Apps-olutely Perfect! Apps to Support Common Core in the History/Social Studies Classroom

The inclusion of technology in the classroom is an increasingly important feature of effective instruction. The implementation of Common Core Standards in many states also requires teachers to consider new pedagogical strategies to support meaningful learning. This article explores the intersection between technology demands and curricular change by examining apps that can be used to support Common Core State Standards instruction in history/social studies. Specifically, the authors highlight several apps that they presented at a professional development workshop for six to twelve history/social studies teachers and discuss the teachers' feedback regarding the strengths and limitations of apps to support their instruction. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations for history/social studies teachers using apps in the classroom are provided.

An approximate dual-self model and paradoxes of choice under risk

We derive a simplified version of the model of Fudenberg and Levine, 2006, Fudenberg and Levine, 2011 and show how this approximate model is useful in explaining choice under risk. We show that in the simple case of three outcomes, the model can generate indifference curves that “fan out” in the Marschak–Machina triangle, and thus can explain the well-known Allais and common ratio paradoxes that models such as prospect theory and regret theory are designed to capture. At the same time, our model is consistent with modern macroeconomic theory and evidence and generates predictions across a much wider set of domains than these models.     

Robust tests for the common principal components model

When dealing with several populations, the common principal components (CPC) model assumes equal principal axes but different variances along them. In this paper, a robust log-likelihood ratio statistic allowing to test the null hypothesis of a CPC model versus no restrictions on the scatter matrices is introduced. The proposal plugs into the classical log-likelihood ratio statistic robust scatter estimators. Using the same idea, a robust log-likelihood ratio and a robust Wald-type statistic for testing proportionality against a CPC model are considered. Their asymptotic distributions under the null hypothesis and their partial influence functions are derived. A small simulation study allows to compare the behavior of the classical and robust tests, under normal and contaminated data.     

Merging data from multiple sources: pretest and shrinkage perspectives

In this article, we have developed asymptotic theory for the simultaneous estimation of the k means of arbitrary populations under the common mean hypothesis and further assuming that corresponding population variances are unknown and unequal. The unrestricted estimator, the Graybill-Deal-type restricted estimator, the preliminary test, and the Stein-type shrinkage estimators are suggested. A large sample test statistic is also proposed as a pretest for testing the common mean hypothesis. Under the sequence of local alternatives and squared error loss, we have compared the asymptotic properties of the estimators by means of asymptotic distributional quadratic bias and risk. Comprehensive Monte-Carlo simulation experiments were conducted to study the relative risk performance of the estimators with reference to the unrestricted estimator in finite samples. Two real-data examples are also furnished to illustrate the application of the suggested estimation strategies.     

晏阳初:平民教育从中国到世界的历程

晏阳初先生是我国,也是世界著名的平民教育家、社会改革家,是我国早期社会学中乡村建设学派的最重要的创始人之一。他的平教运动和乡村改造事业具有重要的历史意义,至今闪耀着进步思想的光辉。本文从晏阳初人生观的形成,其成功之道,以及反映晏阳初晚年平教业绩的国际乡村建设学院等几个侧面,对晏阳初及其事业进行了客观评述和简要分析,并对国外的一些评述进行了回应。     

本质与诠释——论禅宗对“本质”的解释进路

为了让人认识到对"自性"的发现就是存在的本质发现,禅宗用了种种说教方法,让人相信这个本质,以破除心灵的遮蔽.禅宗将直说、直显、机锋等说明方法结合起来,运用种种语言修辞形式,都在于开启自性或本质.其中"机锋"是解剖心灵症结的手术刀,"公案"是启人开悟的好教材,棒、喝、动作、形象等具体方法更以"别传"的形式打开了通向本质认识的方便门.从现代哲学的眼光看来,禅门的一切手段都在于消解主体的习惯性思维,消解语言的障碍,以期来到心灵自在状态而让"本质"自动呈现,在生存现实中直接实现真相观照.     

Behind the ethnic–civic distinction: Public attitudes towards immigrants’ political rights in the Netherlands

Public opinion research has sought to distinguish between ethnic and civic conceptions of citizenship and examined the differential associations of these conceptions with policy preferences in the realm of immigration. What has not been examined empirically is why exactly these conceptions are related to people’s preferences. In two survey studies conducted among national samples of native Dutch we tested the proposition that the endorsement of ethnic citizenship is related to lower acceptance of Muslim immigrant rights (Study 1) and their political participation (Study 2) because of a weaker normative sense of common national belonging and higher adherence to autochthony (primo-occupancy) beliefs. In contrast, the endorsement of civic citizenship was expected to be associated with higher acceptance of Muslim immigrant rights and their political participation because of a stronger sense of common belonging and lower belief in autochthony. The findings of the two studies are similar and in support of these expectations.     

欧盟共同农业政策改革与WTO多哈回合谈判

欧盟共同农业政策(CAP)是欧盟实施的第一项也是最重要的一项共同政策,40多年来,在内外压力下,它经历了多次调整和改革。2004年8月,世贸组织成员达成了多哈回合框架协议。在核心领域农业问题上,包括美国、欧盟和日本在内的发达成员承诺将最终取消出口补贴,大幅度削减国内支持,实质性改进市场准入条件。如何与WTO新的自由贸易协议相协调,欧盟共同农业政策面临着新的挑战。     

贯彻《通用规范汉字表》需要澄清误解——以朱大可《汉字革命和文化断裂》为例

教育部、国家语委《通用规范汉字表》是中国今后一个时期在“通用”领域使用汉字必须遵守的规范。贯彻该《字表》必须澄清前一时期文化界对简化字的种种误解。朱大可所持简化字是“字母共产主义化”、“毛体字”，造成“文化断裂”的观点，以及他对某些字形的解说，对推行规范汉字有阻力作用。建议文化名人了解语言文字知识和汉字改革历史。
