds for arguing that people with a range of disabilities have more in common than they have differences. However, those grounds to date have not resulted in a unified social movement. This paper examines one possible reason for that lack of unity: the particular force of being unreasonable in modern society. However, being unreasonable is not limited to those with a psychiatric diagnosis, nor does a lack or loss of reason take a simple common form within that group: it is a highly nuanced and context-specific matter. This complexity is discussed in relation to a set of inter-related questions about legalism, morality and post-enlightenment concerns with order and rationality. The paper concludes with a discussion of scenarios available to new social movements concerned with disability.     

The Occupy Movement and the Politics of Vulnerability

The Occupy movement has generated a significant amount of scholarly literature, most of which has focused on the movement's tactics or goals, or sought to explain its emergence. Nevertheless, we lack an explanation for the movement's broad appeal and mass support. In this article we present original research on Occupy in New York City, Detroit, and Berlin, which demonstrates that the movement's heterogeneous participants coalesced around the concept of vulnerability. Vulnerability is an inability to adapt to shocks and stresses, and it inhibits social reproduction and prohibits social mobility. Rather than specifically discussing the wealth of elites per se, Occupy participants consistently expressed the feeling that the current political economic system safeguards elites and increases the vulnerability of everyone else. We argue that the Occupy movement has reworked the relationship among a range of political struggles that were hitherto disconnected (i.e. ‘old’ and ‘new’ social movements) and rendered them complementary through the politics of vulnerability.     

Ethical Issues in Coparent Counseling

Coparent counseling is a method of helping moderate- and high-conflict divorced or separated parents improve their shared caretaking of their children. Because it is a relatively new modality, its practitioners face ambiguity and uncertainty in their efforts to practice ethically. In the present article, information and recommendations are provided regarding confidentiality, separate meetings with parents, interactions with attorneys and the court, meetings with the children, insurance billing, competence, and informed consent.

以党的十六大提出“建设社会主义政治文明”为标志 ,江泽民的政治伦理思想逐步走向成熟。“以德治国”的行政理念 ,“三个代表”的价值标准 ,“永做人民公仆”的伦理德性等 ,构成了江泽民政治伦理思想的主要内容 ,并成为其伦理思想的一个重要组成部分。     

论事理、伦理与法理的互动关系——关于中国市场行为价值规范的研究

人类经济活动对象的二重性,决定了"事理"与"伦理"的互动关系,也决定着现代市场经济活动中的"伦理"与"法理"的互动关系。由于中国传统文化"人情"伦理规范的历史特殊性,现代中国市场行为价值规范,又表现为"情理"与"法理"的互动关系;又由于其对现代市场行为规范具有侵蚀性和排除性的消极作用,因此,这就需要我们依据现代市场经济活动的内在要求,育发和提升出一种新型的"情理"与"法理"的互动关系,以便合理地调整和维护好中国市场经济活动的正常秩序。     

The proximity filter: the effect of distance on media coverage of the Christchurch mosque attacks

ABSTRACT

The intense media coverage in New Zealand and Australia of the Christchurch mosque attacks exhibited significant disparity in editorial decision-making between the two countries. This research interrogates the different approaches taken in newsrooms and how these differences were manifested in broadcasts and publications. New Zealand media were focused largely on empathetic coverage of victims and resisted the alleged gunman's attempts to publicise his cause while their Australian counterparts showed no such reluctance and ran extended coverage of the alleged perpetrator, along with material ruled objectionable in New Zealand. It finds the editorial focus in each case exhibits the effect of proximity, identified in literature on empirical ethical decision-making as a factor in applied ethicality. The authors conclude that a proximity filter was used by New Zealand media who identified the victims as part of their own community, but the events of 15 March 2019 were seen as ‘foreign’ by Australian journalists who used perceived distance as justification for extremely graphic content.     

关注民间：传统伦理文化研究的新思路

在中国传统伦理文化中,不仅存在以正统教化伦理为代表的“大传统”,而且还存在以民间伦理为代表的“小传统”。在两者的共时关系中,民间伦理虽然在社会文化体系中始终处于边缘地位,并受正统教化伦理的影响与指导,但由于它拥有最广大的民众基础,并切实地影响着人们的衣食住行、社会生活,因此不仅没有被正统教化伦理完全同化,反而以其自身强大的亲和力和无所不在的渗透力,通过对正统教化伦理的异质言说,显示出边缘对主流的反向同化作用和自身的相对独立地位。因此,要想接近和描述中国传统伦理文化的“原型”,就绝不能忽视民间伦理的存在。由此也就决定了,对传统伦理文化的研究,不仅要重视传世经典的爬梳和整理,而且对来自民间的各种思想素材,尤需格外关注。     

Challenges and Dilemmas of Civil Society movements in India

Civil Society spaces provide citizens opportunities to frame their collective identities and interests through the formation of voluntary interest groups and organisations set to specific purposes. In the west, historically these interest groups have contributed to the development of political thought that assisted to forge the economic interests of emerging bourgeoisie. This paper situated in the context of India begins with a thematic perspective and reviews the challenges that emerge as a result of the demands that emerge within the civil society space. The paper considered three broad range organizations for this review such as the Narmada Bachao Andolan (Save the river Narmada Campaign); National Alliance for People's Movement (NAPM); and the Self‐Employed Women's Association (SEWA). The authors see civil society as a conciliating place—where individual interests appear to mingle with societal requirements while providing adequate representation to the marginalized groups and expression of concerns around economic and environmental rights.

最近一些著名的美德伦理学家试图对正确的行动提出种种美德伦理学所独有的解释。文章打算证明这些解释并不成功。如果它们能够回答岛民诘难 (根据这一诘难 ,评价行动要求注意行动者之外的外部世界的效果 ,然而美德伦理学只关心评价行动者的内在状态 ) ,它们依赖的是某些普遍接受的美德伦理学的理由 ,而这些理由本身又取决于没有任何解释的关于正确性的判断。因此这样的解释导致了循环论证的诘难。简言之 ,美德伦理学的这些避免岛民诘难的解释只是以请进循环论证的诘难为代价的。它们直觉上的合理性大致上只达到这样的程度 :它们失去了有别于其他理论的美德伦理学的特征     

抗争、民主与治理:全球治理下的抗争政治研究

随着20世纪60年代西方社会运动的兴起,西方国家的国内政治由此发展出有别于常规制度、正式政治的独特政治形态——抗争政治。诸多的理论认为,这一政治形态对其国内政治的民主和治理都具有积极的促进作用。本文通过对抗争政治历程的研究,指出:一方面,全球化及反全球化运动、全球风险社会都使得全球政治和治理发生大转型,由此引发全球社会运动,抗争从国内走向国际;而另一方面,抗争功能也具有局限性。同时认为,国内和国际层面上的抗争政治,关注全球抗争与民主、治理的关系,呈现出与常规政治不同的性质、特点和功能,具有重大的理论和实践价值。
